A great book once I got past the first few chapters. It's slow at first, so it took me months to get through the first few chapters. Once I passed that point I couldn't put the book down.

Swan Song is always compared to The Stand, and I think comes away from that comparison shining. The two books are very similar, but McCammon has excellent characters. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

Nauseating post-apocalyptic sludge, with the usual gratuitous sadistic gore. I got about halfway through before wondering why I was subjecting myself to such torture; the book then joined my graveyard of Impulse Buys at Airports.

McCammon's epic masterwork told through the eyes of nuclear war survivors. The plot is similar to King's The Stand, but is preferred by many due to the fact that McCammon "trims the fat" better than King... McCammon's characterizations are complete but never go overboard, something that King detractors will complain of endlessly. This novel can be beautiful and terrorizing, sometimes within the same chapter. I'd say this book is one of McCammon's shining hours, and in fact I think he's a better author than either King or Koontz.
