The stylist at another salon who had been cutting my short, curly hair for many years retired. I was so afraid of what someone new would do with it that I kept putting off finding another stylist. Finally, my hair had grown completely unmanageable and I asked a friend for a recommendation, and she suggested Robert. I went in without an appointment, just to meet him. He greeted me warmly, focusing on my hair. Yes, he said as he peered at my hair, I can do something really good with this. So I made an appointment for a few days later -- and he did! I like what he did better than I liked my old haircut!

I've been going to this salon regularly for about 5 years, and had several different stylists. All were great at first. I have medium length hair with a moderate amount of layering. It seems that once I achieve the most flattering haircut, no stylist is able to maintain it over time. They eventually end up doing something different when I don't ask them too. After about a year of consistency with Lily, I just got a really ugly bob from her that I didn't ask for. It seems like she cut the under layers shorter than the outer ones so the hair curls under at the bottom and makes me look like a cutie pie mushroom head. In addition, there aren't enough layers above that so it falls kind of flat on the top and poofy on the bottom, the most unflattering shape for my face possible.

A half dozen times, I've asked the receptionist if they could book me a "good" stylist for a cut or color, and I have been incredibly disappointed every time. I had an awful haircut by a woman (who has since left). In fact, the cut was so bad that even Robert acknowledged it when he tried to fix it (not successfully). Then I had highlights with some young guy who seemed like he had been hired the week before (and has also since left)--a disaster and also had to be fixed. Then another terrible color job. It seems to me that there is zero quality control at this salon, with lots of transient stylists who may or may not be any good. Probably some of them are, but you never know, and Robert doesn't seem to care much..

I wasn't going to reply, but coming from a service industry, I only thought it fair to respond and give feedback rather then to simply not return. Firstly, there were 2 Manhattan salons that I was considering when I moved here- yours and one other. I chose the other on impulse, which has been great to date. However, when I had to miss an appointment due to work, I came to your salon on said Sunday. I came in and asked to have a single color process (I usually get highlights, but was going on vacation and wanted to have an all over color). Here's what went wrong: > I asked for a color and was recommended another color that was similar to what was underneath my hair (previously covered by highlights as I had made a mistake some 6 months back). I said no and chose a true blond color from a chart > I was told that I would need to sit for 20-25 minutes (fine) for the color to take. 35-40 minutes later my hair was checked > Stylist (Deleted name as have sent email to salon with the na... Robert Stuart Salon is by far the best salon in NYC. Robert along with his employees are very attentive to your hair needs and work hard to deliver the best results. Everytime I walk out of the Robert Stuart Salon I am constantly getting compliments on my hair... believe me if you don't give this place a chance you will seriously be missing out!

I have been going here for 2 years now and have always had a great experience with Robert and the whole atmosphere. He discusses what you want and everything he's going to do beforehand and even options for future cuts. I always walk out loving my hair. On my budget, Robert's a splurge. But with hair and shoes, you don't mess around with bargains.

I also got an amazing cut a few weeks back by Vincent. He really listened to what I wanted (i was even somewhat vague) and gave me a cut that totally fits my personality and face. I have no idea how he does it but he's really great. Very sweet and chill. The whole salon seems very welcoming and aren't snippy or snooty like some other salons. I'm a busy student and despite not taking the best care of my hair at times, this cut has kept looking great. Definitely will go back.

I was in the city for a short time and really needed a haircut. I called Robert Stuart Salon and they fit me in with Vincent. From the second I walked in the door, I was made to feel comfortable and at home. Vincent gave me a thorough consult, and gave me such a great cut! He is innovative, concerned, VERY talented, and sweet as can be. I will certainly go back and will try to have him be my only stylist. I live in Florida, so this may be a trick, but he is wonderful. I really enjoyed my experience with him. I am a cosmetologist, and he is fabulous! I was in a bit of a hurry when I left, and didn't really get to say 'bye" to Vincent, but I really would like him to know how much I like my cut and his methods. It was a pleasure. The only bad thing about writing this review, is I'm afraid I won't be able to be "fit in" anymore! He's going to be too busy for me! Great job, and it was a pleasure going to this Salon. EVERYONE in the salon was friendly, warm and welcoming. Thanks again, ..... Read more

Anyone else think the mix of five star and one star reviews is a little odd? I don't have an explanation, but I can say the stylists here vary widely in skill level and experience. After my first stylist left I had a few disappointing cuts from people who are no longer there. I stuck with the place because of convenience and ended up with Lily and my hair has never looked better. She gives great cuts for men. I'm a guy in my twenties and like to look good without looking trendy. I have to look professional, but women have to like me too. Lily delivers. I agree that the owner is in love with his voice and the solicitous attitude everyone puts on is blatantly fake--if you're a man, all the pseudo-empathy will make you want to punnch through a wall--but it's worth it for the cut.

I arrived at my appointment and I was greeted with wide smiles. I thought, this is going to be an excellent experience! My stylist (I don't even remember his name) was so very impersonal, however! This is a major turnoff to me. He said he was "focused on the cut." So I could not wait to see my new fab. cut. Well, once he blew it out and I told him it still felt heavy in places, he did not cut it any further! Now I know the difference between a $120 cut and a $55 cut. It is definitely worth your money to spend money on a GREAT cut. Upon paying, a customer review flyer was shoved at me as soon as I handed them my cash and they sent me off with a lollipop and a paper asking me to write them a review. How about a 10% discount on my next visit to go along with that lollipop? I may of given them a second chance.... maybe. So, here's the lollipop review.

Lily did an awesome job on an updo for my hair. Everyone at the salon (correction - everyone who worked at the salon) was super friendly and really paid attention to their clients. Tons of people complimented me on my hairstyle after I had it done here. Would go back in a NY minute!

They don't just simply cut your hair. They listen to you, and combine that with their many years of experience to meet your exact needs at the highest level. And to top that, each staff member is not only professional, but extremely warm and gracious. I've tried a number of high-end salons in NYC, and Robert Stuart Salon has, by far, done the best job with my hair. It is, as always, a pleasure going there.

Was my first time at Robert stuart salon, got an appointment by the owner himself, which turned out to be the bigest mistake ever.one he was running 30min behind waiting in a salon that can barely fit 10 people had no where to sit.finnaly it was my turn, and I asked for a simple haircut.just 2inches of and very litle layers ended up with 4inches of with to many layers and short ones that u have no clue what to do with it.my head looks like a big mess.maybe if he did less weird talking and more listening then maybe he would understand what I wanted.never going back.

I feel horrible inside that I am writing this. The "stylist" was so nice to me and so was the manager and they even gave me a candy to write a positive review on yelp and citysearch. But unfortunately theres nothing positive about this place. The place at best is mediocre. I am new to UWS and after a brief encounter at other places in the neighborhood, I tried Robert Stuart salon hoping it would be as nice as the place looks from outside. The stylist can talk well, but cant style. Sorry, I have no choice but to move on.

The stylist destroyed my hair style and now I am waiting for my hair to grow back so that someone can fix it. I can get a better haircut for less than 40 bucks with tips in the neighborhood. This place may be good for women, but guys please avoit it. There used to be a great stylist called Vincent but I think he left...and Roberts excuse is that Vincent moved to Hawaii. Avoid this place at all cost. I dont get the fanfare I see here. PS> if anyone happens to know where Vincent works now, please email me at mbac32@gmail Thanks!

I had two great hairdressers, the second one I truly loved as she did an excellent job and gave great personal attention to her clients. Needless to say both were let go without warning. The salon's MO is to take the appointment with the preferred stylist (obviously not with Robert-see other reviews) without letting you know she is no longer there, only to be told as you walk in for the appointment. The first time it happened, I thought shame on them. The second time it happened... I never went back, and never will! As women, we know it's harder to find a great hairdresser than it is a husband. If anyone knows where Sandy went, please post the name of the salon.

My wife and I have relied on Robert Stuart to style our hair for 5 years. Robert restyled our cuts, improving them considerably, and my wife's color has been consistently attractive and realistic. The store is small and friendly; they stay pretty close to schedule without sparing the time to do a good job; and the price is fair and affordable. Highly recommended.

I recently had the Keratin complex straightening and I was treated very professionaly by Jake, he was taking very good care of every part of the process, my hair felt smooth and healthy. According to them and to a review I saw on a magazzine it costs $450 and they charge $350. It's been 2 months now and my hair still looks great.

I first made my appointment with Robert Stuart Salon when trying to find a stylist convenient to work and home. There were a couple of reasons I selected this particular salon. One, the reviews overall were very favorable. Most clients seemed to be happy with their experience. But also telling were the management's responses to unfavorable comments. They were professional and sincerely demonstrated an interest in fixing any problem or concerns expressed by an unhappy customer. This spoke a lot to the integrity of the establishment. I’ve gone to the salon several times now and do see a high focus on customer service. I’ve never had to wait for my appointment. Someone always greats me when I arrive. The only criticism that I have is the small area in the back that serves as changing room, coat closet, shampoo area and employee lounge. It gets a little overcrowded at times and can feel a little awkward sitting with the employees during their breaks. Overall I’ll continue to pa... Read more

I knew I found my place about 6 months ago the moment I sat down in the chair and I didn't have to explain anything. Despite being a first timer, the stylist knew exactly how long it had been since my last cut and even knew how I typically like my hair cut. I've become a regular since then and I'm always thrilled with the results. The staff is incredibly friendly (they actually get along with each other too) which makes for a relaxing experience and atmosphere. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and appreciated. I've been to a lot of places over the years in the city and this is my favorite. Highly recommended.

Since I moved in to Manhattan, I had a hard time deciding where to go for my hair. I have always paid between $175-200 for a good cut in the city because my hair is very important to me. However, I was sick of paying so much for a cut that really didnt turn heads. I found Robert Stuart Salon through an archive article in the NYTimes and decided to try a Salon that was known for the best value for price. I got a cut and style that was the better than any other Salon that I have ever been to. Diane the stylist consulted with me on facial features, volume in hair etc. to produce a style that really accentuated my features. I am 26 y/o and wanted something a little different. Not only did I get something that was in line with the latest celeb styles, I got an experience that surpasses anything else. Even the prep done by Lullieta included a scalp massage that was better than scalp massages provided by Bliss Spas. The style cut and blowdry was 65.00 for a sr. stylist. Which, if ... Read more

Every girl dreams of the perfect New York City haircut and Robert at the Robert Stuart Salon delivers on this flawlessly. He's an innovative hairstylist who always takes the time to truly understand his subject. He makes recommendations as to what haircuts and color would compliment your personality and look. He’s an artist by craft and can accommodate the edgy client or the more conservative traditionalist. Finding the right stylist in NYC at the right price is such a daunting task but after seeing Robert just once, I absolutely refuse to use anyone else. I cannot count how many compliments I have gotten since my cut with Robert. In the interest of full disclosure and at the risk of sounding vain, I have to admit I feel gorgeous and completely confident after visiting him. There are few stylists in NYC who can accomplish such a feat.

Not one to usually write a review, after visiting the Robert Stuart Salon on the UWS, I felt driven to do so. After having been kept waiting for 30 minutes, I asked Robert for 2-3 inches to be trimmed from my hair and ended up with 3 inches from one side and 5 from the other. When I went back for my hair to be fixed, Robert then took off 3 inches off the longer side, making it uneven on the other side. Eventually another stylist had to fix Robert's horrendous mistakes. I came out with my hair 6 inches shorter, and not the 2-3 as I originally wanted. Apparently Robert Stuart has been in the haircutting business for over 25 years. Whatever talent he may have had at one time, is well and truly gone.

My wife and I think Robert Stuart is by far the very best hair stylist either of us has ever seen. He takes time to get to know you and offers suggestions about hair styles that complement your personality, your profession, and your features. It?s a total package. But you don?t have to take that description. Consider this: my wife and I have an absolutely beautiful 16-month old daughter. Recently, we asked Robert to give our daughter her very first haircut. All she needed was a little bit trimmed to give her hair a bit of definition. We could have trimmed her hair ourselves. We could have asked someone in our family to do it. We could have gone to any salon in all of New York City. We asked Robert Stuart to do this for us. We trusted our daughter to him, and he was nothing short of fantastic. What higher endorsement can anyone offer than to ask someone to give your child her/his first haircut? That?s how good Robert Stuart ? and his entire team ? are.

Robert gives a great men's haircut. I say this as a 30 year old guy who was tired of the rough $15 cuts I used to get from old fashioned barber shops. I went to Robert 5 years ago to fix a haircut I got from one of those barbers and have been going ever since. Whether you want a conservative men's cut or something more edgy, Robert can do it.

the staff at robert stuart salon is very, very unhappy: the first two stylists i was given [neither of whom i liked very much] were fired. finally i found one i liked, and that one was just fired. the turnover at this salon is greater than any i've ever been to, and i'm not going back. i've spoken with two stylists who tell me that robert stuart himself is paranoid and accuses the staff of whispering about him in the back room. if i worked there i'd whisper about him: he's a nasty employer. i have found somewhere else to go. i would not recommend going to robert stuart: you can get your hair done for much less money somewhere else, where you can also depend on seeing your favorite stylist week after week. DON'T GO HERE.

I had one of the best experiences in the history of my hair at the Robert Stuart Salon. As an apprehensive custome, my fear was quickly alleviated by Robert's expertise. He considered the texture of my hair, facial structure, and style desire before giving recommendations, which turned into a great haircut. In addition, the atmosphere is much better than many ues salons; everyone is friendly and attentive, a welcome change from previous experiences. Free bangs trims and great customer service round up the perfect haircut. Great place!

This upper-west-side treasure has a well deserved longevity. I became a customer when I lived across the street and have continued to return despite moves to Washington Heights and Brooklyn. Why? The bottom line is a great hair cut. I am afflicted with the kind of curls that can transform into sage brush on a humid, August day and Robert has managed not only tame my wild head but, also to completely transform it on occassion. The staff is hospitable and friendly and amazingly talented as well. In a city where a good hair salon frequently involves being humiliated by staff with an attitude or the choice between paying rent or maintaing your hair, this salon has managed to stay a mom & pop shop without staying trapped in the past. It's worth the trip from any borrough.

I can't even begin to express my gratitude to Robert Stuart and what he did with my hair. I've lived in new york for many years now and finding the right stylist for my hair seemed near impossible until I came to the Robert Stuart Salon and met Robert. Unlike most hairdressers he spoke with me before my hair cut to ask and talk about what I was looking for and what I wanted and sure did he listen! While I am not one to usually compliment myself, I have to say that my hair looks absolutely beautiful and all the credit goes to Robert Stuart! Not only will I be back again and again, but all my friends will know about Robert and the Robert Stuart Salon as well. Thank you Robert, I couldn't have asked for anything better! I recently had my hair cut by Robert at Robert Stuart Salon. I was extremely disappointed. I wanted to cry as they were styling my hair. They could not get it to look like a glossy salon finished blowout should look; they did not take the time to work with my hair, it being a bit dry. After washing my hair and styling at home - I realized that my cut was uneven; it looks like I never got my hair cut :( I felt rushed - like they couldn't take the time to work with my hair; seemed as though he was not use to working with my hair texture. With his years of experience, I should have left his salon looking stunning. I've gotten a better cut and style at a small, very low profile salon. Two weeks after getting my hair with Robert, I am now searching to get my hair re-cut. I was very disappointed - as I was so excited at the opportunity to get my hair cut by Robert - after reading reviews on city search. Everything came out great, and I am so happy I decided to venture out of my safety zone. The salon has a great feel to it, and everyone from the moment i entered the door was very nice. I like most other people was very hesitant to try yet another salon. I've had my haircut in many cities in many different countries, and finally I am convinced there is a perfect salon out there. ........ and it's name is the Robert Stuart Salon. Not only did they welcome me as a walk in, But I didn't even wait long at all. I instantly fell in love with the warm neighborhood vibe, and friendly atmosphere that they have going on there. The conversations filled the room and was not only isolated between stylist and client, but it seemed as if from a scene in a movie, that everyone talked freely, and openly amongst each other as if we all were long time friends. Conversations varied from where's good to eat in the neighborhood, to thoughts on the long term effects of global warming. Robert is a not only a seasoned and amazingly talented stylist, but he is also a great listener, and worked with me through my lack of being able to describe what exactly I wanted to do with my ha... I usually tour cities and choose one place to evaluate the saloons, unfortunately, mislead by the rating of this site (which I am having my extreme doubts of its system now), for NYC, I believe I choose the wrong place. I had an appointment with Robert himself to exclude the bad reviews worry. However, after 30min wait, my hair cut was below average to say the least. However, for people seeking an ordinary cut this might not be too bad. I noticed that at least 90% of the customers are quite on the older side (they are either doing tinting T section or doing their hair while still all gray), which would probably sum about Robert's style, which he mentioned already on his website. However, for an experienced hairdresser, I thought he would be able to create something different if the client wanted that. My hair is long, and I wanted to keep the length, but I wanted to have a new look. He failed to create something with that, but I believe that limitations only describe the hairdres... Read more
