I myself went to Pensacola for a week in 2004, and it was an amazing experience. The trip out to Pensacola Beach is 10 minutes from the mainland and you also pass through the town of Gulf Breeze (which is lovely). Be warned: the white sand is very hot in the peak of daytime. There is also the constant threat of the gulls, who like bandits, swoop down and steal any food you have laying out. Oh and when I went, Jellyfish were bad and restricted our swimming, but that was probably some migration thing. I highly recommend Pensacola beach if you are looking for a fun getaway. Oh, there are also shops and good seafood restaurants too.

Living in Pensacola is another matter. Most of the schools are poor. There are quite a few teachers who probably shouldn't even be teaching.
Jobs are another poor thing in Pensacola. This city is behind on the times. It is difficult to get a good paying job. Unless you are coming to this city with a new job already in mind, don't come here for the work. Most wages are low unless you are in some kind of management position or do some sort of technical work.

These beaches (including Destin and Fort Walton Beach)are southern towns with beautiful beaches for the family. Highly recommended.

I would really caution others like me who burn easily - the white sand will speed things up and before you know it - you're toast. I was burned so bad there once I could barely open my eyes the next day.
