A general understanding of japanese folklore is necessary to fully grasp the themes in this movie. Everything in japanese folklore is represented in some spirit form. Spirited Away addresses this issue with much greater detail. This movie would probably not rank in my top 50 so I won't give it 5 stars but on other lists it is quite deserving. Japanese anime is rarely done better than this film. The one problem is the choice of voices. Bill Bob Thornton was a terrible choice as were several others. The characters are deep but only if you can grasp the plot which is not easy. Most americans would not understand the spirits as represented and are therefore missing key plot elements. Nature is also not represented as weak and in need of protection in this film as well. Nature is a brutal force not to be toyed with and the end of this movie exemplifies that idea perfectly. A marvelous film that I might place in my top 50 when I have reviewed more movies on this list.

Or in English, "Princess Mononoke". This film is a vivid depiction of mans struggle against nature. Refreshingly, man is not depicted as evil, rather, it is displayed that both sides (much like is often the case in the world) are capable of compassion (hence the leader of steeltown, played cooly by Minnie Driver, providing shelter for lepers whilst having a disdain for the forest dwellers) but they've simply been torn by prejudice. The animation is wonderfully intricate and the sound effects are quite incredible (believe me, the sound of an arrow cutting through the air is unreal). Director Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki's delivery service) has outdone himself here. Highly reccomended.

Why is this rated so low? Toy Story got rated higher than this! And this animation "Princess Monoke" is so much better than Toy Story! "Princess Monoke" requires intelligent movie goers who want a REAL story with an intricate, well developed plot!
