I think Nicole Kidman is a fantastic actress; intuitive and graceful in all her roles, she has repeated great performances in every film of late. 'The Hours' is no exception. She takes a complex character and makes it her own. There is no doubt in my mind she deserved to win but I do wonder about why an actress must "ugly" herself to qualify for an Oscar. This is a prime example, followed by Halle Berry in Monster's Ball and the rumors of Charlize Theron's possible win for Monster. Makes you wonder what the Academy board's requirements are.

Despite being fabulous, as always, in her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in the cinematic approach to Michael Cunningham's dark-minded novel, this was of course not the movie for which this in-a-league-of-her-own actress called Nicole Kidman, in my opinion the greatest actor regardless of sex ever to grace American cinematography (I dear argue so despite not having been able yet to see every motion picture in this vaste period of time, reflecting my strong confidence in this case), should have earned her first Oscar statuette. It was an obvious robbery staged by the mighty academy to divert the natural path of the award, now leading towards the palms of Halle Berry. However, my immediate feeling of frustration was not nourished till uncapable hights due to the historical surroundings which wrapped in the Oscar ceremony of March 2003; finally the hour of recognition for the world of African-American actors had arrived! I felt more euphoric the upcoming day than I did at any time during the week leading up to the ceremony, despite the knowledge that Nicole Kidman was going to win the Oscar for a leading role in the most spectacular musical of all time; "Moulin Rouge!". :) Regardless of Kidman's post Oscar career, this first lady of acting abilities will always be remembered for her outstanding interpretations in the two thrillers where the exposure of her great range of talent reached new climaxes, namely suspense films of good, old class, called "The Others" and "Eyes Wide Shut". My faith lies in the lap of this extraordinary lady and will lead me back to the cinema each and every time she'll once again figure on the schedule, untill the day when I loose my admiration for her, a day my subconscious tells me won't ever arrive.

Kidman's Oscar-winning role as troubled author Virginia Woolf got more attention for the fact that she was wearing a prothestic nose than for the actual performance. A pity, as her work in this multi-layered story is impeccable. Adapting Ms. Woolf's detailed mannerisms, Kidman is just superb and a deserved winner that year.
