A mostly accoustic "little ditty" about a guy and his best girl. This song was an instant rock/folk anthem, reflective of that carefree 80's attitude.

I love Mellencamp. I prefer him to Springsteen when it comes to listening to music about the American Spirit.

Not the greatest song, but still has CLASSIC 80's style and beat. One of the first modern music videos of the decade. Everyone about 30 or older remembers when this song first came out lol.
twansalem 07/10/2008
Another song that I find highly annoying. With some exceptions, while rating this list, for the most part I have two possible opinions about 80s music. It's either annoying yet somehow still slightly catchy, or it's just bad.

An homage to John "Cougar" Mellencamp's mid-western roots. "Jack & Diane" was released in 1982 (a pivatol year in american pop music as the studios realized "New Wave" wasn't just a trend, courtesy of the MTV phenomena) as part of his "American Fool" album. The song was a nearly instant hit, striking a societal chord with american listeners. Prior to "American Fool" John "Cougar" Mellencamp had enjoyed only minimal success as a musician (though his contributions as a song-writer were appreciable). The decade-long string of success following "American Fool" was impressive. "Jack and Diane" was widely played and, along with it's album-mates "Hurts So Good" and "Hand To Hold On To", reached high levels on the Billboard charts in the USA. sadly, many contemporary music-lovers know John Mellencamp solely for his "This Is Our Country" jingle in GMC/Cheverolet commercials from the post-millenial period. While catchy (and, sadly, superficial), these latter offerings lack the true grit and emotion of his earlier works. Potential listeners are encouraged to sample this artist's early works to understand the strength of his musical contribution to american pop-culture of that era and beyond.

Dull little radio song, it represents a songwriter reaching beyond his abilities to try and make pop that matters. John Mellancamp improved with each album and some of his laterday records are actually consisitantly good.
louiethe20th 07/25/2006
Next to Pink Houses, I liked this one really well.
kingguiness 07/25/2006
A great song! What are some of you talking about? Mellencamp is one of the best somgwriters of the era!
edt4 07/19/2006
Non-offensive bit of fluff that you'd probably forget about as soon as you heard it if they didn't play it relentlessly on "classics" radio. One of a slew of Springsteen imitators who came out in the late 70's/early 80's. He had one song that I actually halfway liked entitled, I think, "Thundering Hearts" but, of course, they never play that on the radio.
CanadaSucks 07/19/2006
Songs that tell the life story of trailer trash isn't exactly "Blowing in the Wind" to me. . .
MedgarEvers 07/19/2006
Sorry, I feel like I could go the rest of my life no problem without hearing this or any of his other songs. It's about this side of American life that just seems drab to me. Plus it gets way too much radio play.
oscargamblesfr o 07/02/2006
Springsteen for rustics. I've loathed his music from day one.
zuchinibut 10/27/2005
Great song that always seems to get people excited when they hear it. John Mellencamp's signature song.
stlsportsguy 11/05/2003
It does make sense, it's about coming of age, losing innocence, and so forth.
