As President, Benjamin Harrison pursued an active domestic agenda. He supported and signed the McKinley Tariff, which raised rates nearly 50%. The President also supported and implemented measures to regulate big business monopolies. The President also proposed and fought for two landmark Civil Rights laws that failed in the Congress, which still included members of "the old south". President Harrison also proposed a bill calling for the conservation of natural resources. |
