He's bringing PR up from the ashes of the political hell of previous administrations. We only need statehood to make ours the best state in the nation!

Great!

This guy has as much chance as Hillary Clinton of getting the Republican nomination. I have a better chance of winning than this guy. Sorry, but nobody knows you, and nobody wants to know you!

Money can buy a lot of things and this guy has increased his wealth greatly during these last years but he does not have more popularity in the Republican Party as of today (Nov 5, 2010) than Marco Rubio or Susana Martinez, both hispanics that have won resounding victories in Florida and New Mexico.Actually he is very impopular in Puerto Rico even with a great number of statehood supporters. After a resounding victory in 2008 elections he has fired more than 20,000 public workers, even when he said as he was running for governor that he was not going to fire any public employee. Many statehooders in Puerto Rico were expecting that he would convene a plebiscite inmediately between Statehood and Independence and he went to Congress to ask for a Congress sanctioned plebiscite, and the U.S. Congress did not pay any attention to him.

I do not know much about this guy, but I think we should let him do some more work in Puerto Rico first. If he can get this territory into statehood and of of free welfare, I will consider him more. His state pays no taxes and collects/spends millions of tax payer money from the US through untraceable corruption. Fix this Mr Fortuno, and you would be alright.

Apparently Puerto Rico's status as a US territory means that Governor Fortuno can't vote in national races (they have no official representation in the Congress, but they have a resident commissioners office in the Capitol speaking for the territory--which Fortuno headed up for a couple of years), but as a US citizen, he can run for the Presidency. Has gained a reputation for cutting government expenses through mass layoffs of public sector employees and slashing education spending. Strikes have been commonplace throughout his term, as he tries to privatize certain state functions. No doubt some Republicans, looking to distance themselves from the impression that they're anti-Hispanic, may look to court Fortuno for high office. The Presidency might not necessarily be an option, but he may appear as a darkhorse candidate for the Vice Presidency.

Who? He's governor of a puerto rico where every citizen is on welfare?

Noway; just another career politician with only self interest in mind

He is the governor of Puerto Rico, which of course is kind of a quasi- state. However, he has no shot against Harold Heard, who bears a remarkable resemblance to the private in Full Metal Jacket with the jelly donut.
Jester002 03/25/2010
I see him getting the Puerto Rican or the Hispanic vote in the US, but the rest remains to be seen. He does seem to walk a hard line when it comes to budgets though. In a televised speech on March 3, 2009, 60 days after having been sworn in, he announced his Fiscal and Economic Recovery Plan which included reducing the government's annual expenditures by more than $2 billion at the start of the next fiscal year in July 2009. A reduction of such magnitude would require permanently laying off over 30,000 government workers. Needless to say, there were mass protests considering that unemployment in PR sits at somewhere around 15% percent all ready.

Good candidate. He has three more years to spread the word. No one had heard of Sarah Palin until her nomination. Mentioning Gov Fortuno this early in the race is a very good sign.
twansalem 12/11/2009
I would think being born in Puerto Rico must qualify him as being born in the U.S., but I'm sure that would still be a hurdle he'd have to get over for some people. The biggest problem though is that no one knows who the hell he is. Until I saw someone else rate him, I'd never even heard of the guy. I'm not exactly a political person, but I keep up enough that I would think that in late 2009 I should have at least heard of anyone who would be running for president in 2012.
irishgit 12/11/2009
O.J. Simpson has a better chance of being the Republican nominee in 2012 than this guy.

"[He has] been mentioned as a long-shot potential nominee for President or Vice President in 2012 by reputable national analysts." Reputable national analysts? What are those? Do they live near the Easter Bunny?

He is the best candidate for the GOP.
Ebikii 11/26/2009
I couldn't think of a better Republican to help bring the party back up. Like it's been said, just the mere fact that his name is coming up in the mainland with long-shot posibilities for Presidential/Vice Pres candidature is a great thing. If there is more need for proof, everyone should keep a close eye to PR and see how things get better and better with him being governor.
ejusino 11/26/2009
Luis Fortuno would be an excellent candidate for the GOP. Young, Hispanic, and able to capture the liberal and independent vote. He has shown he is a conservative bringing government spending down, reducing the enormous size of the territory's government, and cutting down taxes. He has also begun to implement Public- Private Partnerships and is helping to bring Puerto Rico out of a recession.I know it might be a long shot, but him just being mentioned is in itself historical for Puerto Rico and an honor for us puertorican republicans :D
