This painting set records at the time it was sold at auction but he has far better paintings than this one.

I love all of Van Gogh's flower paintings.. for all those who dislike them or think they're boring, what you may not realize is that many of his paintings (like this one) are essentially 3 dimensional, with the paint layered so thick, it was almost meant to be touched and felt. The texture give the painting a lot more soul.

A rather mundane still life, yet well conceived, vibrantly colorful, and painted in a way that is in keeping with aesthetic concerns of van Gogh's time, albeit much more excessive than what is considered typical. Yet it is a work with charm and personality. Another example of a van Gogh painting well known to the general public (because it is so understandable and accessible) but far from his greatest work.

Normally, I'm a big fan of van Gogh's, but this painting does little for me. Maybe it's just too akin to fruit in the bowl or something, I don't know. van Gogh just doesn't make use of color in this one like he did in so many of his other paintings.
