I've made a group about 10 years ago and it now has about 1000 members. I don't bother running it now and have people who run it for me. They seem to like it, but for me it has lost much of its luster. This gets filed as great for some, ok for others.

Yahoo! Groups is the message board service that replaced Yahoo! Clubs. While Clubs was better than Groups (in my opinion), the latter remains an extremely popular online community. It's been some time since I used the service regularly, but when I was more active registered users had the option to receive all messages by email; however, in the more popular forums this feature quickly overwhelms one's inbox. There are literally thousands of individual forums dedicated to different subjects (e.g. politics, sports teams, cooking, music, etc), one can create their own groups, each group has a dedicated chat room and space to share files, photos and links. The most substantial flaw was (and I assume remains) that the posts are not accumulated in threads, but rather listed individually which makes it difficult to follow certain discussions and ignore others.

Each group has it's own website where messages are archived, there are places to create files, polls, tables and to upload pictures. Member names are listed and the group owner has the option to keep that private. Group owners can either make the group archives open to the public or accessible to members only. They can also decide rather new members who sign automatically get in or have to be approved. They can also moderate messages if need be. A member of Yahoo! Groups has the option of receiving messages to their email as they come, or in a digest email and they have the option of no email they can go to that groups website and read the messages there. One problem is reading old messages can be a hassle if you don't know exactly what it is you are looking... Read more
