I picked up a bag of Purina Puppy Chow for our four month old akita. There must have been a recall or something -- the puppy started having seizures, slobbering at the mouth, jerking, etc. Then I read the label -- I think the red food dye is what's causing her seizures. Purina should be sued!!!!!!!

Dont like purina I would never feed it not even to the barn kitties. To expensive considering it contains nothing but corn, glueten, by-products and menadione.

Yes,this is bad food.Too much sugar, unspecified animal fat,too much corn and too much by-product.But I really wish the dog food "experts" would stop exaggerating or distorting the definition of by-products and trying to scare people and then listing the usual and often overpriced super premium brands that they think everyone should be feeding their dog.Get real.Alot of pet owners dont have the budget for these "boutique" pet foods.

This food was horrible. I have a jack russel terrier mix and a black lab mix both puppies. they barely ate it and their poop was yellow and runny. on the up side i switched to benniful which is also by purina and for the past week they have been eating it like it was candy. thier poo hasnt gotten better yet but it's still early. no review on that till we get acustomed.

Horrible food, I don't understand how so many people fall for this garbage. I work at a pet food store where we only sell quality products and have tried countless times to explain to people why their animals are not thriving. They complain about cost instead of understanding that quality food requires less volume in feeding. WHY does everyone think this is good stuff just because their poor dogs eat it? The animal digest previously explained is sprayed on to entice your dog to eat it, otherwise no way in hell a dog would want it. Also for the person who thought their dog was growing geat on it "filling out more eaach day" should really research the HUGE importance of diet in large breeds. I can feel that dogs joints aching for him :(.

Although my puppy was wormed, he started to look emaciated while eating this brand, so I switched him over. Also, he was pooping more than he was eating. After 2 days on a different brand, he already looked better!

My puppy love Purina Puppy Chow and i know it has a few bad ingredients and they say commercial food is bad for dogs,But I see people give their dogs raw meat that can make them sick so why can't my puppy not eat Purina Puppy Chow. I am sticking with Purina because I don't want my puppy to get sick if I keep changing his diet because of what I'm reading online or whatever.I also mix others treats in their to make it more enjoyable!!! P.S I do not know if enjoyable is a word and I think it is!!!!!!! HA HA HA HA!!!!!

My dog loves it, like its heroin. But the ingredients suck, and her feces are yellowish. Needs more meat. By the way, the people on this site need to see their vet, you need to ween a dog off of their current diet, anytime you automatically switch foods, they probably will get diarrhea, learn to take care of these animals.

I'm feeding my puppy Purina Puppy Chow & I know that the ingredients aren't the best, which is why I tried switching her to a higher quality food. But I noticed that when she was on Purina her stools were much firmer & better than they were when I switched her. Purina may not have the best ingredients but every dog is different & not every high quality food may be the best for YOUR dog.

I rescued my Min Pin puppy from the middle of a busy highway. I didn't know when the last time she had eaten was, so in a pinch I went to Safeway and bought the Purina Puppy Chow 4.4 lb bag for $4.99. To Purinas credit, it must taste OK because Roxy has truly relished every feeding for the last four days and the stools appear to be normal. The ingreadients speak for themselves though. Corn, Chicken bi-product meal? That's gross. I can't help but believe Purina is soley focused on their bottom line and invests too much in advertising and not enough in their ingredients. I just picked up a 4lb bag of Exclusive brand puppy formula for literally a dollar more. Ingredient #1 Chicken, #2 Chicken meal and then barley. No corn on the list. I happen to care more for my puppy than I do for Purinas shareholders. They can F- off. I'll continue to feed my puppy much better food for nearly the same money. As for the remainder of the Puppy Chow, over 4lbs. Well, I'll put that out and see if the neigh... Read more

Puppy Chow is, by far, the best feed I've used for my growing pups! For a short while this summer I switched three of my "keeper" pups off Puppy Chow and onto Wellness Just for Puppy ... Many of my buyers had been using Wellness, so I decided to give it a try. And for a few weeks, it was ok. Despite being triple the price, the results we got from Wellness were almost identical to Puppy Chow - save for one problem. Two of the pups were getting on/off bouts of colitis from their new food! They'd have firm stools for several days, then would go softer for a day or so until they produced all out liquid diarrhea!!! Then would firm up again on it's own, or just with some plain yogurt. I also noticed excessive poop, not only with my pups, but with the adults whom I'd switched to Wellness CORE for the higher protein levels. While Wellness pup produced nice, sleek coats, the adult CORE produced dry, dull looking coats @ $50 per bag!So it's back to good ol' Dog Chow with some raw, red meats adde... Read more

this puppy food is terrible, i got an 8 week old puppy 2 days ago. the first day i gave it to him he wouldn't even eat it. then, today my boyfriend noticed there was a worm in his food bowl, he assumed it was coming from the food so he emptied the entire bag onto the porch only to find it was filled with nests along with the worms (some dead, some alive)i will NEVER buy another product from this company nor will i recommend it to ANYONE! btw, too bad i had to rate this product with atleast one star to submit this post because it doesnt even deserve that

Our Golden Retriever pup was eating this when we first got him and we kept him on it, only because that is what the breeder was feeding and we didn't want to upset his digestive system by changing his food right away. He did fine on the food. He didn't vomit or get diarrhea, but his stool seemed fairly loose and light colored. When we took him to the vet for some shots, they gave us a bag of ProPlan Large Breed Puppy formula to try and our pup seems to love it even more than the puppy chow. His stools are firmer and darker and he doesn't have to go as often. Puppy chow isn't necessarily a "bad food," but it's definitely not the best either. We are sticking to ProPlan.

I have a 14wk old Chihuahua and he has been throwing up A LOT lately and it scares me. He has also had diarrhea A LOT. He wakes me up in the middle of the night because he has to go to the bathroom. At first my husband and I thought it was his treats. So we stopped giving them to him. He got better for a couple days, and now it has started again and the only thing he has had is his PURINA PUPPY CHOW. Has anyone had a similar experience??

more nutrients are being absorbed? are you kidding? the first ingredient is CORN!!!! what happens when we eat corn? it gets pooped out looking the same way it did going it! so do we absorb any nutrients from corn? NOOO!! it's a FILLER!!! Argh..... any Purina Chow is HORRIBLE!!! Do your dog a favor and don't feed it! I work in the pet retail industry and I am soooo tired of explaining this to people! also, the person below who feeds puppy chow to their dog who supposedly worked at a pet store..... the WalMart pet dept does NOT count. anyone who worked for a REAL pet retailer would NOT feed purina chow. no one. period. even the idiots at petsmart and petco know that..... duh. grrrrrrr.... just look for a food that doesn't have corn in the first 3 ingredients (preferably not in there at all). and you want single source proteins as the first ingredient (like chicken, not poultry; lamb, not animal).

Honestly I was a dog food snob for MANY years, as I worked in the pet food industry. That was until I adopted a black lab puppy named Cola. Poor Cola had the WORST Diarhea (sorry for spelling) I had ever seen, and ALL attempts to change her food to a higher quality food failed horribly (and I know how to do it right) nothing could help her until I put her back on puppy chow. I do agree that ther eare foods out there with higher quality ingredients, but that does not make puppy/dog chow a "Bad" food. It is a complete balanced diet and my dog will live a fine life with it. I would have liked to see Cola on a higher quality food, but I also could not stand to see her suffering anymore. @ thimbs up for puppy chow

My pitbull loves the meatlike chunk build of the this brand. Stool is less in weight and size when compared to other brands. Assumption is that more nutrients are being absorbed.

You'll notice that this is essentially the same review that I put for Benful, because they are essentially the same food. Ok people, here is your lesson in dog food for the day... Puppy Chow, which is owned by Purina, which is, in turn owned by Neslte Co. produces billions of bags of dog food to be shipped to millions of grocery and pet stores all over the world. Now common sence dictates that if a company produces mass quantities of a product all over the world that the quality of said product would be found wanting. It then comes to no surprise that you will find that Puppy Chow is lacking in much nutrition and ingredients that are neccesary for our dogs to prospor and live LONG and HEALTHY lives. Now onto the main event, Puppy Chow, not only does this food contain an excess amount of cheep grains (corn) and by-products, but it also contains one of the most horendous ingredients known to the pet food industry. ANIMAL DIGEST. Digest is essentially tissue and other organs that are too ... Read more

This dog foods first 4 ingredients are all things you really wouldn't want in your dogs diet plus contains many more harmful, dangerous, & poor quality ingredients in its list.... do some research. I put my 7 month old pit bull on this and she developed horrible allergies & other sad side effect. Cheaper isn't always better.

Do you consider your dog as your best friend? If yes, please DO NOT feed your dog this "thing" (I cannot call it food). 1. Ground Yellow Corn -- Can your dog digest corns? Only 10~15%, the rest, you are picking the corn up everyday complaining why they poo so much!! 2. Chicken By-Product Meal -- Basically, this is something that you throw into the trash can yourself, the manufacturer just use something with no value, add a fancy name, and sell you back in a much higher price. Chicken head, Chicken feet, and Chicken intestine, together with all the waste, to make up the "Chicken-by-product meal". Sorry, I have pity on any dog that has to eat this without any choice. 3. Corn Gluten Meal -- Cheap source of vegetable protein, animal protein is better for dogs 4. Brewers rice, soybean meal.... Do dogs eat rice/soybean in the wild? It does not change even though dogs are living in a house with us now, they are still "DOGS" 5. Beef tallow -- Beef fat, I hope the... Read more

If you think this is decent food, please do your homework. First search for what is bad for a growing dog. Then find out what foods are out there for a growing pup, what the ingredients are & the reactions the foods get. Puppies rely on you to feed them whats best. This is not a good choice.

Please don't buy this food if you care about your dog. Corn corn and corn. Would you feed your kids pizza rolls for every meal when they're growing up?
