Fry's
3
I have been shopping @ fry's in DFW since opening day in 1997, and
have had a number of both good and bad experiences. As I build my own
systems, I mainly use fry's for their vast selection of components,
peripherals, etc, opposed to an 'out of the box' system bundle.
Customer Service: Knowing the store layout/organization of items can
really help you eliminate the incredulous sales people. If you don't
know what you're doing, you'd honestly be better off going to a store
like best buy, radio shack, or circuit city. Personally, I like the
hands off approach to sales that fry's offers. You are greeted upon
entry, and as long as you stay out of the appliances, cell phones, or
laptop computer areas -- you'll be free of any ravenous sales
associates, trying to hunt you down for a comission bounty. I agree
with some of the other reviews here, in that the checkout line is a bit
much, and could be improved with parallel lines similar to that in
walmart.
But, on the same note, a $8.00/hr employee won't have the same skill
set that a higher level engineer, software developer, etc, who is
college educated and paid considerably more, will have -- so expecting
that level of knowledge out of a sales associate is a bit much. I limit
my questions to "where is this" or "where can I find that." Don't ever
expect a fry's sales person to serve as a consultant, because that
isn't happening.
On selection and inventory: I agree with the ECS bundle complaints.
Stay away from these boards, processors, anything that comes from the
CAGE which is "OEM" per fry's or REFURBISHED. ONLY BUY FACTORY SEALED
ITEMS FROM FRY'S. Otherwise, you will be frustrated beyond your wildest
imagination.
Stick to factory sealed and you should be ok. Be wary of any floor
items, open box items, orange tags, items that have been returned, or
anything other than FACTORY sealed.
REBATES: I've received most of the rebates that I applied for, with
moderate interaction with the manufacturer ---- my recommendation here
is to COPY everything you submit and keep these submissions in a
folder, so if your claim does get lost, you can always resend. I've had
to do this once or twice.
Fry's Service Performance Contract: Avoid the fry's service counter at
all costs. If you do buy a 'big ticket' system from fry's, like a
$2,000 laptop or desktop, always get a service warranty through the
manufacturer. DO NOT BUY ANY SYSTEMS WHICH SAY FRY'S COMPUTER on them.
Mistakes: There are occasional mistakes in the news paper ads, so be
sure to check the ad (take with you on friday when you enter the store)
so you can verify the item you are buying is correct with the PLU#.
Conclusion: Fry's is an amazing store if you know what you're doing
hardware and software wise, build your own computers, and keep current
with emerging technology. My advice is to look at the strengths of the
store, which are it's vast selection of products, decent prices, and
high availability of merchandise. As long as you stay away from
non-factory sealed items, you will do just fine.
