Everyone's body is different so my experiences may not be the same as another's so keep that in mind. I was given this the first time after having four wisdom teeth surgically removed. First I was given Percoset but ran out of that before the bottom two incisions were healed. The Percoset worked very well but the oral surgeon didn't want to keep me on it too long so decided to put me on something that wasn't quite as strong so he gave me Vicodin. It was a horrid experience. It didn't do much for the pain at all and it made me queasy and caused really bad constipation that was downright painful. I stopped taking it even before I was completely healed because it made me feel so terrible. A couple years later I had my gallbladder removed and was given Vicodin again. I would have requested Percoset but had forgotten to mention it to the doctor before the surgery and my husband had already filled the prescription. I was hoping maybe this time it would be different. Nope. It did almost nothing for the pain which was much worse than I thought it would be from laproscopic surgery (the brochure the doctor gave me before the surgery said I'd be almost 100% in 3-5 days...it was more like two weeks). Plus it made me feel like I was going to throw up the whole time I was on it. Try having to get up and make it to the bathroom and try to vomit and then have dry heaves right after abdominal surgery! It was HORRIBLE. I stopped taking it after day 2 and just dealt with the pain or took an OTC Ibuprofen which actually worked slightly better. As I said, all people react to different drugs in different ways, but from my own experience I would recommend against Vicodin. It makes my stomach turn just to think about the stuff now.

Vicodin 10/660 after open gallbladder surgery. Couldn't do it laproscopically because of c-section scarring and my gallbladder was too swollen and inflamed to be removed through that method so that was abandoned and I was opened up. I swear, it felt like they scraped my entire inner cavity all the way thru to my back. To top it off, I was allergic to the animal protein in the sutures used deep inside which caused them to liquefy into infection and pus that had to move up through my incision and between my staples... I'm still trying to heal. It's been 3 weeks so far. I have to heal from the inside out so the incisions inside do not develop a hernia, etc. I think I am pretty much passed that stage or close to it. Taking it easy though.

Don't go there. You'll be sneaking an extra one day and suddenly selling your ass on the street to buy more, saying, "What happened"? the next. "Vik's" or "Vikings" are evil things to taken as instructed.

I do not like taking any kind of prescription drugs. I won't outrule anything. I do however prefer alternate medicine; but ofcourse sometimes you have to follow Doctor's orders. In this case I had (3) wisdom teeths remove in a day. It was brutal Vicodin was my prescription. Iwas a babling idiot - but my pain was quite minimal where I didn't even noticed it. Yea, to the babling idiots on vicodin!

Had it prescribed after I had my wisdom teeth removed. My choices were to have less pain and more nausea or more pain and less nausea. Not sure how people get addicted to them, I felt like hell.

I have used Vicodin on an off over the last 15 years and find that it works quite well. Addiction does not seem to be a problem. I usually get 30 pills @ 7.5 strength per Rx and this last me a year or so. I use it as a preventative med for migraine headaches. If I take one vicodin right away the headache never advances. If I wait too long then nothing helps and I am in for 16 -36 hours of pure hell.

Way over prescribed. There is a huge potential for addicition with this drug.

I've written about this drug elsewhere on this website, but, since I consider myself something of an "expert" on this particular topic, let me summarize my experiences from my own subjective viewpoint. It was prescribed for me in the late 80's for migraine headache. The first time I took it, I had no expectation that it would work. After a lifetime of migraine misery, I was jaded and skeptical. Ten minutes later, I was an enthusiastic convert to the wonders of Vicodin. I was migraine-free, curled up on my bed in a fetal position and feeling euphoric. Being pain-free, and having the added bonus of a doctor-sanctioned high, was wonderful. It's kind of pathetic to admit, but some of the best times I had were being whacked-out of my skull on this drug. The high was better than that of being drunk, and I always felt more in control. Hence, I would often take a "road-trip" while on this. Dangerous? For sure, but at the time I didn't think so. I came to rely on it more and more. If I had to face a tense situation, or boredom, or depression, it was always there to "save" me. In time, my doctor prescribed a stronger dosage and I was able to stay stoned for most of the day on one pill. In time, he wisely cut me off. Since then, I've used it on and off. Was I physically addicted? No; I didn't take it every day or every week. But I was, and am, emotionally addicted and that, to me, is a far more dangerous, insidious addiction than that of the physical. It's toxic to the liver, it's an opiate like heroin (milder, obviously, but still an opiate), it can upset your stomach, cause constipation, it did cause insomnia in me, and it can drastically affect your mood and behavior in an adverse way. Inevitably, you'll need stronger and stronger doses more often. Sooner or later, your doctor will cut you off, and what then? Doctor shopping? Ordering on-line from a Mexican pharmacy? Is that a road that anyone really wants to travel down? Is it efficacious as a short-term solution to pain? Sure. But it should never be relied upon as a long-term solution to anything.

Prescribed to me for chronic headaches due to a skull fracture. Although nothing truly relieves the pain (it is INTENSE), Vicodin brought my pain from around an 8 down to a 3, which is pretty remarkable. Percocet is better, way better, but Vicodin doesn't have the same amount or severity of side-effects. It's different for everyone, but I have a very high tolerance for narcotics and Vicodin still made me very talkative and energetic before I'd crash and feel sleepy.

Great for pain, Messes with your mind if you take it too long. Use caution if you are prone to being depressed or having lots of negative thoughts.
Enkidu 03/25/2004
For moderate to severe pain this stuff is magical. Some people don't like it because of its addictive potential. Don't take it all the time, and you won't get addicted: your choice. And if someone has terminal cancer and intractible pain, let them get addicted--if this stuff makes their suffering less it's fine with me.
ana_mia_girl 03/25/2004
Good drug, for short term pain relief. Gets a bad rap.

LMAO ! I think it is so crazy when people like wetsack complain about cancer patients getting "ADDICTED" to narcotic pain medicine...give me a break ! I think your concern should be whether the pain medicine is strong enough, not whether it is addictive. How would you like to go thru the pain caused by cancer? Oh that's right..you probably never had it..and I am positive the last thing on your mind as your dying of cancer is whether or not you are gonna get addicted, because sadly in most cases it doesn't matter. I would rather die painfree than to not take pain medicine cause I might get addicted to it. Grow up and quit reading so much propoganda and bad publicity aimed at Narcotic pain medications. And as for VICODIN in general..the drug is only a 3...as there are so many stronger, and much safer medications in the narcotic area available. I would highly recommend you ask your doctor for Percocet or Percodan before ever asking for Vicodin for your pains and woes. And if possible, if you can handle it, OTC drugs like Ibuprofen are normally better anyways for the pain.

I have been on Vicodin ES for more than 6 years due to auto accidents and other injuries. I haven't even come close to getting addicted to it. I do stop taking it every 30 days for at least a week just to make sure. I have no withdrawal symptoms, although the chronic pain in my back and neck does get worse. I do have a small but not serious problem with constipation from time to time, but usually lots of water takes care of that. About 8 8oz glasses of water a day is good for you anyway, so if you take any kind of narcotic, it would be a good idea to increase your intake of water and insoluable fiber, ceral etc.

Ask your doctor about potential rebound problems before he/she prescribes it. Make sure you're an educated consumer when dealing with such a strong drug.
StanUzbeck 08/25/2003
Man, these things are sweet. They go well with cider, although you have to be really careful about driving anywhere afterwards. Perfect for chilling out before a job interview or to stave off boredom at work. Also pretty good for pain. The only negative is that you get severely constipated, but that's what laxatives are for. Seriously, laxatives and vikes are the shizznit.

After having dental surgery, my doctor prescribed Vicodin for the pain since most pain killers don’t seem to work on me very well. This medication does a wonderful job on the pain, but is addictive so should be approached with caution. One should also make sure to take it with food. My self and others that have been put on this mediation for one thing or another; who have tried to take it on an empty stomach has suffered sever pains and I even will regurgitate it back up if I don’t eat first. So while it is a super pain reliever, please approach it with caution.

This stuff is great. I had my wisdom teeth taken out and I had the day off so I took some and had 2 beers to relax, I got so high that I went online and bought my wife a 75.00 cookbook and didn't know about it till she hit me with the book I ordered and I couldn't even remember it.
wetsack 06/12/2003
My father was addicted to Vicodin for over six years. My father had cancer, so he had an unlimited supply of the stuff. Maybe someday they make a successfull painkiller where the patient doesn't get addcted to the cure.
rcriddell 05/26/2003
Very strong. Some people complain of upset stomach. It relaxs me.
Gups11 05/15/2003
I have nerve damage and vicodin is the only pain killer that works. The only problem is that it is easy to like it to much. If it hurts your stomach or gives you nausea ask your doctor for phenegran, that fixes it every time
Aurielle 04/23/2003
It would be a five, except for the side effects. When I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at one time, I had a lot of horrible complications like dry socket, where the bone of my jaw was literally exposed. I had to use denture cream and syringes. . .it was not pretty. So Vicodin was kind of a lifesaver for me, since I had such intense pain. The only problem was the fact that it totally knocked me out. I would take one and be asleep only 15 minutes later, not waking up for 5 or 6 hours. One day I took one before work and blacked out, feeling very sick to my stomach and dizzy. I ended up spending the day in bed because everytime I stood up, I felt like I was either going to throw up or fall over. So, it's great for pain but not so great when you have things to do.
CastleBee 04/21/2003
I used this after major surgery and admit that it works very well as a pain reliever. But do not take it any longer than you have to. Not only can it be addictive but, like most strong pain killers, it slows down your system which can cause lead to hideous problems with your bowels. That may seem like something to giggle about, but it won't if you ever have to deal with it. When you hear the words, "use only as directed", do yourself a favor and pay close attention.

An excellent pain-killer. I injured my back at work some years ago and I was given Vicodin and let me tell you, it helped me a great deal.

Love the stuff, works for pain like my I-T band and other ligament problems that I had, that I was prescribed N-SAIDS for that didn't work.
