Several years ago, a housemate told me that Izzard was all the rage, so we popped in a tape of his stand-up routine and watched. While we had the best intentions, we found nothing he said even remotely funny. I'm surprised the guy is still around, almost a decade later. When I tell his fans I just don't get it, they tell me that it's just the sophisticated "British" sense of humor I'm not getting. Maybe. If the "British" sense of humor involves acting like a speed freak and spitting out random zany notions as quickly as you can, then I guess Izzard has it down.

EDDIE IZZARD IS THE FUNNIEST MAN ALIVE! I HAPPENED TO BE WATCHING BBC AMERICA AND CAUGHT DRESSED TO KILL! LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND WAS HOOKED ON HIM!SO I WENT AND ORDERED MORE OF HIS DVDS - LOVE THEM ALL! HE IS FANTASTIC!(AND STRANGLY ATTRACTIVE!) I'M HOOKED!

I originally heard him on a couple of CD's and had no idea about the cross-dressing transvestite stuff until I rented a DVD. Have to admit that his appearance was a little distracting at first, but it all fits in with his performance. But then again, cross-dressing has always been a staple in English comedy.

As an obsessive comedy aficionado, I honestly didn't believe it possible for anybody to challenge the holy trinity of contemporary comedy: Richard Pryor, George Carlin and John Cleese. And then I stumbled upon Eddie Izzard (how could I possibly have overlooked him for more than a decade???) . . . Well, the truth is that the man (yes, transvestite maybe, but man all the same; no man can strut onstage wearing ten inch needle heels and come off as butch as Clint Eastwood walking into a bar as Eddie Izzard does!) makes that trinity a a quadity by absolutely belonging. Not only is Mr, Izzard hilariously (and intelligently) funny, but mesmerizing to watch. This is more than comedy -- it's a riotous, psycho-sensual, ballet!

had the pleasure of catching the dressed to kill act on hbo. great stuff, very funny, looking forward to more material

I love this guy. He never fails to crack me up. He had me hooked with "Dress to Kill" and made me laugh even harder with "Circle". Gotta love the monkey sign-language bit. "Give me a banaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaana!"

How can you not laugh at: San Francisco fog, squirrels covered in makeup in the tree (did I leave the gas on?), the First Battalion Trasvestite Brigade (Airborne Wing), cheating at Scrabble, claiming countries with the cunning use of flags (who the **** are these guys?), Napoleon/Hitler and Risk, Cake or Death? Cake please, Would you like a cup of coffee?, Stone Henge (it's a lovely religion the druids have), the entire scene in French (le singe est sur le....), Star Wars (what is it Lieutenant Sebastian, Im arranging matches) and ON and ON and ON I could go. This man is pure genius for making history/culture accessible and hysterical while poking fun at all of us, himself included. Lighten up and enjoy Izzard for what he is: an Executive Transvestite with one hell of a sense of humor and wit. For those that have seen it, and like it, I think we can all agree he is among the funniest people to ever do stand-up (#1 in my book - and John Cleese agrees). I am definitely a better person for having seen his shows - on HBO and in person.

dumass, unfunny, idiot

Ok he is a transvestite and that can put people off but he is very funny. Not gay and he talks about that a lot but he does like the clothes and the makeup. I have seen one of the specials he did for HBO and it was great. He is also a very good actor and has been in a few movies.

Pat Carrolls more feminine long lost twin...but not as funny.
ryper 05/13/2005
A great standup who understands that some words are just funny whatever context they are in. His inventive routines don't appeal to all but who goves a monkeys what he wants to wear? If it bothers you listen with your eyes shut.
southparker9 04/11/2005
Crossdressing is a distration. Not very funny. History lessons should not be a part of stand-up material.
kompewter 06/29/2004
Eddie Izzard is really histerical. His Darth Vader jokes are really funny.

Love everything I've seen of Eddie Izzard. A great talent!

There is something seriously amiss with anyone who does not find Eddy Izzard hysterically funny. I just watched Dressed to Kill and my whole body hurt with the stress of laughing continuously for well over an hour. How do 62/64 reviews with a score of 5 wind up with an average of 3.78 ???!
shalozby 05/17/2004
Eddie Izzard is as funny as he is beautiful: more than any other creature on this planet!
hopsgirl74 04/02/2004
Funniest man alive, I swear! There's something about him that forces you to watch him, (if I turn the channel, I always wind up going back, even if I've seen it a hundred times) and then the things he says make you laugh till you cry. Painfully funny man. Love him to death.
norabell 03/03/2004
Eddie Izzard only the funest man on earth...and he looks damn good too
AliciaDL 12/14/2003
A comic for the intelligent...if you don't get him -you are not.... Eddie is the best ever! Cake or Death!
twxpls 10/29/2003
Very difficult to rate. There aren't many in his peer group, least main-stream comic out there, by design, he's the first to acknowledge it. Knows folks leave during the interval, not everyone "gets it". But there's nothing wrong with the millions of us who do, we're going to hang on for a ~~I hope~~very long ride. If you don't get it, doesn't mean he's bad, it just means...you don't get it.
fayreyes 09/09/2003
Funniest stand up comic currently touring. Possibly the funniest man alive.
dcpepp 06/18/2003
Really: the most imaginative, funny, and smart comedy ever. Eddie is my all time favorite!
Gups11 05/15/2003
I've has to copy his dress to kill standup for 4 of my friends. This guy is the type you had better not be taking a drink or eating when he says something, or you will look like your using your nose to shoot confetti. Seriously I had an almond joy and the freaking cocanut came out of my noes. In my opinion he is the funniest out there now.
Redoedo 04/27/2003
Anyone who does not find this guy funny has to be smoking something. His HBO special was absolutely hysterical- I really enjoyed his analysis on history, everyday life and politics, espescially his analysis on the pronunciation of the word "herb". He's easily the best comedian next to Robin Williams. Go see "Dressed to Kill" on HBO!
jjanget 04/12/2003
Surely one of the funniest comedians ever.
callmetootie 02/04/2003
Forced and unfunny comedian has original material to work with, but it's just not very funny. In fact, he made me feel uncomfortable watching him. Very crude.
addicted 10/26/2002
ain't that a shame??!!!
Timmy!! 10/25/2002
Odd how people often mention he is a transvestite like it matters or may offend somebody. Come on, haven't we all supposed to have got past that stage by now? The simple truth is this man is the funniest human being alive on the planet today. No other comedian can make me cry with laughter for nearly an entire 90 minute set. He was also very good in the West End production 'Lenny', and had me crying with laughter there too when he was given free reign in part of the play to do a stand up routine. If you can't laugh at this man's routines you must have a heart of stone. Sheer brilliance - comedy as a pure art form. Those people like his comedy - and they're shagging...
Teaseress 05/11/2002
One of the few men who can regularly wear make up without looking stupid. He's a comic genius and my sides absolutely split whenever I watch him. he does have this wonderful child like quality to him that makes him even more funny.
Andrew Gilmore 08/13/2001
Why the hell is this man getting ratings of 1 and 2? The people who give THOSE ratings to EDDIE IZZARD have no sense of humor! How could anyone not laugh their ass off at the crazy ideas he comes up with? He's one of those rare comedians who is just as funny the 4-billionth time as the first. His bizarre views of equally bizarre (but sometimes more ordinary) subjects, imaginative "dialogues" and occasional sharp political or historical commentary combine to make him the best stand-up comic since Robin Williams, and one of the most hilarious non-Python examples of that unique British comedy I have ever seen! "AAAAHHHH!! I'M COVERED IN BEEEEEES!!"
CastleBee 04/23/2001
He has one of the most original and funny standup routines I have ever seen. I literally laughed until my face hurt! His commentary on history, art, culture and just every day life is brilliant. If you you like off the wall stuff mixed with razor sharp wit, you owe it to yourself to catch his standup routine on HBO, tape or by whatever means you can find it.
