Beetlejuice

Love him or hate him, Burton is brilliant in his own wonderful eccentric way and his movies show this. So without further adu, I present to you my lookback on the 1988 classic Beetlejuice (which is spelled Betelgeuse sometimes after the star) Our protagonists are a newly deceased couple named Adam and Barbara Maitland, played by a young Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. While I normally find Alec Baldwin to be creepy especially seeing as in he got cast in bad guy type roles throughout the 90's and not to mention those Hulu adverts where he's an alien, he's actually very likable in this movie. Both he and Geena do rather well in their performances in this movie and they have a lot of fun. Adam and Barbara get involved in an accident and drown, only to come back as ghosts and to find out that some rather unwanted visitors are moving in. fun for the whole family to enjoy but light on funny.

Beetlejuice is one of those flicks that I think I've seen at least 50 times over the years and I never get tired of it. This is one of those film projects where practically every aspect of film making just came together to produce something that for my money is just about as close to perfect as you can get. It's funny and light while also being fairly dark and morbid. It has a wonderful mix of special effects, from practical and optical to animation (mostly stop motion), most of which haven't dated at all, and still look better than 98% of the CGI out there. It's perfectly cast, featuring some of my favorite performances from actors like Alec Baldwin, Gena Davis, and Catherine O'Hara, not to mention Michael Keaton's turn as the titular character (who has enough amazing scenes that he steals the film while only being in it about 20% of it.) Being a child of the 70"s / 80"s I am now collecting movies from that era. I forgot how funny Beetlejuice is. Great movie!

This is an ok buy. I was really hoping there would have been some interviews with Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, and Geena Davis. Deleted / Extended scenes have to be out there somewhere! ...but the picture and sound are great!

I can't comment on the controversy here regarding certain parts being cut out of this new release. All I can say is that this is a great movie, completely entertaining and genius on many levels. It's also something your whole family can enjoy generation after generation. If you've never seen this, or haven't seen it in a while, check it out. It will put a smile on your face.

Beetlejuice had some potential, but for some reason it was just kind of flat. I don't know, I guess it's just hard to properly combine comedy with a little bit of horror. I guess that's where it failed. Beetlejuice should have been just a little more on the scary side for it to be good.
