I have a 8 yr old 3lb toy chihuahua that I have been feeding the canned Authority adult varieties, chicken ground, chicken chunks, turkey ground, beef ground, beef chunks and lamb ground for about one year. My dog after eating Beef ground today was laying in her bed and was reacting like as if she was flinching when I approached her. She is not able to get up on her own. She had done this before once a few months ago but I thought it was maybe her teeth because I had read that her teeth could be poisoning her if one was bad. I really think it is the dog food now. I am not sure which one it was last time but it is Beef ground that she was not eating much of today. She was actually not eating right on the turkey ground yesterday as she ate only very little for some reason. She is a little finicky sometimes so I didn't think about it until today. After reading other people opinions I now believe it is the food. I lost a dachshund to the dog food poisoning recall years ago from Stator Bros... Read more

It may not have the top most quality ingredients but it is more cost effective and slightly better than other premium brands. The major plus, my three finicky cats will actually eat it and not throw up. We tried the adult indoor real chicken formula and gradually increased the amount weaning them off the old food that they didn't like. We are still on a blend but they are all tolerating the food very well. There is less corn in this food than other premiums.

Has anyone had trouble with Authority Premium beef and chicken training treats?  I gave them to my two small dogs to reward good behavior anf they BOTH threw them up on 2 different occasions.  I'm taking them back to Petsmart. I rate these treats a big zero.

I feed this to our Shichon puppy and have since he was 8 weeks old. We have NOT had excess poops in fact he poops just twice a day. And no gas at all. He is healthy and plenty of energy. Perhaps the change in stools is because people failed to slowly change the dog onto a new diet. We live 100 miles from a petsmart and I make the drive as needed to purchase this food and will continue to do so.

i recently had just gotten a corgi puppy who is on this, he had bright yellow runny poop. i asked her about it and she said he had always been doing that. i took him to the vet the next day worried. my vet had told me after tests that its because of the corn and cheap ingredients in this food. otherwise hes perfectly healthy. yes the 1st ingredient is chicken but the rest of the ingredients are not healthy. my one dog who is currently eating wellness wouldn't even go near it. im trying to switch my corgi puppy off this asap. i dont like how it lies to u on the bag, i doubt dogs have a healthy digestion(*bright yellow poop*) and healthy brain development

As a former (and disgruntled) PetSmart employee, I was very skeptical about all the PetSmart brands. I raised my big boy boxer on Nutro but he always had horrible gas! I tried several different foods from grocery brands up to premium brands and the only one that has stopped the gut wrenching gas is Authority. It takes a little something out of me to admit it but the large breed authority puppy food really seems to hit the spot. I now have two boxer men and they both seem to love the flavor. Before, I was having to mix in wet foods to tempt them to eat. They like the dry kibble which is better in the long run for longevity. Both myself and my husband are begrudgingly accepting of Authority. We've noticed no increase in lethargy or decrease in energy- in fact, their stools are finally firming up, they look forward to meal time, and we can breathe a little easier with fewer trumpeting sounds coming from the couch... I give you a very annoyed nod, Authority.

Authority is alright but it does contain corn and glueten and is rather low in protein for my comfort. Authority Harvest Baked is the only formula that is a mediocre food.

I have a German Shepherd that is almost a year old now. She was having a lot of problems with allergies and the vet suggested that I try different dog foods to try and find what exactly she was allergic to. I was feeding her Beneful and found that the first ingredient was corn. My goal was to find a food that did not contain corn for my first try. The Authority Lamb for puppies did not contain corn as an ingredient (some corn oil) and since I have switched her I have found a world of difference. She is just as crazy and hyper as ever and the she seems to really like the food, which is great since she is a very picky eater. If it is bad for her, I will definitely switch her... just have to find something else without corn that isn't $50 a bag! So far though, no problems.

I have been feeding my Great Dane and Shepard/Chow mix this food for a little over a month now. It came highly recomended by a petsmart employee. Over the past two weeks I have noticed my shepard/chow has very little energy. In the past week both of them vomit daily. There stools seem normal but after doing some research on the food I'm noticing a trend. I just threw out both 40lb bags and sent my husband to the store for their old brand of dog food.

3 stars 1 I gave my dog Authority Adult for the first time & after he ate this food he became very lethargic. He lied down and sleep immediately. When I called him he did not want to move out of bead. I am going to return this food and go back to BLUE which he has been eating for months with no problem. .

Just so everyone knows this brand has a history of misleading it's customers into thinking the ingredients are what they are not. I am a dane breeder. I have used the Authority for many years. I have always fed the Lamb and Rice to my adults, and the Large Breed Puppy to my puppies. I have always recommended this food to my puppy buyers as well. I changed adult food in June because the price kept going up and up, and it was becoming much too expensive to feed, added to the fact that the closest PetSmart is 25 miles away. Since I go through 120 lbs of food a week, I decided to look around for a different food. I found one which is very similar to the Authority, my dogs love it and all is well. I just got an e-mail from one of my puppy buyers. They informed me that not only did Authority change bags from 40 to 34, but they also changed the formula, and most likely the manufacturer of the food. She informed me that the formula is much lower quality than it was, and wanted to know what i recommended as an adult food. I will be changing the puppy food to the new brand as well. The old Authority I loved and ... Read more

I have had my two rottweilers, mastiff, and siberian husky on authority for about two weeks now and they are loving it. Everytime I feed them they eat it all. There has been no problems with it. A manager at petsmart recommended it to me, and I'm glad she did. I would recomend authority to anyone.

I started to switch my dog, a Boxer/Shepherd mix, from From to Authority, but she immediately starting having horrible diarrhea. I thought that it was just part of the transition, but a few days later it kept getting worse. Her stool was squirting out and we couldn't even clean it up. So, I tried to just feed her the From again and her stool began to return back to normal and the second day it was perfectly fine and she snapped out of the lethargic mood she had while on Authority.

Some of these posts are old so double check the current ingredients. The Authority I buy has Lamb, Lamb Meal and Brown rice as the top three, plus beef tallow, corn oil, canola oil and dried egg. No rendered fat. My Basset is still transitioning to it and hasn't. had a problem yet. I fed Him Maxximum from Walmart till they dropped it- must have been too good a deal! I may open a can of worms but don't really agree with the post about extruded dogfood. From my reading, extruding is done at very high pressure and that breaks down the grain in the food and frees up the carbohydrate portion for better digestibility. This helps make it digestible for better energy. Bassets have convoluted digestive systems and are prone to throwing up and lose stools. No problems yet! Jon

We have an 11 year old Lab who loves her treats. We purchased "hip&joint" and 'hair&coat" biscuits for her. She loves them....but after one day she was either vomiting or had diarrhea and very lethargic. At first we didn't connect the treats with this issue. The third time it happened(we're slow learners) we had to take her to the vet. She had blood in her stool and was put on meds. We are suspecting the 'hip&joint' biscuit but aren't willing to experiment to find out for sure! We threw both bags away!!!! BEWARE!!!! and aware and learn the first change in bowels.

So naturally when I got my puppy I put him on Authority Large Breed puppy and now to regular lamb formula and he has never had a problem with either. I would recommend it to anyone :-)

We just got this brand to try. I will update on how well our dogs (two 3-year old labs) take to it. People, go with a baked dog food over an extruded product. If it doesn't say baked, it is extruded. Look it up. Extruding food subjects it to temperatures over 1000 degrees!!!! This creates dangerous "side effects" to the food itself. High heat+food=bad!! You know, would you eat fried rice all day, every day (thanks Life4k9 for this illustration)? Whether or not the dog food is "organic" doesn't help much if it's an extruded product (which almost all of those brands are!). Would eating organic fried rice every day be much better than traditional fried rice? Now, would you rather eat organic fried rice or traditional baked rice? Think about it. So I will accept wheat and other things in the ingredient list, because the food is baked. Our dogs were on Avoderm Baked, which has wheat as the first ingredient, and this food was better for my labs ears than any other cooked food (o... Read more

Your dog food should be Complete and Balanced. Authority is not. Stick with premium foods for your animals. It makes a difference in their health, energy, feces, skin, hair and more. Plus, premium dog foods are cheaper when you consider all the vet bills to fix the problems the food does not address or creates, and it is more expensive to feed as directed. Ask your vet or your certified veterinary technican; they will tell you that premium dog foods are better for your pet and will save you money in the long run.

The first ingredient int he food is a named meat ingredient. however, this is followed by a number of grain and filler ingredients, giving us little confidence in the meat content of the food. There is a further meat ingredient, chicken, 5th on the ingredient list but is chicken inclusive of water content.

I used to feed authority to my own dogs and to foster dogs.  It was OK, until there were two bags that they both just refused to eat- and when they finally did nibble at it, they were lethargic for a couple of days.  the regular Authority ingredient list does have one poor ingredient on it- Animal Fat.  Animal Fat is considered the lowest quality fat that can be used for dog food and its not species specific.I used to work at petsMart and Authority Harvest Baked has a really great ingredients list, but I did have a few customers complain about inconsistant stools- I had this problem with one of my own dogs on a baked food from a differenet brand- so I say its really good, but if your dog's tummy is not what you would call made-of-steel, go really slowly if you try it.

I have just purchased this food for my 2 year old Great Dane and my 6 week old Dane. It is recommended by a Dane web-site. I have to say, they both are eating it right up. As far as the comment from the petsmart worker, most food they sell is full of beet which is not good for dogs. As a large breed owner, I have to be careful not to give them too much protein as excessive protein is harmful to them. It just makes the liver and kidneys work harder to get rid of the excess. I am hoping to extend the life of my babies by changing to all natural.

I recently adopted a Black Lab puppy, so we kind of experimented with different brands of canned food to see what he likes best, as he only got dry food at the animal shelter. Well, this puppy chose Authority over all the expensive brands, he gobbles it right up. The ingredients are acceptable, and so is the price. He's been on Authority for about 2 weeks now. So far so good!

I have a Lab mix that has allergy problems and is a picky eater, she has been on the Harvest Baked Lamb for a couple of years and her allergies seem to be better and she eats this without any problems. But; last week I went to PetSmart to buy a bag and the shelf was bare. An employee suggested the Nutro Lamb & Rice, I came home, researched it and went back to PetSmart and bought the Nutro. The ingredients in Nutro are better for our girls (2adult lab mixes, 1 puppy). We have a puppy that has been on Nutro Ultra since we got her because PetSmart did not have the Harvest Baked for puppies. So we are now weaning our adult girls off of the Authority.

I purchased Authority Liver treats, my dog a Jack Russell Terrier is very healthy and has no known trouble, I started giving him these treats on a small amount basis, usually 2 a night, he began developing this vomiting in the morning, I stopped giving it to him to find out what was causing this, so I stopped treats one at a time, then a week later re-introduced it into his normal treat time. the results were the same, he would vomit in the morning after eating this. no other treats or food induce these syptoms. I just wanted to pass this along to others as I don't want them to loose a pet, a friend!

Both my Doberman and my Shih Tzu are now on Authority Dog Food. We've been successful with the dogs no longer vomiting stomach bile. They were doing this on a frequent to daily basis; which may have been from a main ingredient of ground corn or by products. We had tried different brands over a couple of years span without success but are now very satisfied with this brand. At least now I know what ingredients to look for and which to avoid thanks to the advice of a friend and fellow dog lover.

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG AUTHORITY ADULT LITE - IT KILLED MY 4 YEAR OLD SCHNAUZER IN LESS THAN A WEEK. The only change in Charlie's diet was slowly changing him onto this food. Bloody diarrhea and vomiting started, ended up with 3 days in the vet hospital and yesterday he could not walk and I found him dead in his crate. I have two other dogs and they do not get any Authority food or treats. Beware!!

I'm being cautious with this comment. We've just introducted the "Harvest Baked" Authority to one of our girls and so far, so good. She's the "princess" - dog lovers everywhere will know what I mean. Will come back to comment further if it's a no-go. We have both the lamb and the chicken formulas on hand to see which she prefers and really, in looking at the ingredients, it appears to be an exceptionally decent product for what amounts to a store brand. There are no artificial colours, flavours, by-products and no white rice or corn. 'Bout time more manufacturer's paid attention to those details! Just to correct the information below: the correct phone number for Authority products is 1 800 585 5249 ... not the 5 at the end.

Going back to Flint River Ranch, my dogs have experienced digestive issues on the Harvest baked dry Senior Chicken food.  GSD=soft to loose stools.  Samoyed=same.  Border Collie=same.  All 3 are over 7 years old.  They also do not attack the food with the same vigor as they do with FRR.  Also, I see there is a large amount of tiny yellow flecks in the stool which I take to be some type of non-digestable filler, maybe corn?

This is the only food my male dog can handle. I have had him on Kirkland's Super Premium Lamb and Rice and a few others, mostly the foods I have given were too rich for his tummy causing major gas and soft stools and worse. Authority Lamb & Rice has no fillers, no by products and no unidentified meat sources. The ingredients are tops using New Zealand Lamb. There is both Lamb and Lamb Meal in the top ingredients. This food is way superior to Nutro, IAMS, Eukanuba...etc Just take a look at the label yourself. My 3 dogs would agree.... Authority Lamb and Rice is awesome. Most importantly it contains no glutens, which has been the cause of the recent recalls.

I have been feeding my miniture schnauzers Authority from day one. I have never had any problems or complaints. The cat eats Authority cat food. If you take a bag of Authority Lamb and Rice and compare it with any other brand, you will find that Authority is equal or better than most other brands. Actually, you can do this comparison with any other flavor of food. I was suprised to find that Authority Lamb and Rice is almost equal to Nutro Lamb and Rice. Authority is better than Iam's, Science Diet, and Eukenuba (sp). Check the ingredients. Check the nutritional analysis. There is all you need to know.

The first ingredient in the food is chicken inclusive of water content. Once this is removed, as it must be to make a dry food product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus very unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food, and it would be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. The main ingredients in the food are grains. These are wheat and barley. It is firmly believed that dog food should be based on meat rather than cereals. Wheat is believed to be the number one cause of allergies for dogs. Chicken meal is the first true meat ingredient in the food, but unfortunately does not occur until fourth on the ingredient list. There is a further meat meal ingredient (salmon) 7th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make a substantive contribution to the food. The inclusion of some amount of vegetable matter is appreciated. I would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than dried egg product in the food.... Read more

I researched and actually tried six different dog foods(Canned)before deciding to buy this one for my dogs. The one that I feed to my dogs is the Authority Lite, Savory Cuts in Gravy. Chicken and Rice Formula. It is fully guaranteed with a Money Back, 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. It provides 100% Nutrition for Adult Dogs without any Animal By-products. The first three ingredients in this food is Chicken Broth, Chicken and Chicken Livers. It has a good source of vitamins, minerals, Beet Pulp and has Canola Oil in it. I like it because I can add fresh vegetables to it, peas and fresh carrots that I dice up and cook with more rice and mix the canned food in with these other ingredients when done. I cover and let it sit on the stove covered until the food cools off and my Pomeranians' just love it. Authority Harvest Baked Adult Lamb Formula is excellent! Not sure about other kinds from Authority, maybe they do cause stomach problems as other reviewers have stated, this one hasn't thus far. It's the Tan color bag with Green on top. It also happened to be the ONLY dry dog food I could find at PetSmart that didn't have Chicken and Corn since my dog has tested positive for these as allergens. Compared to Iams Dry Food which always smelled sort of stale even when you first open the bag, this one smells like salmon. Furthermore, no by-products, no artificial colors and preservatives, contains Salmon Meal (with Omega-3), which makes my doggie foam at the mouth in anticipation every time I pour it into her bowl. Get their Oven Baked brand. For the price it's awesome. Much better than the original brand. I switched from Blue Buffalo because it was too expensive. The Authority Oven Baked formula has awesome ingredients and no fillers. The negative comments are probably regarding their basic blend which is kinda cheap. But the Oven Baked formula can compete with even the best dog foods out there. The best part? It's not expensive!

Just started my dog on the Adult Lamb formula because it was the ONLY dry food in the entire store that was both chicken- and rice-free. (Far from being a novel carb source, rice is now in nearly EVERY dog food on the market). Chicken and rice are now on my dog's list of suspected allergens so this is a test. I also liked that it has carnitine - carnitine is usually only in the lo-cal dog foods, unfortunately - but I do believe it helps my dog stay a little leaner. She doesn't seem thrilled about the taste, but she's eating it.
