I dislike Saruman very much because he betrayed Gandalf who trusted him. Gandalf went to him for council and Saruman betrays him just like that. Saruman and Grima both betrayed people so they are my least favorite villains. Saruman also cut down trees and ruined Isengard. He made pits and mines and cut down all the foliage just to make fuel to feed the fires. He needed so much wood he had to cut into Fangorn Forest. Who needs that much wood just to make Uruks, Orcs, armor, and weapons? That is crazy. Saruman just was corrupted by his need to have power. Shows you all things can be corrupted.

Whenever a wizard takes a bit of a beating, he changes his robes one shade lighter. Poor Saruman started off white. --Unless the many-colored description is the one you know, in which case you likely noticed that all characters not purely good died before the end of the book. All the evil guys died, plus every single 'grey area' figure in the books failed to make it to the end. The world should be chock full of good people only, right?

Betrayer.  All he did was hinder man from winning Middle Earth.  Terrible what he did to Isengard, that place was beautiful.

Among the top characters as far as complexity goes, always interesting and even quite funny at times. Complicated, gifted, powerful, conniving, wise yet foolish. The epitome of the tragic hero who falls so far from grace, and his debate at Orthanc with Gandalf is some of the most exciting, fascinating, and well-written dialogue in all of Tolkien's writings. It is to Tolkien's credit that when Saruman is killed in The Shire by his abused servant Wormtongue, we ( depending on your own viewpoints of course) might even feel a slight tinge of pity ourselves for this once noble and good wizard who has become utterly loathsome.

Of course you wanted him to die, he was a freaking bad guy. If they had Saruman help, then they would have had it way too easy. Besides, if it makes you mad he was such a jerk, take up with Tolkien.

my least favorite. This jerk of a wizard tried to kill Gandalf, then he creates an army of Orcs and others. I wanted this freak to die.

It is always hard for the bad guys to get their due, but Saruman provides a sympathetic character who fell from grace. As others have noted, Saruman's character could have been more fully developed. Tolkien apparently wanted to strike a balance between a complete mystery (eg Sauron) and more involved, yet less mysterious character. It would have been interesting to have Saruman introduced earlier and part of the fellowship to watch him as he slowly lost his inner battle with his pride and turned to the dark side.

Well, for one thing, he's a bad guy. Another thing, he sounds like Darth Vader and lastly, he looks like he's about to die! Enough said!

You know I really didn't like the way they portrayed Saruman in the movie. He came across as completely possessed by Sauron, like the Black Riders were, but in the book he was smarter and more complex; trying to trick both Sauron and the good guys to get the Ring for himself. Still, I couldn't bring myself to hate him. Tolkien had a knack for getting readers (well, me at least) to pity the villains rather than simply hate them. Gandalf made it clear that he was not always evil, and when the threat of Isengard was taken care of, Gandalf still believed there was one last drop of good in him, but Saruman would not humble himself to use that last drop because he was too proud. Thus I got a sense of regret over his lost potential, and simply pitied the bitter-old-beggar he became in the end.
