 | lmorovan (16) 04/02/2008 | There are times when the decision has to be made about which is the greater evil. Afgan people were prisoners with no rights under the Taliban regime. Eventually, they would have rebelled against the rulers and a civil war would have costed many more lives, especially civilian. Few people here seem to remember that the war of liberation of Afghanistan was fought by Afghans with the support of the U.S. Our problem in Afghanistan was the support of the Taliban regime of the terrorist camps and people. Something that we either dealt with them there or on the streets of our cities.

 | Mr Happy (0) 05/16/2004 | This is a troubling consequence of 9/11. A consequence that could have been minimized. If you're an American and you believe that you're more important than someone from Afghanistan or Iraq, I feel sorry for you.

 | abichara (63) 03/16/2004 | Of course the loss of civilian life disturbs me in any conflict. Poor people have faced continual warfare for the past 30 years. Problem is that Afghan society is so fragmented that it's very difficult to establish state control in many areas and it's very easy for terrorists to establish their bases there. Adding to the problem is the opium trade in the area. Naturally, civilian deaths are part of any conflict, but this doesn't really endear us to the local population, especially in light of the fact that most of them had nothing with bin Laden. It should be emphasized that we need to treat terrorism similar to a law enforcement problem. We can't start a massive war with every Muslim nation in the world and we can't afford to lose their goodwill either by killing innocent civilians.

 | spunky (0) 08/31/2003 | Bigbaby says "Bin Laden attacked us and killed our civilians. When a country attacks another, they are responsible for the actions when the other country defends itself. When Afghanistan attacked us, we had the right to defense."
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SNIFFING? When did Bin Laden become a country? The US attacked a country because an opponent (who they cannot yet prove responsible for 9/11) lived within its borders. By that logic, the UK should bomb the US, since most IRA funding comes from the US (Boston and Florida in particular). The Afghanistan attack was a brutal diversion to make your president look tough. Bin Laden is probably still alive, but hundreds of thousands of innocent Afghanis aren't.

 | Redoedo (41) 04/22/2003 | The loss of any life is tragic- American or not. Those Afghan civilians, just like the American civilians killed on 9/11, did nothing to bring on thier deaths. The Taliban just happened to set up camp in their country.

 | BIGBABY (11) 02/27/2003 | Its bad that civilins die, yes. But, its not the US's fault. Bin Laden attacked us and killed our civilians. When a country attacks another, they are responsible for the actions when the other country defends itself. When Afghanistan attacked us, we had the right to defense.

 | HomeMonkey (0) 12/27/2002 | The lost of civilian Afghan people is almost equel to the lost of those in the World Trade Center, if not greater. These inicent people were caught in the middle. These people are too weak too fight against the Taliban and do not support their views or Osama Bin Ladens views. They do not agree with the acts of the World Trade Center. Yet I hear alot of support for the innocent killing just cause they are in the same region as Osama Bin Laden.

 | littlep (0) 04/30/2002 | This is very very sad and troubling. Afghanistan has been in a terrible state for such a long time. Most of them did not even like or want the Taliban government, but it was all they knew. Now, they are running and fearing for their lives. I am a patriotic person, and the loss of lives on both sides has been catastrophic. Of course, I wish that we could just separate all of the people who had done wrong and only punish them. But sadly, this cannot be when there is chaos happening. My greatest hope is that we can repair feelings on both sides and bring about peace.

 | reeny (4) 02/17/2002 | This whole thing was just horrible. Thousands of lives lost on both sides of the Atlantic. Retaliation was inevitable and sadly, because of the evil actions of a few, many innocents have and are suffering in this country and in Afghanistan. One day I hope we can all live in peace and harmony, but until that happens I can only hope.

 | TheFreak (4) 12/08/2001 | It is positively horrifying to see the reaction of some specific Americans to the death of innocent Afghan bystanders to the "war". There are actually people who belive that since Osama bin Laden was in Afghanistan, the citizens are not real human beings and therefore their deaths should be completely igonored. What, if I may ask, happened to Earth being one world? It seems that we have now been divided in thirds. Whatever happened to us being "all God's people"? All human life is precious, and the heads of the nations have yet to realize this. They say they do, but if they really realized it they'd stop warring and slaughtering and conquering. Pacifists did have adream at one point, of one complete nation. Now look what Bush and the Taliban have done to our dream. Take care, everyone!

 | ellajedlicka21 (6) 12/07/2001 | I really feel for all the innocent lives that will be lost for causes beyond their comprehension. It is disheartening that these destitute people are being bombarded with bombing and they have absolutely no means of protection. That is the sadness in all wars; the main victims are women and children that can't voice their opinions about the war.

 | magellan (167) 12/06/2001 | These poor people... they have been victims of international politics for something like 20 years now? The Russians, Taliban, and Americans have inflicted terrible damage on this poor country - not the least of which is civilian casualties in wars that have nothing to do with them. Who knows if this country will ever be able to recover from the damage of the last two decades...
