Original 8/18/10 I can't rate this one too low, my brother is currently serving in the USAF and apparently done pretty well for himself. I can't rate it too high because they sent him to the Mid East twice. Update: They're sending him to Afghanistan now. Fuckers.

Our base (Scott AFB in IL) is one of the most boring places on earth...however the military has taken very good care of my husband and I. When he was deployeed to Iraq someone from his unit called to see how I was doing, they sent me a card from Iraq when my dad died, our housing was in very good condition, ect. I think it really depends on what career you chose as to how much you like the military reguardless of which branch you are in.

It's funny how many say "if you can't make it anywhere else... go Air Force." What they're not telling you is they didn't get in themselves. The Air Force refuses more people than any other branch because you have to be intelligent as well as physically fit to do it. The Air Force is picky, and because of that, we're the best. Aim High. -Member of the USAF

If you are going to attack please make sure you are attacking the correct military branch. SECOND would you prefer we bomb first world countries, say, starting with your neighborhood? Too much trash talking going on between the service branches. Each branch has their separate intended missions, and they perform their roles extremely well. The guys doing the ground fighting (Army, Marines)need to be more physically in shape for that assignment. The Air Force troops servicing ballistic missiles or avionic systems on B-1's and stealth fighters need to be more intellectual and analytically inclined. Someone earlier said that the air force was the most difficult service to get into with respect to test scores. This may be, but again - the mission of each service is different. I am an Army vet, and I can tell you that if the AF had not been there when we called in for air support, my unit would have been toasted. An Army ranger friend said his unit got pinned down behind enemy lines, even lost 2 operators. Who came to their rescue ? The Air Force PJ's. Some elite unit, some troops say the PJ's are on par with the Rangers and Seals. The PJ's parachuted in under ... Read more

The Air Force has always been the softest branch of the military and back in the 1990's and early 2000's, it was even softer. But now, we're actually having yearly PT tests that involve more than just getting on a bicycle with a heart monitor strapped to your chest for 10 minutes. In addition to that, they're putting us on 6 month and year long deployments to Iraq and Afgahnistan, and that's not in the Green Zone or Bagram AB, but one of the countless Forward Operating Bases the Army live on that get attacked at least a couple times a month. Back in the 1990's, Airmen whined and complained about deploying to Saudi Arabia for 3-4 months and the only protection they brought with them were chem suits. Some Airmen today are still lucky enough to deploy to Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, or Diego Garcia, which can hardly be called deployments. And our rank structure. In the Army, any troop that's doing at least a satisfactory job can easily make E6 in less than 10 years and E7 in less than 15. Yet in th... Read more

I'm Active Duty so let me get down to the point. It has its ups and downs. I'm not saying the ups outweigh the downs, because you will recieve a fair amount of both, but.. a lot of people find the balance worth the service / time... Retirement is nice, so is a guaranteed job, etc...Just join and find out what it is all about, they won't force you to do 20.

Has anyone else had this experience? My nephew signed up with the Air Force and just completed boot camp. He wants to learn jet engine repair. They sent him to an Army base instead  in Missouri and his first job is to learn to drive huge trucks, etc. This kid is quite intellegent, definately mechanically inclined and we were dumbfounded to hear this. He is not happy as he was expecting to be sent elsewhere to start mechanic training and to be at an Air Force base. He has learned from some that the Army needs recuits and since kids have been signing up with the other branches instead of choosing army, the army is taking those recruites. So where is the honesty and integrity when they downright lie to these kids when they sign up???? Unless he finds out soon that he will eventually get the training he chose in the first place, I may just have to pass this info along as a warning to other young men and women who may wish to join the military.

My father was in the Air Force, and speaking from that perspective,we got to live in different countries and alot of the United States.I can't say really say how it compares to any other bracnh of the armed forces. From a air force brat's point of view it was moving every 3 years, somtimes likeing the places you where being trasfered, sometimes not. but always finding great friends in each place and leaving them.and on that level for me was not so great, but all in all it was good,I just never wnt to move again in my life!

I'm serving in the Air Force Reserve right now, and I have to say that is one of the best experiences of my life. The camaderie is very strong and everyone I know in my unit is hard working and dedicated, with the exception of about two slackers. I don't know about the whole calling officers by their first name. In my entire career, I never addressed an officer by his or her first name. Every branch has their pros and cons. Regardless of whichever branch you choose, make sure it's the right one for you. In my case, I'm glad I made the decision to join the Air Force. It's one of the best decisions I ever made. Go blue!

I've been perhaps rough on these boys. Sure, they are slobs and they call each other by their first names, but the little buggers can put iron on target and I guess that's what really counts. Our uniforms still look better, though.

Everybody thinks they know what they're talking about. How many of you idiots that have commented on the Air Force, have ever been in the Air Force? Somebody told you something or you heard something on TV or from a friend who is in another branch. The people that talk this way are usually trying to make up for an inferiority complex, trust me. The AF actually has very strict physical requirements. It has not always been that way, but it certainly is now. On top of having to meet these physical requirements, they hold no weight on your promotions process. I cant tell you how many times I wished I could just do a bunch of push ups and sit ups to assist me in making the next rank. I've also read comments about the bases and dorms. I lived in a dorm for three years with no Air Conditioning and warm showers maybe twice a week. Let me also say that there was an adjacent Army base to my AF base. This army base was inactive with VERY few people actually stationed there about 1/10th of the amo... Read more

Although I'm not in any of the Military Branches nor have I ever been, I don't beleive most of what the negatives are saying against the Air Force. From my understanding the Air Force is the only branch qualified for air strikes, bomb runs, long range air-to-air combat, etc. while the Navy's Planes are only qualified for auxilarary combat for sea battles. Also in my opinion the only branch that could effectivly challenge any one of the other branches on it's own would have to be the Air Force. With all these facts I would say that the Air Force may seem to be the laziest branch but in modern combat they are also probably the most important other than the Army. The only real disadvantage the Air Force has is it can't hold land in a war thus the reason why the Army is important. But you have to keep in mind every branch serves a purpose and we would be seriously disadvanteged if we lost ANY of them.

The blue branch is an interesting family. Yet, I was unable to get into it. I talked with my recruiter there and was astonished to find that the USAF did not guarantee me any jobs I chose on my paper. Know what that means? Out of basic, I'm not going to get an Air Traffic Controller job or a good engineering job. The TI's will stick me into whatever job they need filled at the moment. I don't know about you, but that's not a sound piece of advice right there. The AF has high quality dorms and all that, but I want a secured job when I get to tech school. What do you think?

Pretty Important. Our newest branch of our military is crucial for taking out important targets with grim accuracy and little collateral. They probably receive the most trash talk out of all of them (mainly because they don't have it rough). I want to join and become a mechanic or possibly a fighter pilot.

The Air Force is at times joking referred to as Our country's paramilitary service by some other military members. I can't give them a Five because, although, they somehjow or other manage to do a good job when the chips are down, compared to the other services (or at least, to the Army and the Marines), they really do waste a lot of money on unneccessary frills and perks. Officers clubs are lavish, barracks are better than anything the Army could dream of, and bases are overbeautified. The USAF officers I have served with (I was in the Army) generally were not very good decision makers, were a bit eletist, and teended not to have a really firm grip on what it meant to be a soldier in terms of discipline or dedication to anything resembling hard or sustained work. Overall, they tended to be pseudo-intellectual - but that's just in my experience. Often, they are delusional, especially when reporting the results of attacks on targets. During WW II, they reported knocking out more t... Read more

The Air Force is the more humanistic branch. People are achnowledged as individuals rather than another cog. Family life is important and the Air Force devotes many resourses to the family as well as the member. The living conditions are better and the facilities nicer. Someone once said that it's the closest to being a civillian and still be in the military. This is probably correct, but make no mistake ...it is still military. True, they have thier slugs, but I've seen them in all branches. By in large they are sharp, hard working troops who are proud of thier country, and represent it well. The job training is also applicable to crossing over to the civilian sector. Large bonuses are often paid to those careers in high demand. As mentioned your duties center around your primary job, so not as much time is spent doing trivial duties witch I've heard to be extensive in the other services (I grew up as an Army brat). It also takes higher asvab scores to get in than the other ... Read more

I've been a dependent family member with both the Air Force and the Army. The Air Force treated us much better than the Army, as a whole. Nicer housing available, better programs for enlisted folks. Maybe the Air Force is/was a little pickier than the Army when personnel are allowed in? Just a guess.

I'm in the Navy stationed on an Air Force Base and these people are awful. If we need support from them on a weekend or holiday, they are almost impossible to get in to do a job that is mission essential to us. Each person in the Air Force has a specific job and will not help you if 'it is not their job.' A lot of them call their officers by their first name and they have very little discipline whatsoever. The Navy has the most planes, and we support the Marines. The Army fights and drive equipment and heavy vehicles. What the heck does the Air Force do? They spend all their money on barracks and housing, because they don't have ships or missles or tanks. There is absolutely no point to the Air Force except to waste tax payer's dollars. They need to let the Army take over as the only permanent shore force. The Air Force serves no true purpose.

Admittedly I am biased, having retired after 22 years of service. However, I would also rate the other services the same. Each service is different, and just like clothes, cars etc you have to choose the right one for you. I believe the Air Force is the less difficult of the services-but a bit more technical than the other services. And keep in mind, that while we may not be the fittest-we could be the ones that you cl for an airstrike berfore you get overrun. And , what can be so bad about a Service that has it's officers has the majority of front line fighters.

I kind of regret never having joined the Air Force. This is the military branch to be in. I flew so many successful 'mock' missions in my F-117 A Stealth Fighter (for my Atari ST computer game) that I advanced to Lt. Colonel within 37 missions. I was bad. My 'handle' was "Dilution King" because I had the adept ability and knack for leveling entire cities (hence, 'diluting' the landscape) in any of the 4 regions I flew in in conventional war situations. You never saw the likes of a Stealth fighter pilot as I, believe me. I was 'bad.' 'Bad' as in 'Michael-Jackson-bad.' 'Bad' in a 'good' way. I knew all the tactics and was extremely adept at handling the plane and maneuvering successfully to avoid doppler radar SAM sites as well as pulse radar in the more 3rd world regions. I was eventually killed but not before taking 8 missiles or so and having tallied some 25,000 or more civilian deaths (they were mostly Muslim bastards, no big deal) and a plethora of primary and secondary ta... Was in for 4 years - hard to recall all that I didn't like - mostly I just don't like the military! Most of the people in it deserve to be in the situations we put them in - many of the people are losers who can't adapt to the real world. If you're Southern, Republican, patriotic, and uncreative, you'll love it. It does get points for paying your way thru college and for being a safe place to serve, but the Arse Farce has the lowest Reserve GI Bill of the military.

An institution that enfranchises and essentially supports the sexual harassment and rape of female cadets at its service academy. This is also an institution that allows sexual harassment of women at those juvenile, drunken and totally unnecessary Tailhook Conventions. This is also a marginally competent lot that typically misses its military targets and rains death and destruction from above on civilian populations in third world countries. This is the branch of the service that is in most need of having a bone shoved up its collective butt so the dogs can drag it through the neighborhood.
