You know, at the time I thought the Monkees were so cool, and that this show depicting them as a bunch of fun-lovin' funsters, was the best. Yet, when I watch it now, it seems oh-so stupid.

Silly and fun show. All went well until the word got out that they weren't really a band. Their music was a studio creation and written by some fine writers of the time including Neal Diamond. When the boys decided to get real their own songs and performances sank the ship. Only Jones and Nesmith continued with their music. The show was hugely popular with the pre-teen girls though. Most of them treated The Monkees like the American Beatles. Excellent pop tunes in the first two seasons.

I wish the reruns were still on. It was nice to watch while unwinding after a long day of school. This is how i got hooked on the song "Goin Down". About a year ago i bought the Rhino best of CD.

good for what it was. a cheap american imitation serialization of a beatles movie.

Neither the Monkees (the fabricated group) nor "The Monkees" (the television show) were intended to be serious; nevertheless, the franchise actually put out a fun product and some happy go lucky music. In some ways the series was ahead of its time, with its musical interludes the forerunner of modern music videos and the characters speaking directly to the audience and people off-camera. Moreover, the songwriting talent was impeccable, with contributions from Neil Diamond, Carol King, and Gerry Goffin (among others). Though subjective, I always loved this series and remember fondly when MTV reran the series a good while back.

Not as good as the music.

I IDOLIZED this group as a kid. Loved their music; loved the show. I remember writing a letter full of youthful homage to them at the address listed on the back of one of the record albums my Dad had bought for me on his way home from work in NY. I never received a reply and my world was ruined; I had suffered my first big disappointment. I was beyond solace, at least until I bought my first Rolling Stones record at the Two-Guys store in Wayne and life, as they say, continued on...

I loved the show when I was a kid. I know it was dippy, but I liked it. They made me laugh. I also loved their music. I loved that they acted silly and goofy.

I was in 7th grade when I watched the original show at 7pm on Monday night. I didn't care what the show was about because I was nuts about Davy Jones. I had all their records and still to this day know all the lyrics by heart. The show was a hit because there were thousands of other girls just like me that had huge crushes on either Davy, Peter, Mickey or Mike.

I missed this the first time around and caught it on the re-runs that started in 1969. The Monkees was a Beatles type gang who got into scrapes and sang songs just like the Beatles did in Hard Days Night and Help. It was all good fun. I loved the Neil Diamond song, I'm a Believer performed by the Monkees. Another Monkees hit was Last Train from Clarksville.
nighthawk 03/30/2005
Show sucked but come on..they really had good songs.
irishgit 03/26/2005
Oh please. Dreadful jokes interspersed with even worse music. Makes the Partridge Family look almost average.
scarletfeather 01/24/2005
I liked the one who wore the wool cap with the Texas accent.
Solenoid DH 01/24/2005
The television show wasn't anything to brag about. But they had a couple of good songs - both written by the underappreciated Neil Diamond.

was actually a pretty big fan of this show during it's 2nd coming in the mid-1980's. watched a lot of it. Always thought the Monkees were akin to other great comedy teams, plus they played music, which was great for me when I was 12. sure, the stuff might not hold up now as an adult, but i owe the Monkees a lot. without hearing Micky sing I'm a Believer, or Mike and the others sing more obscure stuff, i might never have developed a taste for rock. that means no Dylan, Beatles, Springsteen etc. i could be sitting here now listening to Britney SPears or Maroon 5, instead of Hank Williams. and it all started with that show.

I remember when I used to see this show as a child. I love them all ! I act as Micky Dolenz in The Vintage Monkees Cover Band www.vintagemonkees.net

I SAW THIS SHOW IN THE EIGHTIES, AND I DID^N`T KNOW IT WAS FROM THE SIXTIES, AFTER IVE DISCOVERED IT, AND I BECAME A SIXTIESGREAT FAN. THEY WERE A DREAM FOR A GIRL LIKE ME. I STILL LOVE THEM A LOT.

This show was so great, when i WAS A CHILD. And thirty years after it is still so great.

Awesomely silly 60s sitcom. Extremely over-the-top and plain crazy! Also, the songs were great too. Can't wait to buy on DVD!
UrethraMiacin 03/20/2004
Loved the episode where Mr. Universe Dave Draper showed up to flex his muscles on the beach. He also caused a monsoon when he exhaled. Quality programming.

Zany, hilarious fun. Mike, Mickey, Peter and Davy were ahead of their time. No wonder this show won two Emmys.
getback 05/22/2003
A great show we all know it just a rehashing of "A Hard Days Night" ,but it was fun and the music for a while was good.It did what it set out to do entertain. And it still does.
Keetsula 03/13/2003
This was one show I had to see every week. The music was representative of the era we lived. I was a high school junior when the show aired, and the Monkees were fodder for lunchroom discussions. I had a crush on Peter Tork and Davy Jones. The four of them had a great sound and their antics were first-rate comedic.

Gotta love the Monkees. So silly and great singers.
GlendaLee 11/18/2002
The show was a riot in '66 when I was 12. It's still funny and appeals to a wide variety of audiences. The music is still fresh and topical. And if you go to one of the concerts, Micky Dolenz sounds better than ever!
radiogman 08/15/2002
Silly and Childish, should have only played saturday mornings, good music though.
deniseuk 05/16/2002
I'm 20 years old and think the Monkees are the best group. In my generation there is a lot of bad vibe songs and the monkees are a refreshing and good sound of music. My fave is Micky I think when they were out in the 60s he was gorgeous and funny. The show was orginal and clean with great music. I only wish there was something like that today! The music still lives on today, at football grounds across the UK crowds are singing to the tune of Daydream Believer
oodie 03/29/2002
brilliant! john lennon called them funnier than the marx brothers..you know what? they are. plus the music is top notch!
Errol 02/13/2002
It's bad but it's the kind of bad that makes it mildy amusing to watch once in a while - just because it's so bad!
ThePatriotfan 10/19/2001
Im rating it a 5, because me & my friend use to LOVE this show when it was on Nick at Night, we never missed it. Now we try & catch it on screen gems. We thought it was great. Now that I am a little older I think, well maybe it wasnt great, but it was good. We also use to think Micky was soo cute. :)

My favorite show of all time, along with the Partridge Family!!!! I was a big fan back in the 60's and I still am. Just a fun show!!
knowhere man 06/27/2001
I always got a bad taste in my mouth with the PRE-FAB four. Even in grade school I could realize the phonyness of this colaboration and being a BIG BEATLES fan made it worse. The show reminded me of the BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE show. These guys were a CASH IN RIP OFF!
kissmerichard 05/21/2001
This show is so off the wall you have to laugh. The Monkees are now my all-time favorite band because of this show.
mschleisner 05/13/2001
O.K. ya got me, I was a fan, and David Jones was so dreamy. The teenager in me went wild. Actually I see him now and damn we both still look good.
callmetootie 04/05/2001
It's simple: you have to be a die-hard fan of The Monkees who collects their records and lunchboxes to enjoy their show. I personally didn't collect squat with the monkees on them, and I'm not starting now.
CastleBee 03/19/2001
Let me just start by saying I was a huge fan of the Monkees during their 15 minutes of fame in the 1960's. I had their albums, memorized all their songs, helped to form and joined a fan club, bought many a 16 and Tiger Beat magazine just to have 8X10 color glossies of them to string all over my groovy little attic bedroom, and above all would never have considered missing even one episode of their show. But, alas, I was in 6th grade and one of millions of pre-teen kids who were aggressively targeted by the creators of this show. Still, had they not been cute, funny and talented to a certain degree even we wouldn't have bought it for long. Face it; these guys were extremely good - at schlock - which is apparently at least a semi-valid pop art form because it shows no sign of dying out. Had they really wanted to be taken as seriously as they claim they did, they should have been able to see at least some of the writing on the wall when they got involved in this campaign to charm the teenybopper set. Instead they jumped for the buck only to complain when they got it that it wasn't really everything they had wanted. These claims come off sounding as hokey as the many claims by successful TV actors who whine and imply on talk shows that they are too good for television - you see, the theatre is really my TRUE love. May I just say - gag me and join the group boys. Most of us end up doing many, many things in life that do not seem to fit our potential or talents and for a lot less cash. The fact that Mr. Nesmith, Dolenz, Tork and Jones were able to afford to go on and live comfortable lives and continue to express themselves in the manner they would care to is I'm sure due to their own desires, talents and efforts. But don't write off the idea that, if it had not been for all the frenzied little Monkee addicts who lived to hear them sing and act nutzy, they may never have had the opportunity to do so in quite the way they have. I still feel a nostalgic fondness for them. I even attended one of their early revival concerts back in the '80's. But I'm just not seeing any real deep meaning here beyond the pop tunes, commercialism and light comedy.

The Monkees, Micky, Mike, Peter, and Davy; and the creators of, were and in some cases still are way ahead of their time. The concept of "creating" a band, having a sitcom, producing the albums, doing the tours, and the insanely huge marketing, had never or for that matter still hasn't been done before. When I watch the Movie, "Head" my mind boggles at the concept that people didn't understand it. It is completely clear to me. And in that I know that The Monkees (with a little help from "Johnny" himself Jack Nicholson) were set decades beyond their time. Although the mere thought of them being compared to the Backstreet Boys, NKOTB, and 'NSync sickens me, I realized they were a manufactured sound. But in thier later years the managed to break free of "the Box" and continue on with their own self-expression. I am Still waiting for the Backstreet Boys to show that kind of guts. The Monkees knew the had it made if they stuck to the basic format and they chose to break free and risk their career on their own form of Art. Mike help lauch the artistic side of music video making as we know it today. Peter was so in tune with his spiritual side and came out quite the opposite of "the dummy" that he was so often portrayed as. Micky went on the become a successful director in England, and Davy, well they all aren't perfect. Last I heard of Davy, he was still doing Teen Idol Tours. I think Peter sums everything up in his Monologue in Head. Here he begins describing conceptual reality or the state in which every veiwed the Monkees, to Actual reality, who the Monkees really were. ". . . Am I being clear? For we must allow the reality of "The Now" to just happen as it happens. Observe and act with clarity, for where there is clarity there is no choice, and where there is no choice there is misery. But then why should I speak for I know nothing." -Peter Tork- "Head"

The Monkees were a phemomenon, and to say that they were not at least a good show is doing it a great injustice. Were some of the scripts poor? Yes, but what show doesn't have that problem? That has no bearing on their acting abilites. A good actor playing a poor role is still a good actor. The Monkees was a fun show. Their music only added to the overall fun of the show. Yes, they did play their own instruments (eventually) and they could sing. If you stink, you're albums don't go to #1. Certainly you don't have four consecutive number one albums. And now, they are at it again. The 2001 tour starts up in just a few weeks. Are they doing it for the money? I doubt it. Something tells me they all have better ways of making money. I think they're doing it because they love it. Have they always loved it? No, in fact I think all of them at times have nearly hated it. Before being critical, go to a show. Just watch them live. It's an amazing experience. Even after thirty-five years, they've still got it.

The best show/music group I've ever had the pleasure to watch (and I'm only 15 lol) I can't WAIT to see them tour in March!! I don't know why the only got 54 outta 112 in ratings on here, they're my fave show!

One can only use so many superlatives! The Monkees had a tremendous TV show and became a groovy band to boot. Say what you will about their origins, God alone knows the number of ways their impact is still being felt in pop music and entertainment, and their clean yet irreverent humor continues to delight audiences across the globe. On reruns or the concert stage, they provide great entertainment for the entire family. And they're *still* too busy singing to put anybody down!
Sleepy_Jean 01/05/2001
I only wish there was a rating higher than great. The word great doesn't even begin to describe them! LONG LIVE THE MONKEES!!!!
rhmorganitte 01/05/2001
Being only 8 years old when the show first aired, I didn't get the "in-jokes" and other anti-establishment references that were in nearly every episode and in many of their songs. It wasn't until much later in life that I began to appreciate The Monkees for the revolutionaries they truly were....at a time and place where it was difficult for them to be revolutionaries (prime-time TV and bubblegum pop!) But aside from all that, I love The Monkees simply because they are entertaining! Maybe a little corny at times, but the show is still good and the songs are great!
commandowawa2 01/01/2001
THE MONKEES AIRED IN 66-68, A TIME WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGED RADICALLY. METAPHORICALLY, AS DEPICTED IN HEAD, WHEN WE REJECTED THE MONKEES WE REJECTED OUR INNOCENCE, EVEN THOUGH THEY THEMSELVES WERE NOT INNOCENT. EVEN AFTER READING ABOUT THEIR INDIVIDUAL FAULTS AND MISDEEDS, WATCHING THE SHOW AND LISTENING TO THE MUSIC STILL BRINGS BACK THAT INNOCENT TIME also, what other group of performers has there ever been who could act, sing, write, play instruments, and direct, all before age 25? on top of that, 2 of them had to learn to act and 2 to play instruments. Sometimes the scripts were terrible, but they (the monkees) were always good. they had to be the hardest working band in the history of rock. And how many shows have you seen where the cast apologizes to the viewers for bad material? So, considering the social conditions in which the show aired, and the varied and phenomenal talents of all concerned, i don't think such a phenomenon could ever occur again.
MickyNesmith 12/31/2000
The Monkees are one of my favorite groups, even though I'm only 15 and I never got to experience the Monkees in the 60's, although I wish I had. I love them becuz they were a television group who actually became a real band. People can say that they didn't play their own instruments and write their own songs, but if you actually read the Headquarters notes to all the songs played, you'll see that they all played on that record and they wrote some of the songs. That record is one of the best Monkees records ever made. The Monkees were awesome and still are! I've seen Micky, Peter, and Davy in concert once and have seen Micky once with the Teen Idols Tour and I loved both times. And I cannot wait for the tour in 2001! They are gonna rock, like usual, although I wish Mike would be touring, as well! Well, peace out! Later! MY FAVE MONKEE QUOTES "Due to a lack of interest, tomorrow's cancelled. "- Mike Nesmith "If you love music, you can play music."- Mike Nesmith "Everyone in the world needs love and I wish that we all would really love one another."-Peter Tork
SheLovesTork 12/29/2000
I have been a fan for fifteen years, and through the years I have grown to appreciate the Monkees music even more (their later 60s stuff is great!). It is too bad that the world still thinks they "didn't play their own instruments" because "Headquarters" -played solely by the Monkees, is a masterpiece! The show is simply fun to watch, and it provided the world with one important concept--music videos. "Head," their movie is misunderstood by most, is an insightful multi-level commentary and should be watched carefully. In 1986, the Monkees blew the rest away with their reunion tour, which was the top grossing tour of that year. It only goes to prove that they got better with age! I can't wait to see the Monkees upcoming 2001 tour!
