There was nothing like watching Rigginomics in the 1980's. Outside of Emmitt Smith and Marcus Allen ,he was the best running back to score TD's inside the 20. In fact, I give him a slight edge.

Another head down and damn the defense back, always looked like he was on the verge of falling down (especially talking to judges) but always got the yards.

Riggins was more than just a great runner, he was a leader. The Redskins players all looked up to him and he didn't dissapoint. Off the field he had quite a partying reputation but on the field he was all business. It's a different world nowadays. I remember when Riggins scored that touchdown against Miami in Super Bowl XVII he more or less just put the ball down on the ground and hugged a couple of teammates. These days, a guy gets 3.4 yards and scrapes out a first down and he pounds his chest and points downfield.

great running back. Blue collar, tough, never wanted to be the center of attention. Never thought he needed to take his helmet off and celebrate for doing what he got paid to do like so many of todays players. I'd take him over Emmit any day.

If you need one yard to win it all, there's no one else Id want to give the ball to! Riggins was a fullbacks fullback.

Rumors around Washington DC had it that John Riggins liked to drink and then hop in his car and pick up really young girls. All I know for sure about him is that he used to bulldoze his way through the NFC East - particularly the Cowboys. The Redskins were the masters of that Counter running play with Riggins in there. He was just a hard working, nose to the grindstone back that any team would have loved to have on their roster.
