maybe the best pound for pound fighter in the land. some say he used to pick his fights and to some degree he did but he never shyed away from a fighter and when people like clinton woods got there shot at him they soon wished they haddn't! Roy's only mistake was not stopping when he was at the top. At that piont he had won Super middleweight titles, lightheavyweight and heavyweight titles and his only defeat, a DQ, was avenged in the first round of the rematch. now past his best he is either just fighting cause he loves it or for the money but either way in his prime no one could match him.
mondance74 02/09/2007
what a boxer '''' he should of retired eariler with no dent in his record ,,he was the [ali] of his weight ..................
daedalus 02/10/2006
Should have been the best boxer since Ray Leonard. His reluctance to get in the ring with Michalczewski when they were both in their primes and his dual losses to Tarver are major blemishes on his record. It is very doubtful anyone who was available from middle to cruiser weight could have beaten him in his prime, but we will never know for sure. The upcoming Hopkins fight is too little too late to change the years of weak mandatory defenses and a gimmick fight like Ruiz.

he is the ultament and the fastest fighter but he made a mistake by challageing benard hopkins. Go to Best Buy And Buy The Greastest Knock Out Of Roy Jones Jr. He is the buisness.

Anyone who says Roy Jones jr. isn't one of the all-time greats they don't know greatness when they see it because he dominating Hopkins who alot of guys cannot defeat and he defeated james toney another future hall of famer yeah he lost his last 3 fighters but all great fighters lose or get ko'd at the end of their great career including ray leonard, ali, holyfield and many more in his prime he would've easily defeated tarver and johnson their good but not great he is just as good ray leonard and ray robinson

My personal favorite boxer of all time...I have never seen the kind of things done in the ring that Roy does...He toys around with opponents...From giving Toney and Hopkins boxing lessons, to avenging his contrersial loss to Griffin with a first round KO, to breaking Virgil Hill's ribs, to winning a Heavyweight title after starting his career as a Junior middleweight, to coming back down from Heavyweight losing 25 pounds of muscle and showing his heart against Tarver...The guy has a nice list of accomplishments...Hes like Sugar Ray Leonard and Ali put together...Roy just wasn't promoted right...He has fell off recently, but that happens to the best of em in this brutal sport...His lack of motivation was his downfall...Still has the chance to redeem his last couple of fights with a rubbermatch against Tarver...This is a huge risk for Roy! Before Roy was criticized for not taking risks in the ring...well the rubbermatch with Tarver will determine how much the former pound for pound king will have.

Overrated!? You have to be kidding me. In his prime, he could not be beat and he did it with STYLE. Before he got old and lost those two fights, he was undefeated in 40 fights. I always thought it was a shame that he had a loss for a DQ he got when he inadverdantly hit a guy when he was on his knee. Also, remember the Seoul Olympics when he got robbed of the gold medal? I just wish he was around in the 80's with Hagler, Hearns, and Leanard.
gman777 02/22/2005
one of the best, he is the best p4p of his era, didn't lose his first fight until after boxing for 15 yrs or so....a middleweight who got caught by a light heavy flush (and by the way, tarver walks around at 210-220 when not fighting).....the fact that he is a middle and went all the way up to heavy and won the belts says alot......did not duck darius, darius would not come out of germany (where he was ahead of montell griffith on the score cards after 4 rds....even when montell dropped him 3x!) which is why even b-hop wouldn't go there to fight him.....like any great fighter.....holyfield, ali, duran, etc, age catches up w/ you and you lose a step....his biggest attribute was the ability to fire at will and not get caught.....he's still fast, but not roy jones fast anymore, plus i believe he's lost a little spark for the game.....but when he was pumped and primed.....nearly unbeatable. ps-i also believe coming down from HW messed him up as well....i still think he has one more roy jones fight in him tho (then time to get out)

Roy Jones Jr. is somewhat of a mystery to me. I would say hes the best light heavy ever if he faced Dariusz Michlazewski but he ducked him for 7 years! James Toney was outclassed because he was too blubbery to mount a defense. However he did clown Bernard Hopkins with a broken hand in 1994. But there was simply not really that many people to fight in his class, but if he would of hung on for 1 more year he would of faced Tito for a big payday. I would say that if he retired after his first win over a very garbage fighting Tarver he should have retired with no real loss on his record. Top 5 All time.
Midaz 12/06/2004
Junior is a good, not great, fighter who steam rolled through an unchalleged division yet got beat consecutively when a worthy opponents developed.
Dade305Since99 11/20/2004
Very Great fighter . . . sad to see a legend outt his prime go out that bad
Montrose 10/09/2004
After losing back to back one punch knockuts his stock drops considerably. Athleticaly gifted, but lacked the desire and will of an all time great. Would rather play basketball than fight Michalzewski and other top fighters of his weight.
yumbaa 10/07/2004
Among the best top three boxers of all time.
callitdownthel ine75 08/29/2004
Antonio Tarver's shocking knockout win against Roy Jones Jr. proves one thing: anyone is susceptible to one great punch. As good as Tarver is yet to become, Roy Jones Jr. is still definitely one of the greatest ever. Roy dominated the weight classes he fought in for nearly a decade like few others in the past. Furthermore, he was undoubtedly the best pound for pound fighter in the 1990s. Not to take away from Tarver who was hungry- and took the opportunity to land the million dollar punch which changed boxing's current landscape. But for whatever can be said about Roy Jones Jr., to deny his place amongst boxing's all-time echelon would simply be wrong. He was every but as great as Billy Conn, Archie Moore, Bob Foster and possibly Ezzard Charles at light heavyweight. But even they had their significant losses to other great, hungry fighters. Roy is no different.
theauthor 08/23/2004
One of the most dominant boxers of all time with such a unique style. Does things in the ring that have never been seen before. Made successful transition from middleweight to heavyweight. Ask yourself how many other fighters have done what Roy has accomplished, not many. This guy barely loses rounds! You could hate him or love him but he's the M.J. of boxing with time left in his career to still add to his fantastic story.

I have a hard time calling Roy Jones an all time great. He has gone out of his way to avoid true competition. He has never been in a war. He has never had to rise from near defeats, like Leonard did Against Hearns. Granted, it may not be his fault that there is no competition in his weight class. I think Jones is a very good fighter, but I cannot call him great. If he can come back and beat Tarver convincingly and grant James Toney a rematch, I might, I say might reconsider.

Talent-wise - 5 stars. Career Management - 5 stars. Maximizing Earning Potential - 5 stars. As a Fighter - I'm not impressed!!!!!! Roy Jones NEVER went out of his way to seek out challenging competition. He created artificial challenges through bogus stunts: playing pro basketball the day of a fight. Knocking guys out with this hands behind his back. Singing (actually lip syncing) a rap song during his entrance into the ring. He needed to create challenges through ring competition. And it seemed like whatever weightclass Roy was in, when competition seemed to get close, he bailed out and moved up in weight. Say what you want about Oscar De La Hoya, that guy pursues challenging fights while Roy avoids them. No way would I rate him in the same class as Hagler, Duran, Ray Leonard, Hearns.
doctorseven 07/03/2004
Easily give him a 5 rating because he never lost a fight other than being disqualified which he avenged in a one round blow out! He was a multitime champion middleweight, lightheavyweight and a piece of (WBA) world heavyweight championship of the world. He beat antonio Tarver by unamimous decision but was upset for the first time and was knocked out in the 2nd round. He took on everyone that he could except in the heavyweights where he picked his opponents which was smart. One of the best fighters in his era.
jaywilton 06/29/2004
Jones is very good-but rating him highly as an all-time great after the Tarver fight-is a little premature.
TheEvilSaintEv an 05/28/2004
he brought nothing to the table (meaning: he didnt have any outstanding skill) and he hasnt beaten anybody worth naming. his biggest win wus against bernard hopkins, whoop de doo. and why the hell has he never decided to try and unify the heavyweight titles? he probably could have but y didnt he try? roy jones jr. is nuthin but a damn joke!
Capt_Mojo 04/17/2004
Best fighter I've ever seen on film, horrible on the business end. St, Martin get a clue, RJ would have killed Hagler, Hearns and Leonard one after the other.
Indio70 04/09/2004
I know, I said I would only award one five in this category. I lied. Jones, Jr. is better than Sugar Ray Robinson, he's like the same super-sized. I cautiously belive Jones could have beat Robinson at 160, why, Sugar started at 147 or less. Yes, Sugar Ray Robinson made the mold, but Roy made it mo' betta' ... Best Pound for Pound all time... you must have forgoten. Needs to beat up an aged Tyson or Holyfield and retire.
sultandadi 03/13/2004
listen to all the rj bandwagoners !!! ya roy jones is awsome but, cmon. i dont mean to dis him at all cause i think hes a great fighter but dont put him in the top 5!!!! you will embarrass yourself. hes one of the best pound for pound out there, maybe the best there is. but hes still a little guy and the best have got to be heavyweights. roy excelled for a few years and then just takes time off. dont tell me he cant fight hopkins again. it is tough when he doesnt really have any competition except for heavyweights now. he would get mauled by the best heavyweifgts out there. sorry...
St Martin 11/18/2003
Possibly the best fighter of the last 10 years but definitely the biggest a*$ehole.Hagler would have closed him down and murdered him
The Real Truth 11/14/2003
In a brutal sport that should be banned...he reigns supreme. I have never seen a more talented fighter. That includes both Sugar Rays and Ali.
jake jr 08/26/2003
The best. needs to get out of heavyweight division. Lewis, tyson, Klithsco, Tua, would kill him.
kid bazooka 08/02/2003
Im ny opinion he is overrated, he needs to show more.
easyrider247 07/08/2003
of the pound for pound fighters . he is the only!! one to never even come close to getting beat . ali , leanard, robinson, were all kicked around by somebody
D-ztroya 06/12/2003
roys the man.
imabeliever85 06/07/2003
It's too early to say where Roy Jones will rate in the annals of boxing history. But I can say this: He's the most naturally talented fighter I've ever seen. And he is so much better than any other fighter in the world today that I don't know of anyone in the world south of 220 pounds that can compete with this guy. But hopefully, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis will get their cracks at him. If Jones beats those guys, plus one or two more of the top heavyweights, then I think he will gone in his tory as one of the greatest fighters who ever lived for sure.
PlayaB04 05/16/2003
people need to give roy the respect he deserves because no one can beat him and he is the best
bigjohnson 04/21/2003
Pound for pound he has proven the best. Who is or ever was better ?
Southga 04/09/2003
Pound for pound, Roy Jones IS the greatest of all time. The best match would be Roy Jones and Evander Holyfield at 200 a piece with thier respective skills unchanged due to the propsed weight change. I don't want to hear any "no competition" BS either, because he's just that good. He is a 5 in my book.
jwack10 03/22/2003
By far no question, the best pound for pound fighter thats ever walked the planet. He's hard to hit and he hits hard. The combonation of hand speed, power, quickness, ring generalship, defense, i could go on and on. And as far as the notion that he dosent fight quality fighters is obsurd. Just one example, when he fought James Toney.Toney at the time was considered by many to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world.Look what happend. Plus look at alot of the other fighters that he's destroyed, alot of them have become title holders or top contenders. As of right now there is probally only one fighter in the world, period ,that might beat him and that would be Lennox Lewis , thats how good he is. We all know that he hasnt had any rivals or fighters that that have tested him ,wich the media tags that as a negative towards his place in boxing history , wich is unfair. Its clearly a testament to how truly great he is, and and how much better he is than everyone else . Put him in a time machine and he would do the same thing he is doing now against all the great fighters of the past. So enjoy watching his amazing skill while he is still around , your watching the best there has ever been!!
StockyBrawler 03/07/2003
Overated fighter. He has all the talent in the world, but who the hell has he beaten? No way does he rank with Billy Conn, Bob Foster, or any of the other light heavyweight greats.
allknowing 02/14/2003
very overrated ducking fights...heavey enough to go heavey weight..gonna fight a sorry ass Ruiz...plz no competion in his weight class ...the truth he is a Holmes of his time..
TheDez21 01/12/2003
I find it difficult to say a prime leanord or hearns would beat a prime Roy Jones Jr. for the fact that Jones outclasses every fighter I have ever seen in mastery of the basics. Jones also has some techniques other fighters can't execute effectively because they just don't have the gifts. If Jones wasnt nearly as good, and was more on par with his competition, but still winning, he would be looked upon as a great fighter, it makes no sense that because he dominates he is not a great fighter. Go to your local boxing gym and spar with one of the fighters there, see how much of a gap of skill there is, then when this same boxer fights against a pro, there will be another gap of talent and skill, then when this pro fights a top tier pro, there is another gap of skill...now think of this...if this top tier pro fights Roy Jones Jr. there will once again be another gap of skill and talent. Do you guys really think there is a nonheavyweight who has a chance against Roy Jones? Roy Jones actually looks bored in the ring, but if he fights Ruiz and comes out the way he came out in the second match against montell griffin, then I beleive Roy Jones is going to give a memorable performance. When you think about putting past fighters against present fighters in dream matchups it is a bit lopsided because you know the current fighter is bigger, stronger, more technically sound then the past fighter...but I think 50 years from now, when they consider their present day great fighter against a fighter against Jones, you will actually have a strong argument about who would actually win, because Jones is already ahead of this generation of fighters. Its almost as if took a champion from the year 2050, brought him back in time, named him Roy Jones Jr, and put him in the current field to fight. You guys should enjoy watching Jones fight, there possibly won't be another fighter as dominating as Jones again.
Ridn4lif69 12/20/2002
Regardless of who Jones boxes people will say he ducked somebody if he took Tavar then it would be he ducked Ruiz. The fact that Roy has no competition under the heavy's is why he is underrated. Roy has beat 11 boxers that was either previous, present, or future title holders. He's the only boxer that can goof off b4 or during a match and win at will. Its sad that people blame him for how easy he beats these guys. Maybe after he takes care of Ruiz he will get lil more respect
alrightjim 12/16/2002
I don't see any evidence that Jones has ducked anybody. He fought Toney and Hopkins, when both were in their prime, and licked them convincingly. Getting knocked down by Lou del Valle was not good, and it is this that won't let me rate him in the top five all time. At middleweight there is a lot of nasty competition for that honor, Charley Mitchell, Stanley Ketchel, Les Darcy, Charley Burley, Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Holman Williams, Sugar Ray, Dick Tiger, and Carlos Monzon. All of these men would have beaten him the night he was dropped by del Valle. Maybe he was just bored silly that night. Taking on Ruiz at heavy should answer all these questions. I purposely didn't list Harry Greb in the list of middleweights, because if Roy beats Ruiz, then it's either him or Greb that are the best middle of all time. One last thing, Jones can dominate an entire bout against a world class opponent and never throw a jab. Sometimes a fighter is so gifted we just can't appreciate what our petty eyes are watching.
cple 11/23/2002
Roy Jones is the most talented fighter of all-time, but talent does not equal greatness. IMO, he has done nothing to be considered in the top 30, let alone top 10 greatest fighters of all-time. I can admit he's dominated his opposition with ease and is incredibly talented, but his opposition ain't that great. Who has be beaten? James Toney and a young Bernard Hopkins? Jones is an all-time great, but he's not invincible or nearly as good as people think. I can think of a couple boxers from the past that could've beaten Jones: Moore, Charles, Robinson, Greb, Hearns, Leonard, Tunney, Patterson, Spinks, and many many more.
aper422 11/02/2002
never fought anyone that will be remembered years from now. scared of any real opponents
myztlplk 11/01/2002
To the boxing analysts...both those that make a living with their slanted opinions and the couch experts. Roy Jones Jr is undeniably the greatest fighter to ever stepped in the ring. He has risen from the middleweight...and outclassed his way through the light heavyweight division. He has defeated every opponent he has ever faced...to include the disputed Montell Griffin loss. (Let's be honest...is was a KO in both fights) Now he is stepping into the ring with a heavyweight fighter that he's giving 30+ pounds up to. The question: WHY? This is a man that can step away from boxing now and be financially sound, considered amongst the best of all time, and most importantly...his health. Unfortunately, (in my opinion) Jones is doing it for the majority of the boxing population that still does not believe. The blood-thirsty populace that can't grasp at the possibility that they are witnessing history every time Jones Jr laces his gloves. Is it really this fighter's fault that he is far superior to his competitors or that he never signed a contract with a thug promoter? History's greatest boxers have had rivals to propel them into legend...this is simply a man without that "other" fighter because he has obliterated every would-be challenger. On March 1, Jones Jr will again defeat a much heavier opponent (at the disgust of some boxing fans)...and gain a heavyweight title. However, he will never overcome those that want the impossible...to see Jones stumble.
TheGreatest 01/23/2001
He is no doubt, the most talented fighter of my generation. From day one, when he lost the gold medal at the seoul olympics(bull@#!@) he was the best pound for pound. He gets to much criticism for ducking opponents. He deserves to be recognized among the greatest of all time, because NOBODY, yes I said it, NOBODY has the pure raw talent that Roy posesses.
Johnny Roulette 01/07/2001
It's not something he has any control over, but without qualified competition I can't give him that fifth star. I've seen him less than dominate in some fights. He may very well be a five star boxer, but, due to a weak field, we probably won't ever know.
penguinman 11/23/2000
Roy Jones is the Bruce Lee of boxing. He is so much faster and skilled than his competition that it's almost impossible to find worthy opponents for him.
arisancheta 09/11/2000
Roy Jones Jr. is really the most talented boxer of all time. What he only lacks is the media help and somebody of his caliber to bring about a good rivalry which is usually being cooked for the likes of Tyson, etc. RJJ is the most graceful puncher of them all.
tyma6413om 07/12/2000
Roy Jones is the most physically gifted fighter of all time. He only has one of two possible problems. 1. He's a victim of his era, never had any competition to develop legendary rivalries to stake his claim. 2. He's so good that NOBODY can compete with him to give him legendary status.
