Probably my favourite boxer of all time, although I don't think he's the best ever. I have a tape of his three ring bloodbath with Tommy Hearns for and it is easily one of the most savage and exciting moments in sports history. A stone cold assassin in the ring, lethal with either hand.

One of the fab 4 from the golden age of middlewight boxing if not the golden age of boxing period. Boxing's certainly never been better since. It's hard to split Marvellous Marvin and Sugar Ray Leonard. Sugar Ray may've just edged it.

Marvin Hagler was a tough dude! Although not as great a boxer in my opinion. He was certainly intimdating, supremely confident and always in superb condition with the possible exception of his fight against Ray Leonard. I've heard that the weight restrictions proposed by Leonard's management had put the fight in jeopardy. Hagler, not thrilled with the prospect of losing the biggest payday of his career took the fight, but had to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. He came in drawn and weaker than he normally would have and just didn't have the juice left to hurt Ray late in the fight. It was a valiant effort but by the time Hagler was able to catch up to Ray his punches just didn't have the power. I agree with the gentleman that the best 3 rounds of boxing ever was Hagler-Hearns. I think a great fight would have been Hagler VS Carlos Monzon....with the little yellow gloves...(6 ouncers?) It would have been a war!

Marvelous Marvin is perhaps the best middleweight of all time. His record of 62 wins with only 4 losses pretty much says it all. He beat the best in his division; Hearns, Duran, and the robbery against Leonard. He had the ability to outbox or outslug opponents, and had a chin of iron. An all time great.
dylan55 05/18/2005
In his prime, he was the greatest pound for pound!!

My favourate ever fighter. Scared the hell out of Leonard in 1987. Leonard was running scared.

Not enough can be said about Marvelous Marvin Hagler as he was arguably the greatest middleweight since Sugar Ray Robinson. Brutally efficient and iron-chinned, Hagler was every bit as vicious as any fighter before and since. But for all his fights, his legendary battle with Thomas Hearns is perhaps his defining moment as he absorbed the 'Hitman's' punches, and in return pummelled him to unconsciousness in the greatest three rounds ever fought. Misunderstood by the general public during much of his career, Hagler is now one of the sport's most beloved figures and a fighter revered for his Spartan-work ethic.

greatest and toughest middleweight ever (robinson was the greatest welter not middle). he had power, the greatest technique, heart, perpetual stamina, an awsome list of victims, and a titanium chin. he was thoroughly cheated out of the leonard fight. leonard may have landed more punches, but he was never in real control of the fight. hes my 2nd favorite fighter (next to rocky marciano). he beat the best, he was the best, he is the best, he always be the best middle ever.
Taskmaster-Zero 07/28/2004
A great fighter and my personal favorite.
jaywilton 07/20/2004
Hagler was an excellent middleweight champ-even though he legitamately lost to Ray Leonard-who was probably the uncrowned champ well before he fought for the title after 50-or so-fights.

Marvin is truly THE MARVELOUS. He could box orthodox, could box southpaw, counter punch, brawl. Controlled and used all the type of punches. Leonard major accomplishment of surviving the fight and in flurries returning shots and showboating against THE MAN was a major feat, but should NOT have been rewarded with Leonard winning the fight. As the champ Hagler won the fight. Even without getting this last decision, Hagler was for THE unbeaten middle weight championfor years. He won his fights marvelously against tough opponents, the best available. (Natural middle weights and some people of original lower weight classes that thought they had what it took to beat THE MAN. (These blown ups, as people call him on this board, even blew up some more to WIN titles in even heavier divisions). His undefeated, undisputed title reign was in a time there were less world champion belts from so many abbreviated letter combinations (with a B in it), in a time with a lot less weight classes. Socre: 5- the great!

Where is the recognition? It is almost like the man did not exist. Where is the history of his life? I need to get inside the mind of the greatest box-fighter of all time. Where are the documentaries? I cry when i see his great fights. Let us all share the passion. Luke, South London

Real warrior never defeatedor discouraged in any of his fights.

The greatest middleweight ever, by a distance(Robinson was better as a Welter). Avoided no-one and had one of the best chins ever(Roldan knockdown was a slip).Of all the top fighters he's the last one I would have wanted to meet in a dark alley THE MAN!!!!!!
jake jr 08/26/2003
Greatest middle weight ever

"Marvelous" Marvin Hagler was one of the great midlewights who took on the best of the best. The best fight i seen him in was the fight with Hearns it was amazing i got the fabulos four out on rental there where some owsome fights in it but the hagler hearns fight was the best of the lot the two of them pushed thamselfs to the limit it was outstanding i give that fight a five aswell.
beop 06/14/2003
Yes Marvelous, you did beat Sugar Ray!
imabeliever85 06/07/2003
One of the greatest fighters of all time. He was the best middlewieght in the world for ten years (1977-1987, and defended the middleweight crown against Duran, Hearns, Mugabi, Hamsho twice, Sibson, and many others. His last fight was a decision loss to Leonard (his first loss in eleven years), but the fight was very hard to score, and I felt it could have called a draw.
BigStu 06/03/2003
Hagler was great . I loved his attitude . His obsessional devotion to training , his single-mindedness . He would never enter the ring in anything less than awesome condition . He could box superbly , and punch too . He took a punch as well as any other fighter in history . His fight with Hearns was a breathtaking thriller . Hagler was a real champion .
Mistachill 04/16/2003
Great fighter but he proved he wasn't the strongest mentally or smartest guy around in the Leonard. Tried too hard to out "shine" Leonard than just beat the crap out of him. Wanted to prove he was a bigger star than Leonard rather than concentrate on just beating him. He loses a lot of luster in my eyes because no way Leonard should've beaten him (and I'm a big Leonard fan). His biggest fights were against blown up welterweights (Hearns, Duran, Leonard). Legit middleweights he fought weren't all that impressive (Hamsho & Antuofermo probably the best). Great fighter none the less, but the Leonard fight is a serious black mark on his career.
boxfan 03/12/2003
marvin hagler as a middlweight boxer was about 25 years before his time and 15 years after his time to get the recognition that he deserves. Marvin fighting Graziano or Roy Jones jr would have been even though the weight classes are convulted now. But he did get some money he did give us the worlds best 3 round professional fight ever.(hearns) He has given us a lesson in boxing and class that has yet to exceeded.
allknowing 02/14/2003
out-showmanned by Ray Leonard...he's a little over rated ..tough as nailz but when it came to skilled fighters like ray he came up short
Dan1 01/26/2003
When you look at boxers today thats when you realise how good Marvelous was. A true undisputed fighter who took on the best. He took the Leonard fight a year passed his best, but i still think he should have got the decision. He is over that now and is a happy, chilled out guy. A great roll model to todays ear biting, drug taking, rapists and wife beater who call themselves fighters.
Guitar Coyote 01/04/2003
marvin great fighter lion in ring wars with antefermo and hearns proved his heart
Sewelly 12/25/2002
A guy at the top of his game and always ready to fight. Took on all comers and came out on top, including against Leanard. A gifted sportsman and true legend of the ring
alrightjim 12/13/2002
Hagler could box with the boxers and slug with the sluggers. He fought and beat the men required to make him the dominant middleweight of his time. But a mauling Antuofermo made him look ordinary in their first fight, and in the defining fight of his career, he allowed himself to be out-showmanned by Ray Leonard. This talk that Hagler really won that fight may excuse the result, may win him a battle, but it loses him the war, as big bad Marvin couldn't knockout a blown-up welterweight past thirty who hadn't fought in three years. Lucky for Hagler there was no Monzon or Tiger or Robinson or Greb. He loses to all these men.
cple 11/26/2002
Marvelous Marvin Hagler was the epitomy of WARRIOR. His work ethic was second to none, his chin was made of granite, his tenacity crumbled his foes, and he could box circles around almost every fighter of his era. Add in his southpaw style and you got one of the toughest fighters to beat of all-time. Defeated the likes of Mugabi, Hearns, Duran, and Antuofermo over a seven year reign and 12 title defense. Ducked no one. Lost a questionable decision to Ray Leonard then retired. But that doesn't tarnish his excellent career.
Roy_Freddy 11/23/2002
A great Middleweight , Marvin Hagler never got all the acclaim that he truly deserves. The Marvelous One gave us some of the best Middleweight fights in the history of boxing. And he was not afraid to fight anyone . A truly fierce warrior he came into the ring to fight and not run for most of the round like Ray Leonard . The fight with Duran was absolutely terrific . Both men came to fight and both gave it their all with Duran leading after the 13th and almost winning it . Hagler was absolutely robbed in his fight with Ray Leonard. It was a close fight but Hagler scored the harder , more effective punches . However , the judges only saw the Pitty-Patty punches Leonard landed on top of Marvin's gloves. The judges awarded Leonard a victory he did not deserve . Hagler quit boxing in disgust . To this day he does not speak with Leonard. Marvin Hagler will always remain one of the really tough guys in boxing history.

Awesome. Can't give him 5 stars because of his loss to Sugar Ray. But what an absolute badass. Tough as a truck stop steak and had more guts than a slaughterhouse. Who could forget his war with Tommy Hearns? Easily one of the great middleweights of all time.
Frankie Da Bull 10/11/2002
I might be overrating him a bit but when he was fighting Hamshu, Hearns, Mugabi, he was the baddest man on the planet. Top 5 middleweight of all time
jmiz 01/21/2002
many who have posted have touched on the keys to Mr. Hagler: 1.) he put the bad in bad ass; 2.) he was a great, powerful fighter who could KO a guy with either hand and with a variety of punches (when his uppercut landed, you literally thought the guy's head would pop off); 3.) he was involved in some of the greatest fights of all time during a high-water mark in the middleweights (believe me, you'd take Hearns and Hagler in a tag team vs. any combination of Tito, Roy Jones and/or Hopkins); 4.) an all-time great finisher; and 5.) when he retired, he retired. Also was a guy whose first fights were in prison (you don't see that anyomre) .... broke my heart when the glamour child beat him (I had Sugar Ray winning on my card, too ....)
maddmarxx 01/09/2001
Unlike many fighters,Hagler was in the game at a prime time for his weightclass. He fought everybody, alot of them more than once. One great memory I have of him is when he retired.Because he did just that.He retired.
Johnny Roulette 01/07/2001
What an absolute badass!
magellan 06/08/2000
Maybe the only boxer that I can remember who came close to matching Tyson for the intimidation factor. Sugar Ray was too suave to be scary - Tommy Hearns too lanky. Foreman had too much personality, and Larry Holmes never really struck me as being especially menacing. But Hagler... he would come out with his game face on and shaved head shining. A scary man...
Munson 02/22/2000
I don't think that Marvelous Marvin gets the respect that he deserves. He was a great fighter and warrior. His three round bout against Tommy Hearns was one of the best fights of the 80s and, maybe, of all time. Sure, he didn't have the personality of Sugar Ray and that hurt his popularity. But, in terms of pure boxing ability, no one of that time was better.
