I would put Evander up there in the top 15 boxers of all-time. As far as heart and desire is concerned, maybe number 1.
georges11 10/07/2007
Holyfield is a tough tough customer. He trains like a fiend. I do not think he would ever give in. He is one boxer who I think would actually fight to the death.
godlybrotha 01/29/2007
I've followed "The Real Deal" ever since his disappointing disqualification in the '84 Olympics, a fight where he clearly was the superior boxer. He is undoubtedly one of the, if not THE greatest cruiserweights of all time...fearless, scientific, and intelligent in the ring. Holyfield was known for his warriors heart, and could hold his own against boxers much larger than he. I was practically the only one of all my friends and aquaintances who thought that Evander could take Tyson. I wish he would have retired years ago, as he is but a shell of his former greatness. But in his prime, the Real Deal was among the best.
Randyman 08/18/2006
Evander looked pretty good tonight. His punches were quick and accurate, and he seemed to really enjoy his victory. But in the grand scheme of the heavyweight division, it's still hard to see where he fits in. He fought an insurance salesman tonight, and that's a far cry from a true heavyweight contender, so it's still hard to measure his comeback just yet. Holyfield has always been one of my favorite fighters, and that hasn't changed, still, I would prefer to see him retire, despite his win. To his credit, he can still bring the fans in, and I'm betting even in the year 2006 (or later), that a fight against Mike Tyson would still sell out the house. And I'm betting he can still kick his ass. The five stars is for his overall career.

hes crap. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
GnR 03/06/2005
Heart where there is no more heart. The last of the leave it in the ring fighters. Should have retired at 36 years old.
gman777 02/22/2005
he was the real deal....as a cruiser and a heavy....something people forget, he was not a natural HW and beat a dangerous tyson, and personally thought he out fought lewis (the second fight, especially looking at lewis' face even a week after they fought).....he also beat and took on other big HW's.....only started losing bad as he neared the big 40 yrs in age....great chin, great heart, stamina, conditioning, good def, great counters, and good power....has to be atleast considered best of his era.....as far as fighting dirty as some people say, not his fault he is constantly bobing and weaving even when he is inside....and greats like marciano also were a little dirty (many of his short rights can be argued as short elbows.....i'm Italian and i'll admit that

Legend. Please retire now and stop destroying your legacy and health
Nutcase 09/13/2004
ripping of Marciano. he headbutts and has no brains.
BUMHOLE 09/02/2004
Rip off of Marciano trying to be courages. Tyson would have smoked him to his grave if they fought in the 80s. But better than Lewis.
TheEvilSaintEv an 07/27/2004
skills, chin, heart, power, and stamina of a legend. true, he was dirty, but then so is lennox lewis, mike tyson, sandy saddler, and harry greb but look at where they are in this category. if only he beat lewis, then he would be the best heavy of this era. problem is he loses to nobodies and jokes (byrd, ruiz, bowe, lewis, etc.) and he doesnt know when to retire. he may have been dirty, but at least he had other talents, too.
Mistachill 07/07/2004
Underrated fighter. Though Mike wasn't in his prime, he beat a still dangerous Mike Tyson who had only been beaten by Buster Douglas at that time. Nobody is close as a Cruiserweight. Just wish he'd get out of the game now.
swangmaster8 07/06/2004
One of the greats. He beat the champ, and would have smoked him worse if tyson didn't bite his ear.
Mike tyson fan 06/14/2004
a slugger, butshould of been beaten by Tyson.
humberhigh 06/11/2004
Good Fighter with a nice left hook. But, fights dirty Warrior my ass. Uses elbows, his head, and fists to beat opponents. Would of got smoked if he fight Tyson in the early 80's.
Indio70 04/09/2004
The Greatest of his generation (along with Jones, Jr.), should have retired after Tyson. I mean isn't that castle in ATL paid for? Last to know (it's over), after Toney kicked his a$$, I hope he doesn't fight again. Unfortunately, I think he's going to end up worse off physically than Ali. The Best Heavy since Holmes. Spent it all v. Bowe. Beat Tyson easy (unfortuneately) twice, that's why Mike bit his ear off (can't believe he fixed his would be legendary ear), couldn't face getting knocked / head butted out again. No loss of respect for the losses against Lewis. PLEASE RETIRE! Pioneered / innovated a genuinely genius use of his head with forward movement, that will not be allowed to be duplicated anytime soon.
sultandadi 03/13/2004
the real deal baby !! cant question the heart in this man !! a real warrior !! one of the greatest for sure !! good thing he wasnt the biggest heavyweight cause he would have rivaled ali for the greatest title !! well, maybe not but close !!
Narud Otrebor 01/22/2004
The best cruiser ever, sure...but a hugely overblown rep at heavyweight. He was an exceptionally dirty fighter who did more damage with his melon and elbows than he ever did with his hands. Sorry, but beating Bowe one out of three (that with the aid of FanMan after getting busted up in the first half of the fight against a fat, unfocused Big Daddy); struggling with the likes of Dokes, Cooper, a fossilised Holmes and a 463-yo Foreman; and slapping around a shot Moorer or a 10-years-past-prime (and extremely overrated in his own right) Tyson doesn't make you great. And that opinion is made totally ignoring his disgusting hipocrisy and self-righteousness. A damn good pro indeed, but definitely no legend.
jake jr 08/26/2003
Like Spinks, holifield should have stayed a light heavyweght
$$TOMMY$$ 07/10/2003
Evander Holyfeild was a great i wish i could give him more than a 4 but the only reason i didnt was because he never retired his last fiight with Chris Byrd was crap he got malled chris picked him of bit by bit at least if he retired he would never have had that embaresment but boxer's seem to think that thell be great for ever and who can blame them if you where them what would you do.
Mark McKee 04/13/2003
Evander Holyfield is one of the top four or five heavyweights to ever enter the ring. His longevity was only matched by Ali,Louis, Holmes and possibly Lennox Lewis. He is one of the few heavyweights that would have been an equal match for Ali in his prime with speed, endurance, stamina. His career speaks for itself.
Southga 04/09/2003
Holyfield is the best boxer of all time -- he's a slugger, he's quick, and he's a student of the sport. He would beat Ali, he beat Foreman and Tyson, and he was too old to fight Lenox. I don't like Holyfield, but he is the best. He deserves a 5.
allknowing 02/14/2003
would have never been champ if Tyosn hadn't snapped in the early 90's. He might not even deserve to be in the top twenty here. He lost to Michael Moorer! He couldn't even hurt an ancient George Foreman. He lost to Lewis TWICE! That first fight had fix written all over it. He did legitimately beat a washed up Tyson once ...those are the facts and truth...Ruiz beat him twice..in his prime he was awesome now he is ..slow and full of excuses..fights people out there prime and of course he looks great doing it Tyson would knocked him out in the 90's
alrightjim 12/16/2002
He wasn't the greatest heavy of all time, but neither was he as bad as too many folks rating him here have subjectively, and inaccurately, portrayed him. He was more than just a head butt. He was a warrior, found ways to win where so many others have lost, and he made himself a champion. He could be hit, but his chin was solid, and he could hit hard enough to give any opponent pause, although the iron chins of Marciano and Ali and Jeffries were beyond his power to hurt. And this talk that he beat a washed up Tyson is all hindsight. I recall little talk of this when the fight took place. I recall folks saying how Tyson was going to destroy him and blah, blah, blah. It was only after Holyfield took care of their anti-hero, that they came up with the washed up excuses. Holyfield could bang with either hand, but especially the hook, and he ripped to the body and up to the head in textbook fashion. He strategically clinched, turned and pushed his opponents just enough to get off with the cleaner harder blows first. He had skills and qualities the uneducated, over-opinionated eye simply can't appreciate.
aper422 11/02/2002
Cheater, all he has is a good head bunt. Tyson would have destroyed him had they fought earlier. He couldn't even take down foreman. Whata chump. Tyson was kicking his sorry ass until he bit him. But I was glad he did it.
Johnny Roulette 01/07/2001

He couldn't even hurt an ancient George Foreman. He lost to Lewis TWICE! That first fight had fix written all over it. He did legitimately beat a washed up Tyson once. He was using dirty tactics in the second fight and the tide was turning before Tyson snapped, getting sick of the headbutts. I might have thought more of him if he hadn't sounded so much like a dirty politician after the first Lewis defeat. Prime on prime Tyson would have destroyed him. Holyfield couldn't emerge until the field became seriously watered down. As soon as it picked up again he fell again. C'mon...the guy lost to Riddick Bowe twice!

I'm a HUGE Evander fan. Have been since his cruiser weight days. I'll never put him ahead of Ali, but he's right behind as far as I'm concerned.

Impressive power and speed for a guy of his size. Greatest heavyweight in competition today.
