Brown was the best and still holds his own against the modern players. I remember him in a bowl game of some kind in the mid fifties when he played for Syracuse. That was the first time I ever saw him. Syracuse had its back against the wall and Brown took a kick deep in the end zone to run it out. Unfortunately, I don't remember him scoring, but it was a valiant try.I see that political correctness has hit the Syracuse Orangemen and Orangewomen. The team is now called the Orange. I suppose the tie with the Protestant Orange Order in Ireland was the reason. What is next? Notre Dame Irish to the Green?

Check the stats. All the other greats must line up behind Brown.

by far the greatest player of all time. Anyone rating below 5 doesn't know football and never saw him play.

Without question the greatest football player/running back of all-time. Still a man among boys in any room he enters. Anyone that would deny this man a 5 on a scale of 5 should have their head examined. They don't make men the way they used to and they'll never make another one like this guy. The double-greatest.

A great runner, a disinterested blocker, and a horrible person. Brown had a hobby of smacking his girlfriends around. I'll take Walter Payton over Brown as a running back, and also as someone I'd want to date my daughter.

he is the best of all time, he had power and speed, a combination you never see in a running back

Among his athletic achievement, I admire the fact that he is working on an issue that is becoming more of a problem in this country, and that is the lack of fatherhood. Society, as a whole, is trying to diminish the significance of fathers in the lives of children, and many men are surcumbing to this horrible lie. I have supported and I will continue to support Jim Brown and his committment to this important issue. I me, how many sissies will we have to have in this country before people start to realize that fatherhood is every bit as important as motherhood. This achievement will be much greater than his accomplishments in football.

Perhaps the greatest player of all-time, Jim Brown was definitely the greatest running back ever. Blessed with power, speed and overall skills, Brown was a threat in every game he ever played- whether he was injured or not. Jim Brown had heart, and once played a game with a broken bone. Moreover, Brown was durable as he never missed a game in his entire career. He was, at the very least, truly one of professional football's all-time greats.

The best Runningback to ever play the game. I wish he had played longer, but no doubt the time he played could never have been played better.

I gotta agree with that. 5.2 yards per carry is pretty much it. Has anyone even come close?

His 5.2 yds.per carry over his career pretty much ends the argument. The most dominant player in history and really isn't even close.

#3 back in nfl-history, behind walter payton and barry sanders. (why is this coach guy rating players on their life decisions, are you there mother or something, don't disrespect true talent just because you're miserable)

He was the best runner in the history of the NFL. He was also one of the poorest blockers, despite his size and strength. He didn't block for other runners and he didn't block for the quarterback. Does it matter? Contempory fullbacks who did block, such as Ameche and Taylor, ended up with more championship rings. It could be that they fit better into a team concept.

A bad guy. . .treats women like the Marquis de Sade. . .and don't start with his comminuty service - you can't get credit for helping gang members while hitting women, it doesn't cancel out. Back to football- Brown racked up numbers in 9 seasons (with less games) that are still mind-boggling. He left the game in the prime of his career. He racked up all those yards while defenses were simply stacked against him. . .Jim Brown was one of the great forces in the history of football. Best quote from a retired NFL player who described 'how to tackle Brown' - Grab him. Hold on. Wait for help. That's enough for me.

He had the moves, and he had the power. Many of his peers were astonished at his play. And he also played lacrosse while at Syracuse.

One of the greatest pure runners of all time, but a quitter who refused to block, something mandated by his position.

I was lucky enough to have had my dad take me to Municipal Stadium to see the legendary Jim Brown on numerous occasions. There has never been a greater RB and he was a great athlete. He's in both football and lacross halls of fame. All things considered, no one can compare with him as a RB.

WHEW, I'M AFRAID THAT YOU REALLY CANNOT APPRECIATE THE GREATNESS OF THIS GUY UNLESS YOU SEE HIM IN ACTION. I RECOMMEND GOING INTO NFL.COM, CLICK ON NFL FILMS, SEARCH FOR HIM IN THE SEARCH MENU AND WATCH IN AWE. 104 YARDS PER GAME, 5.2 YARDS PER CARRY,MORE THAN ONE TOUCHDOWN A GAME,AND THE MOST IMPRESSIVE STAT.. O GAMES MISSED IN NINE YEARS. WHAT REALLY SEPARATES HIM FROM OTHER ALL TIME GREATS THOUGH IS HIS MENTAL POWER, SURE HE WAS A PHYSICAL POWERHOUSE (THE MOST POWERFUL PLAYER EVER IN HIS POSITION) AND HAS SPRINTER SPEED AND UNCANNY BALANCE, BUT IT WAS HIS PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH TOWARDS THE GAME THAT REALLY IMPRESSED ME. ALWAYS GETS UP FAST EVERY TIME HE WAS HIT, NO MATTER HOW HARD HE WS HIT (AND IN THOSE DAYS, DEFENSES WERE GEARED IN STOPPING THE RUN, AND EVERY DEFENSE WAS GEARED TO STOP JIM). NEVER WENT OUT OF BOUNDS ON PURPOSE AND ALWAYS INTIMIDATED AND IMPRESSED EVEN THE GREATEST DEFENDERS. SURE, OTHER BACKS HAVE ALREADY SURPASSED MOST OF HIS RECORDS, BUT BROWN PLAYED 4 SEASONS W... Anyone who rates him at less than 5 knows nothing about the game of football. The man was simply an unbelievable player. Best of all-time. Just look at the numbers. All done in an era of 12 game seasons. Even more impressive, watch some film. The best. Period.

Jim Brown is probably the best RB ever to play the game. But that doesn't make him the best player. And what bothers me is that he gave up the NFL for an acting career. What an idiot.

Much has been said about the greatness of Jim Brown and rightly so. His stats (rushing yards, yards per carry, touchdowns, etc.) are formidable when compariing him among the all time greats, but it is the intangibles that, to me, separate him from all others. The most glaring point is that he only missed on half of one game (due to a broken wrist) in nine seasons. Considering the amount of punishment he received, that fact seems inhuman. Opponents knew he was coming and they were met head on by Brown; he dished out just as much as he received. And their playing days were when football was brutal in its tackling styles. The reverence in which other players, players of hall of fame caliber, speak of him should be noted. Deacon Jones has openly said he did not like tackling Jim Brown. Paul Warfield and Ray Nitschke have both commented on Jim Brown's intelligence not just as a tactical runner but as a psychologist on the field as well. But to truly get a sense of how great Jim Bro... Read more

If this poll was taken by educated football fans then Brown would rated number 1 all time. But when I see Barry Sanders ahead of him, I know this is a 2nd rate website. Please compare Browns stats with anyone and you will see that I am correct.

He was a man among boys. 100 yards per game for his entire career. Perhaps the greatest lacross player ever. 3-year starter in basketball, track star. Offered a baseball contract by the Yankees out of high school. 6-2, 235 18" neck, 30" waist. With a mind and a social conscience as well.

Jim Brown was great in his time. In this era of faster, stronger, quicker athletes he would have been a good fullback. Mike Alstott type.

by far the best running back of all time. highest yard per average, except for sanders...played when there were 12 games a season, retired at age 29, the hash marks were different, a world class lacrosse player at syracuse...you may not like him, but he was dominant

The best there's ever been. Line up, tell the defense what play you're going to run, run it for an average of more than 5 yards per carry during your career. 235 pounds and a sub-30 inch waist. That's not even human. And, he may have been the greatest lacrosse player ever, too.

In the words of Sam Huff, Jimmy Brown was without a doubt the greatest football player to ever put on a uniform. In addition, he is the greatest athlete of all time as he was a great basketball, baseball and track and field star. People that watched him play also say he was even better at lacrosse than football.

Jim Brown has the 2nd best game as a rookie with 248 yards rushing in a game. Jim Brown was a great man on the field and of the field. Jim took running backs from victims to the hard men in the NFL.

Jim Brown is the all time leading rusher- that tells you something. But what I like is that he was a big guy, he didn't run around linebackers, he ran through 'em. He was the man.

Without question, the greatest football player of all time. He retired at the top of his game. Imagine his numbers had he played as long as some of the other great running backs.
