Before the injuries, I would have given her a 5. I thought she was such a fantastic player. I really hope she can return to that form of winning grand slam events because I would love to add one more star.

dont know if she was the smartest player - but definitely she was the most naughty won. embarrassing how respectless she talked about her opponents and that she always felt being treated unfair and misunderstood. when she would have been able to show courage and fighting spirit - in that time loosing more and more to the more powerfull players - she gave up and finished her short carreer. just a number one between . that 1 is for her bad behaviour - otherwise i would give her a 3 (ok).

i m sorry, i dont share that opinion. hingis was an overrated player who was able to take profit of that big big gap between grafs last weaker years. this is why she became the youngest number one. she didnt earn that by a real competition. yes, she was surely giftet with touch like not many other players before. but at the same time she had this weak weak service. i dont see how she ever would have found a way to compete with that hard hitting monsters. my impression is that she lost more and more the contact to the actual level of playing. besides that (its not so important) she never had this kind of champion spirit, that isnt searching for reasons to excuses when defeated. like she did. these champions always look for improving their OWN weaknesses. this is the stuff that real great players are made of.

I have to say I think you all got this one wrong. Hingis was the best player ever for her age up to about 18. She absolutely annihilated Venus Williams at the US Open in 1997. She reached 6 straight Aussie Open finals by the time she was about 21. Personally I think that she'd have found a way to compete and win against the bigger hitters on the tour - so superior was her tennis brain and range of shots. Nobody on tour, Serena, Venus, Lindsay Davenport, Capriate, Pierce, Henin-Hardenne or Klijsters had a range of shots remotely as good as Hingis. Had injury not cut short her career, she'd have been a contender for the best player ever. All that said, she was very disrespectful to Steffi to server underarm in the French Open final in 99. The greatest of all time won that one.

I first knew her at the age of 14. And I was as same age as her's. And, I even had her picture when she was 14. Now, at the age of 22, she quit. I'm shock! I played tennis because of her. I adore and love her. I wanted to see she playing again. But then, it's difficult. I know. I don't play tennis anymore. I don't have the strength and the spirit that she always give to me. I'm lost and gone, as she lost and gone forever in tennis court. The only thing that I wanted so much to do is, wishing her the best after this. I hope that she's happy with the thing she do now. All the best...

Spoiled brat that thinks she deserves to win regardless of her effort. Seeing the aging Steffi beat her at the 99 French Open was beautiful beyond words!

She is easily the most intelligent player we have to date. When she plays she plays the game her way and tries to pick out her opponents weak spots. Even though she may not win EVERY grand slam she still plays the smaller tournaments to keep her in the top rankings and this is what other female players fail to do. The only thing that brings her down is her attitude she had too much too soon and didn't have the time to just look at the bigger picture and appreciate how lucky she actually was. I hope that as the years go by and she gets older she will learn to appreciate what she has and not take things for granted.

Boy, do I have mixed feelings about this one. But, I admire an athlete who does more with less. Martina Hingis does not have the most game on the women's tennis tour. Not even close. But, her game (not her personality, more on that later) makes her the Chris Evert of modern times. She adapts her game to exploit the weaknesses of her opponent. Same as Chrissie, I don't see her being #1 anymore, now that better athletes have risen to the top, but give her credit for staying at #1 for several years, and for almost never losing a match to someone she shouldn't lose to. Now, about that personality, I wish Martina would grow up. She doesn't lose very often, but when she does, it's time to roll out the excuses. Maybe I should take away some stars. Nope, I just love her game.

She walks around at Wimbledon with her nose four miles up in the air, plays like a sleepwalking hamster, and won't admit that she lost! Does she really expect me to believe that lame excuse that it was just not the right day for her? Face it, Martina, your game has gone down the tubes and if you ever expect me to give you any support, stop acting like a snob, practice your forehand/backhand/serve/game, and quit expecting matches to be handed to you on a silver platter! I would really like to like this girl, but she makes it comepletely impossible.

It is incredible that Martina Hingis has maintained a number 1 ranking. She has not won a major tournament in the past 2 years. She does have a wonderful all court game but she must add a little more power for that game to produce another major.

Martina has the best tennis brain in the women's game. She is cunning and can find ways to beat the harder hitters of the game (Williams sisters, Davanport, Seles). However, she will have to play extremely well to beat them all at a Grand Slam. It's not her fitness I'm questioning, it's her ability to kill off the powerhouses! Prime example was at the Oz open, she thought she had the hard work done by beating the Williams sisters but she lost to a player she had beaten in all their previous matches! Good luck Martina as I would hate to she her disappear completely! The game needs her!!

she's a great champion. She knows how to handle her game. But she doesn't have the physical prowess of titans such as the Williamses, Seles, and Davenport. I suggest that she should be more humble.

Martina Hingis, to me is a spolit brat who represents all the things that most people of the world are agianst. She is arrogant, a fascist, the list can go on. She has been computerised by her mother, who was a crap tennis player herself and then made martina fulfill her goals. As for her tennis, she only wins, when the best aint there. In 1997 she won 3 slams because steffi was injured, and the willaims sisters did not start. The french open 1999 demonstrates that steffi even though she was not in her prime beat hingis. The williams sisters if they started at 14, the way that hingis did would havbe killed her but they had other aims un life, [not roller blading. Hingis unlike her predoscessors does not show anything posive, and she has to remember one thing being number 1 only defines you as an athlete not as a human being.

I read a lot of the comments and I disagree. She is the best "BIG GAME" tennis player on tour. To get to the top you have to play with an attitude (nice guys/girls finish last). I say, keep the attitude and intimidate anyone on the other side of the net. Judge her play on the court, leave her interviews out of it!

As a tennis player, she is the best in the world. What makes her so great is her placement of the balls. She will never match the match the power hitters such as the williams sisters and Davenport but she makes up for a lack of power with one of the smartest games that I have ever seen. She is awesome to watch!

As far as tennis-playing ability, she gets five stars. As far as maturity and personality, she gets one star. I know it's hard to imagine how tough it would be to grow up in the spotlight like she has, and sure she's just a teenager, but often she seems more than just arrogant and bratty - she seems cruel and mean-spirited. And who knows how long her top-5 ranking will last. As the women's game moves towards players with more and more power (e.g., the Williams sisters, Davenport, etc.), I'm guessing that Hingis will have a hard time keeping up. If that happens, I, for one, will not be shedding any tears.

Hingis has unbelievable composure for her someone her age. Everything about her look, body language, and actions says in no certain terms, "This game is boring me, and I will beat you soon." You have to love her catty comments to the press as well...
