Umax Astra 2200 Summary: The scanner works great on startup. After that the Watcom DB interface locks up- reboot was necessary. I've used it on 2 computers and the same prob. The old computer was a Compaq 350mh w/ Win95. The new one, a Powerspec P4 w/ Win Me. USB- both. For 4 years, I've listened to similar complaints and lack of support. Seems the trouble was for me not the hardware but the software- so UMAX knew nothing- duh. NewSoft said it was CIH virus! But it was on the NewSoft site that I found the patch. Not the US site, which had bad links, but the French site. Do I read French? Ne Pas. The patch that I needed was PM-db.exe. (Others listed incl XP). I had to install several times until NewSoft message confirmed DB was repaired.

I have an Astra3400 that came with my computer that I purchased in late 1999. I do not know how other scanners work this the only one I have experience with, but it does what I wanted a scanner to do. I have a problem with a purpleish pink line about 1/4 inch wide that shows up on at least half of my scanned images. I have never been able to correct this. I just work around it. Other than that, this scanner makes very good quality images.

It's difficult to get a picture scanned straight. The scans also come out darker than the pictures. The software included is somewhat overbearing.

I actually have an older version of their scanner, the Vista S-6E. Umax does not stand behind their products. So now I have a 2 year old paperweight. They won't support their scanner with newer versions of Windows (I'm running Windows 2000 Professional). Avoid them like the plague.

One of the top 36 bit with maximum resolution. Umax has a 36 bit color with up to 2400 dpi and is also a scasi supper for faster scanning. It comes with many programs to help you scan.

The 1200 model is easy to set up and use. Has optional back lit cover to allow scanning of slides or x-rays.

I have seen other scanners that are great but mine is good enough to scan anything I want. It comes with good software. One can create albums, attach songs; it is supported by USB, which is another good thing. For the price, I've seen other scanners that can scan off of films. Mine doesn't. That is why it is only a 4!

Affordable but low on features and resolution. Nice one touch button though.

I personally have one. It scans very well and you can see the fine details afterwards. It is very quiet. It also comes with USB which is good.

They have a good product line. Plus, the 2200 has support for negatives and transparencies.

The UMAX scanners are fast at scanning images with USB. It has a low noise operation and comes with useful software to edit pictures.

It would be a five but its software program sucks. It hardly qualifies as an advanced technology. It may have been a powerful software 5 years ago but not now. The scanner itself is great and cheap.

I bought an Umax scanner (Astra). I have found that it was easy to install and the software packeged with it is great. I also like that I have an option to scan in just black and white instead of color, it is quicker.

I've had two scanners from UMAX. The scan quality keeps me commited to the brand. The parallel scanner is slower but is closer to scanning true color outputs. UMAX is inexpensive but is sufficient in quality. Good 'bang for your buck.'

I have purchased two UMAX's in the past year. One for my home and one for a friend. Both operate efficienty and provide good quality scans.

It has good quality scans. It's kind of slow. It has a great design, but for the price, you can't beat the deal.

The interface is very friendly and powerful. But the Umax Astra serial scanners always have some problems.

This scanner says it is a 36 bit scanner when it's actually a 24. And it's really slow because it's on a parallel port, and its scans are poor quality.

I have a Umax scanner and it works great. It can be used for color, black and white, or text. It has a variety of good features. I also use mine as a photocopy machine and that saves me trips to Kinkos.

Umax-the worst. They break down and give out the worst quality output. Cheap but you get what you pay for.

This scanner was a very good scanner. It looks good and works well. It is very user friendly. I used this scanner for about a year and I enjoyed working with it. It had a good scanning base and scanned clearly.

The Umax scanners have a reputation for quality. I own an Umax 600s scanner. It is a flat bed scanner that does it's job well. Despite the slow scans, even for black and white scans, it is reliable. I have had the scanner for about 4 years and it has yet to break down. The software is very basic, so for advanced users, buy better software. The scanner is easy to use! Turn on, place document in scanner and click on the scan button in the software. Too bad it is slow.

I love my scanner! It's worth the price and more! Great quality, good price easy to use and I recommend it to all my graphic design student friends.

Standard in scanners. Works great with Adobe and photoshop. It is a bit pricy, but not too bad.
