I cannot believe this instrument has yet to receive a single comment referencing Deliverence. Sorry folks. I don't care how masterful a banjo is played, all that I hear is "Squeal Pig"!

I have a banjo and can actually play two whole songs. I can also play the beginning of Deliverence. I lost my instructor several years ago and gave it up. If anyone wants a good used banjo I can let you have one cheap. The pain that you go through to get your fingers in shape for this is indescribable, plus you have to have your nails short and I didn't like that.

Too often used just for cheap, sonic effect, and very rarely played well. And don't give me that Bela Fleck nonsense... the only time a banjo is appropriate is in aunthentic Appalachian music.

I admit that initially I hated the sound of the banjo, until I heard Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. To hear banjo used outside of the country music innerspace was truly amazing. I have never thought the same about the banjo ever since then.

Killer instrument, especially when it's fingerpicked.

Banjo is a superb instrument when it comes to music for a good time. Steve Martin played it wonderfully and there was a movie "Oh brother where art thou" that did a wonderful job of utilizing the instrument to its full potential.

I was raised with banjos in the house, and the sound of one is as much a part of me as breathing! A big part of my heritage.

It's great for bluegrass, if you're into that kind of thing.

Frank, you disappoint me. Sure it is basically a guitar but it's got an interestingly resonant body. Good bluegrass with banjos can be like lightning! I think I need to get a banjo.

The banjo, I am not a very big fan of. The way it's played is similar to a guitar, but why would anyone want to play this one? It just sounds bad. Get a regular guitar instead!
