 | georges11 (16) 06/27/2008 | I think this job is for people who have it in their blood. Playing with fire is tricky business and I'd rather stay away from it and leave it to those brave souls who do it now.

 | GoinDownSlow (23) 08/29/2007 | The most underpaid, underappreciated job on the planet...well almost. That goes to anyone who works in a pediatric cancer or burn unit.

 | pugwash01 (15) 02/21/2007 | All Fire fighters are men and women that put their lives on the line, with no real thought of their own!!! I was a Fire Fighter in the British Navy and it was a very hard job, very demanding and it is the kind of job were you will need to have your wits about you!!!! Anyone that puts down any Fire Fighter needs a serious attitude change, purely because one day they may have to rescue your sorry a**. It might also be right in saying that most fires are caused by people doing stupid things and not being safe!!!!! I give them a 5 star rating, but they really need a much higher rating!!!!!

 | Donovan (129) 02/21/2007 | As a former firefighter from Florida, I can tell you this is not the glorified
job that some make it out to be. I have total respect for my brothers and
sisters in the Fire Service. It's a tough job and one that although most
appreciate receives a lot of flack from the people they serve. It is dangerous
and demanding. It plays on your mind and eats away at your livelihood. Firefighters’
do this because they desire to serve; they love the challenge and the camaraderie.

 | TB 303 (5) 08/20/2005 | A field of civil service that, especially after the attacks on 9/11, shows how willing these people are to put thier lives before others. Alot of fires are death traps, so everyday at work could be thier last. I know that I don't have the courage to do this in fear of burning to death or even receiving a 3rd degree burn so hats off to them all. As far as all the half naked guys on calenders goes and women magnets that some people think of them it's 99% of the time nothing like that at all. These are real heros and deserve the title.

 | Jamie McBain (44) 07/01/2004 | One of the most important jobs out there, someone has to put out fires and rescue people. Just think of what could happen if there where no more fire fighters.

 | Redoedo (39) 03/09/2003 | These men and women are truly unselfish, brave persons. Like most public servants, they are very underpaid, but this fact that does not stop them from doing their job. For the rest of my life I will always advocate that these men and women are more properly compensated. Their bravery on 9/11 was truly selfless and brave, and these men and women should be much more appreciated for their efforts to save lives throughout this nation.

 | Snoopy (3) 02/12/2003 | I can't believe that fireman and police officer aren't tied for #1! These fine men and women put their lives at risk every day to help people and save lives. To all the unselfish police officers and firefighters out there: thank you very much!

 | BIGBABY (10) 02/07/2003 | Running down halls on fire, risking your life, wearing goofy clothes... its defintely not a job for me. But I give tham credit for saving lives, putting out fires and, of course, 9-11.

 | Aurielle (18) 11/19/2002 | I was shocked to see that this occupation is lower on the list than ambassador and musician. I mean, come on. I'm not a firefighter myself, but I have a lot of friends who are and I couldn't point out anyone more selfless and caring than these guys. They're always willing to invite strangers into their "home", always willing to make weekend repairs or help remodel a bathroom, and most of all, always willing to risk their lives to save another soul. You can't call these guys heroes without them getting flustered and embarassed, but their humility makes them even more endearing. It seems that our culture just wants to recognize those who make the most money. That's just the way we are. But these guys should be at the top of the list just for what they go through every day. Does an ambassador run into a burning building? Does a musician scale a building to rescue construction workers from a scaffolding collapse? These guys don't just deserve more money, they deserve our whole-hearted respect!

 | Teaseress (13) 11/13/2002 | They are the most brave, fearless, unselfish people. I watched the documentary that the two French brothers did that got shown on the first anniversary of 9/11 and I couldn't help but cry. It was devestating when the news broke out - the whole of Britain was in shock and our hearts go out to every single person involved. Especially the firefighters.
Our firefighters are protesting about their pay at the moment and I back them 100% God bless.

 | r_mitchell (0) 09/10/2002 | A firefighter is an extremely noble occupation, but lowering the bar for women to get in is stupid. We are mixing political correctness with the real world. What firefighters do is survive in conditions that can become extremely dangerous. It takes a certain level of physical attribute to be able to handle these conditions. Therefore lowering the standard for a certain group is insane. Firefighting isn't about man or woman. It's about a person able to do their job effectively. 5 rating for occupation but brought down to a 4 for the politics getting involved.

 | CastleBee (81) 10/26/2001 | Even before the 9/11 attacks I have always thought firemen deserved way more money than whatever they were paid. Since that time and forevermore I will always have a very soft spot in my heart for them and the risks they take. The events of that day and the massive news coverage gave the nation and parts of the entire world a large-scale view of the kind of danger they face on a daily basis.

 | magellan (153) 09/11/2001 | There are more than 300 firemen missing from the World Trade Center disaster - including the fire chief and the deputy fire chief. These people threw themselves into an impossible, unimaginable situation in order to try and save the lives of fellow New Yorkers. The sheer numbers of those missing tells me that these particular firemen were heros - from their chief on down. As Mayor Giuliani put it, "They're the guys running in, when everyone else is running out." God bless their souls.

 | alicat (3) 01/04/2001 | I personally don't have it in me to be a fireman but there is something about firemen that I love. It isn't like I am that girl who likes men in uniforms or anything but I just love firemen. I think they are so strong, and heroic. They know how to handle not only fires but other emergencies too. It must be so fulfilling to not only solve small problems but life threatning situations as well. Always on their toes, firemen are great.
