"Marie" is a song from Newman's 1974 album "Good Old Boys". A man is singing to his wife Marie about his love for her. It is a beautiful song; Judy Collins, for one, has performed it in concert. Why is it also sad? The singer admits that he's drunk and that's the only way he could express himself to her. He admits, at length, his shortcomings. "I'm weak and I'm lazy/And I've hurt you so/And I don't listen to a word you say/When you're in trouble I just turn away/But I loved you the first time I saw you/And I always will love you Marie" It is clear that this marriage has been through shaky times. But it is also clear that the husband, however flawed, is sincere in what he says.
