This is an incredible book. It is a journey through the life and times of the Buendía family. This was revolutionary in setting forth the path for the realismo magico (magical realism) genre that has followed. There is extreme symbolism, both in the names of the characters and in the events that occur. I read it in it's original Spanish before in Enlgish, I reccomend it either way. It is a must-read.

This is a book that should be read, but it's not easy to do so. It is Latin American surrealism at its finest, and can get rather confusing and hard to keep track of at times. Yet it's worth reading because you're left with an overall sense of the history of Latin American towns and their changes.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is an incredible author that twists fantasy and reality into a passionate tale of the trials and tribulation of family life. One Hundred Years of Solitude cannot be put down once begun, and brings out the complete range of emotions possible. A great example of Latin American literature! Also, check out Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Love In The Time of Cholera!

This novel is without a doubt my favorite that I've read in a long while. From the very first sentence the reader plunges into a world of magic that is as funny as it is disturbingly familiar. One finds characters so outragous that he can't help but laugh and characters, so human he can't put the book down.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" is a book filled with fantasical adventures that border on the line of dreams and reality. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel the sensuality and lustre of Latin America, where beautiful girls disappear and ghosts weep under trees. Marquez is spell-binding. I do have one caution: red it only if you're ready to lose yourself in Marquez world and forget yours completely.

The best novel I have ever read. I believe more people need to read it. I think Garcia Marquez is the best writer in the world and I would be interested in any information on him.

Amazing! Just amazing! Couldn't put the book down. Garcia capivates you from the first sentance of the book until the last, introducing you to 3 generations of a family who has watched the world go in circles and time come to the same place it has begun!

Beautifully written. Marquez's style says so much in so few words. Definitely a good read.

The most beautiful book I have ever read. The realist imagery is amazing. The book follows the creation, devastation, rebuilding, and finally the obliteration of a town, a community and a family. The people seem so real and the ghosts come alive on the page.

Very very long...lots of similar names, no interesting climax. What was the point of the book (not very memorable).

The only other book besides the Bible that everyone should be required to read. Tells the story of a family through generations. Marquez does not try to be gentle, and so you get a feeling of reality that comes from the "saying what others will not."

Amazing book. I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He has such a crazy imagination- the forgetting disease, etc. His idea of reality has no boundaries; people live forever.

Beautifully written, hauntingly tragic, yet heartwarming. I love the mixture of myth, romance, drama, and humor, and was pulled so far into the novel that I lost sleep over it. This was my second reading, and I would read it again!

One of my all-time favorites! Marquez is a phenomenal writer. The author pieces together the story wonderfully- the language and the plot are both superb. I couldn't put this book down.

I'm only 1/2 way through this novel, but it's a very engrossing book. I've read "Mama Grande" and "A Death Foretold" by him also. Marquez is amazing in both Spanish and English.

100 years of solitude represents one of the most effective works of surrealism

Way too much detail. I felt like it took me a hundred years to get through it.

Like all other Garcia Marquez' masterpieces this is a very complete novel. It is a great realistic love story, beautifully narrated. It also gives the reader a good feel for the historical period in which the story takes place.

This book tells a coded history of a troubled country; it ennobles and gives substance to Colombia's people even while focusing on the country's squalor and tortured past. It's a rare book; of current Latin American writers, perhaps only Carlos Fuentes achieves a similar effect.
