Much better than its sequel. Good costumes and settings for the time, a simple, but rather good plot, and I love the opening speech by Mako, who is probably best known for providing the voice of the demonic villain on the contemporary cartoon Samurai Jack. Good stuff, and a decent performance by James Earl Jones as the bad guy in this.

Wow! What an adventure! This movie pretty much sums up life. Conan is every man's hero, and every woman's fantasy- which a few lucky ones fulfill. Barbarians, wizards, death, sex, epic battles, and cannabolism. What more could you ask for in a movie! A must see for anyone and everyone. Show the whole family!

The legendary warrior Conan (Schwarzenegger) begins his epic quest when Conans mother was killed in front of him by Thulsa Doom, then he is sold for slavery. He gets very huge and angry as he pushes the wheel of pain, at this point he is pissed off at CRUM his god. he finally gets released into the wild (bad idea) as he takes over the land and seeks revenge of the death of his mother, and to have his own kingdom with sex slaves. he gets laid quite a few times along the journey and he only eats meat!!! He meets up with Valeria who is also a great warrior but i'd like to think that he just kept her around for a peice of ass. He kills a horny witch along the way (erotic), gets crucified, sneaks into a chamber and kills all the guard and servants, and finally he meets up with Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones, Darth Vader) and chops off his head in front of all his people then throws it off the altar. Conan finally avenges the death of his mother and his people. He then goes on to rule his own... Read more

Interspersed with a few good moments (Arnold's answer to what is best in life is priceless), yet I always wanted more from this movie. The Governor of California was a no-brainer for the hero, but I pictured him in a darker, more-savage storyline. A well-known crowd pleaser robbed of its thunder by a dippy sequel.

Maybe the best Schwarzenegger film. It gave us all that great line we can use now when asked what is our purpose. - To crush the enemy, to see them driven before me, to hear the lamentations of their women. Lamentations, too classic.

I rather like this. It isn't overly pretentious, unlike a lot of sci-fi/fantasy. It's reasonably well made, and it's kind of fun. It doesn't pretend to be more than it is, and it has some surprisingly good performances in it.

When this first came out I loved it. My tastes have changed, but I still enjoy it on a different level. After seeing Arnold become a more solid actor, it's a little weird to go back and see him in this movie. Also, there are some cruel overtones, like Snake worshipping and human sacrifice.

I was a big fan of Conan as a kid. I was a big comic book collector and Conan was my favorite. The movie on the other hand wasn't as good as the comic. They tried to make it true to the series, but somewhere it seemed too Hollywood and not enough heart as the character.

A manly warrior movie. A lot of sex and violence. NOT a chick flick unless she likes to watch.

Arnold dominates with a big, badass sword. There is an NFL hero in it as well as James Earl Jones.

Based on the character created by R.E. Howard, this is one of the best swords-and-sorcery movies ever made, and a great role for Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie successfully evokes an ancient, iron-age atmosphere of decadent city-states and noble savages (like the titular character). The movie proceeds episodically, with occasional lulls, but contains many memorable scenes and an excellent score. James Earl Jones is great as the evil high-priest of Set, Thulsa Doom. In addition to the obvious emphasis on bloody swordplay, the movie explores a number of themes, such as the differences in religious attitudes between civilized men and barbarians, and the nature of power. Conan himself is a likeable character, violent and lusty to be sure, but also quick to make friends and posessed of a sense of humour. All in all, an entertaining and enjoyable movie. Followed by a vastly inferior sequel, "Conan the Destroyer", and numerous imitations.
