oh yes this one can be scary. but mostly unsettling. a young girl is feared to be possessed by a demon. they seek an exorcist when medical testing shows nothing. some scenes are very difficult to watch to this day. had a lot of hype and warning when this first came out in the mid 70s. good movie and good actors. just not easy to watch.

Now this is a classic of its genre. Excellent directing and performance, the story is frightening and certainly impressing. The prospect of anyone being a potential victim of the possession by the devil himself is long lasting in the memory of the viewer. stories of ugly nightmares and fake possessions were abundant after the release. Overall, a masterpiece of horror.

The devil did not want the soul of little Regan McNeil. It wanted the soul of the younger priest who was having trouble with his faith!!!It used the girl as a pawn to get to the priest.

The scene that stuck in my mind for years was seemingly one of the most innocuous at first. It was when the old homeless guy asked Father Karras, ' Can you spare an old altar boy a quarter Father ?' Later on, as we know, the demon inside Regan Mcneil taunted him by showing that it knew what was in his mind. The demonic voice, spinning head etc made little impression on me but I have to admit that scene chilled me to the bone. The subtlety of evil, one might say. People dimiss such things too easily for want of better special effects, acting or whatever. Carla Moran knows better. If she's still alive today I hope she's free of it.

why?

why was a there masturbation scene included in the film involving a Crucifix and a little girl? and the gore and blood in that scene from her private area and the language having to do with sexual references against Christ Jesus God.

Jesus The Christ spoke of satan and demons. Of course they are real (they exist) and are real enemies of God. But what does this movie have to do with what Jesus Christ taught about His enemies in the spiritual realm? does this movie match Christ's WORD about His enemies or was it a shock movie out to $$cash$$ in?

Who is William Peter Blatty? What was his motivation? To get those outside of Christ closer to His Eternal Love, Grace, and Mercy?
Or was it a clever scheme to $cash$ in?

The movie is the worst film ever made.

Yet this movie shows a gore pornographic scene of a little girl masturbating to a crucifix getting utterly blooding while chanting curse sex language about having sexual relations with God Himself.

Can't honestly say I've yet concluded whether this is a good movie where motion picture standards are involved or merely schlock with quality production values from director William Friedkin. All I am willing to acknowledge is that, along with Jack Clayton's 'The Innocents' (a legitimate classic) 'The Exorcist,' unlike most other such experiences, is one of the few that remains still in my subconscious the most.

Only movie I ever saw that actually scared me. If horror movies are supposed to "horrify"....this one is the best ever. A definite 5.

The voices send a chill up and down your spine. The power of the Devil is always a great movie theme.

Timeless. Weak compared to modern extreme slasher films, but in a way better. You get more psychological complex plots that appeal to more intelligent people rather than crazy sadists. A great for Halloween

This classic didn't scare me, but it was very disturbing, even for today's standards. A nightmarish film about a young girl who gets posessed by the devil...the first of its kind. This is easily one of the top 5 horror films ever made. The make up effects they used on Blair are extremely effective. They make her look absolutely grotesque and terrifying. If any horror movie is worth 5 stars, it's this one.

When it first came out,it caused a real media hype ruckus with folks fainting and vomiting in the theater,etc.By todays standards it seems pretty tame.When I first saw it in a Manhattan Theater with my teenage friends,we found it pretty comical.Oh well,most of the people in the balcony were laughing along with us.The people down below were scared,though...Guess it was all a matter of "Perspective" !

This is the scariest movie ever. Most people confuse being "terrified" with being "startled" --true terror is harder to accomplish while it is easy to startle someone with a sudden blast of music or something jumping out at you. The Exorcist made you think and there are subtle points in the movie that still haunt me years later. Two of the most terrifying scenes in the movie: Father Karras is in the room with "it" and hears a familiar voice say "can ya spare a quarter for an old altar boy father?" --it was the voice in the subway at the beginning of the movie when Karras was about to board the train. The other scene is when Karras enters the room and seems HIS DEAD MOTHER sitting there on the bed staring at him in the brightly lit room. Come on!!! No scene in Halloween comes even close to that stuff!!! The rest of the movies on this list are relatively simple-minded!

I can't even watch a scene from this movie. I saw a still photo from it and it freaked me right out. I guess it's mostly scary because it's real. I mean, not the movie, but the motive. The reality of the situation is that demonic possesion is real, and has happened before. It's not like those ghost movies, where there's no evidence that they exist. It's real, and I guess that's what freaks me out the most.

It was extreemly scarey, and the main reason behind it is that there is no soundtrack. It was banned in my country for quite a while (years)!. but still it scares me .

I am not much for this series, the first one was by far the best. But to me, that is not saying alot.

The greatness of the film, for me, is demonstrated by the fact that I'm not religious, I find the premise absurd (John Landis made the comment, and I paraphrase, 12-year old girl gets possessed by the devil and goes to pedophile priests for assistance?), and yet I still love it. Stars the great Ellen Burstyn and Max Von Sydow and even non-actor (playwright) Jason Miller is effective. Greatest of all, of course, is the make-up by Dick Smith. Despite all the advances in make-up and special effects that have been made in the years since 1973, this creation has never been matched in terms of sheer, chilling creepiness. This is the kind of no-holds barred movie they just don't make anymore, unfortunately. Can you imagine anyone putting a scene like the one with Linda Blair and the crucifix in a film today? Put this one up against the pitiful pseudo-Exorcist movie that came out last year, and you'll see how markedly the state of moviemaking has deteriorated over the past 20-30 years.

This movie freaked me out. Linda Blair did an amazing job, no wonder she had to go into therapy after that. The effects are very good considering that movie is from the 70's. I was disgusted at times, but I think this movies is one of the best movies of that decade. If you don't like horror movies, you might want to skip this one cause this one will freak your freak

In my opinion, the best horror movie ever made. At the time - great shock value, today - overall great atmosphere and as creepy as they come. The book is a fascinating read, too.
