The only true Superman, or Superman movie. No one will ever top what they did in this film for Superman with his character, as well as Lex, Clark Kent, Lois, the Daily Planet, and the whole premise of Superman.

A cheap and bad imitation of God, I don't like it.

While he is probably the standard barer for the genre and the template upon which the rest are built, he has to be the dullest of the bunch. No inner turmoil, moral dilemna, stunningly hot nemisis in a tight costume distracting him from the job at hand. And as a film and television franchise he has wrought a handful of pretty uninspired vehicles, the worst of which was the Christopher Reeeve series. Admittedly I haven't bothered to look at the latest flick. Maybe this boring superhero is finally worth following.

The big blue boyscout. Boring. What can hurt him? Kraptonite. Who has it? Everyone he faces. Yawn.

Have to agree with FranksWildYears,he's just not very compelling.I liked the TV series when I was 7 or 8,but even then I thought it was stupid that his only "disguise" in his true identity was a pair of glasses !

Superman comics are fun, but the problem with Superman is that he doesn't have many "good" enemies like Batman does, the majority of them are silly.

I've gotta give him a 5 because he is almost perfect. he has numerous powers while most heros are limited to one. he is also one of the few heros who doens't have to wear a mask to be in disguise. if not for that one weakness he would be indistructable.

He's pretty much got it all. I'm not a big fan, but he is pretty bad ass when you get down to it. His only weakness is Kryptonite. And you can't really get that at the cornor drug store.

In my mind superman is by far the greates of all superheroes not just because of his powers but because he stood for "Truth,  Justice And The American Way". I still believe in America and Americanism; it's the leadership that I have a problem with.

Growing up with the superman cartoons, comic books, and the television show, I was pleased with the overall tone of this movie. Chris Reeve was the perfect choice for the part and Hackman and Beatty are great together. I didn't care too much for the sequels though.

A long awaited motion picture based on the popular comic book character, this first release was well done and received. It has conquered and fascinated a whole generation of movie goers who were itching to see their favorite character "live". A good movie and now, a classic.

Superman is great and although he is still fiction, Krypotonite has been discovered. A mineral found by geologists in Serbia shares virtually the same chemical composition as the fictional kryptonite from outer space, used by the Superman's nemesis Lex Luther to weaken him. Dr Chris Stanley, a mineralogist at London's Natural History Museum revealed the identity of the mysterious new mineral; he discovered the match after searching the Internet for its chemical formula - sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide. "I was amazed to discover that same scientific name written on a case of rock containing Kryptonite stolen by Lex Luther from a museum in the film Superman Returns," Stanley said. The mineral, to be named Jadarite is a white, powdery substance which contains no fluorine and is non-radioactive instead of the large green crystals in Superman comics.

Once again, no, this movie isn't perfect, but I enjoyed it too much not to give it a 5. A total classic. Watching this film made life all the better when I was a kid.

Too super and kryptonite is a boring "nemisis"/weakness. Fun for small children, but fairly dull once one is past 8 or 9.

It's really dull for the most part. The only thing that I like about it is the portrayal of Luthor by Hackman, who went against type by playing Lex Luthor as more of a smarmy wiseass than a diabolical genius. Not the worst superhero flick, but not the best either. I heard Brando was paid for this in Twinkies.

Good Super Hero, but how stupid are the people in this town that they can't tell CLark Kent is SuperMan. Lois Lane is the dumbest human being in the history of stupidity. Superman's secret diguise is a set of eye glasses. Hell I could be Superman with the idiots in the town supermans in.

I never understood Superman. He was just that to me, super, beyond human mortality and human struggles. What interest do I have with someone when they are not human and do not have human struggles. How do I relate and connect with said character. I can't and that makes said character flat and boring. Clark only seemed to struggle with romance but that was fixed in time. He just wasn't human and therefore unrelatable.

IMO Superman the character feeds into the all-American hunger for infantile, incessant hero-worship. Like Batman, the character's been over-hyped and done to death esp within recent U.S. pop culture. Can understand young kids getting into him but not adults, as there's no real layers, depth, development or complexities to the character or his story. Kryptonite this.

Christopher Reeve is the BEST SUPERMAN EVER! The ONLY person who really gave life to the character and made us believe that a man can fly.

The first superhero and his only competition for most popular or recoginizable would be Batman and Spiderman. Unfortunately his comics have often been pretty lousy. Reminds me of what Bill Veeck said about baseball, It's great game, it has to be to have survived what we've done to it, Superman's a great comic hero he has to be to have survived what's been done to him by his writers over the years.

I find Superman quite...uh...super. As superheroes goes, he is the king. His multimedia presence, DC Comics, TV, Movies (I only cared for Superman 2, which was epic (I lift weights -- what a line)), even music (the Kinks, not that weepy whiney song some dude sings), makes him the superhero. If Mel Kiper (the NFL draft guy) were here, he would say that Superman has no weaknesses -- all upside!!! As a student od science, I always wondered 2 things: 1) How does Superman fly without moving his body (does he fart a jet stream) 2) Krypton is an inert gas on earth. So how in the world do we get the compound Kryptonite.

Take away his weakness to kryptonite, and Superman is basically indestructible. Plus, he's equipped with almost every single geneirc superpower that you can think off. Unless you have some of the green rock, you're screwed if you mess with him.

Superman has never been very interesting. Even his origin is boring. He just one day decides to fight crime, nothing motivates him to do so. With Batman you can understand since he saw his parents murdered in from of him when he was only eight years old. And Spiderman could have easily apprehended his uncle's killer before anyone died but didn't do anything because it wasn't his responsibility. The pain of losing loved ones motivated them to prevent others from suffering. But back to Superman who just seems to get weaker over time. Back in the beginning he could knock planets out of orbit but now he has trouble lifting mountains. People think he's invincible but kryptonite and magic can kill him. He's not immortal. If you read the Dark Knight Returns you'll see a fifty year old Batman beats the crap out of Superman with a power suit and synthetic kryptonite. It's a good book and I highly recommend it.

Released in 1978, Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie is probably the best of the comics to silver screen films, and the one that seemed to have started that movement. The key to the sucess of the film was the casting, starting with the then unknown Christopher Reeve as the adult Clark Kent and Superman. Reeve seemed to satisfy all generations, namely those who grew up with prior actors in the role as well as the younger generations to whom Reeve is Superman. In addition, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Ned Beatty as Luther's incompetent sidekick Otis, Glenn Ford as Superman's human father Jonathan Kent, and Jackie Cooper as the Daily Planet's editor Perry White were all spot on. The only casting failure is Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, as Kidder was just too hard edged for the role in my opinion. The screenwriters do a excellent job giving appropriate time to the three main phases of the film, namely on Krypton, Superman's youth, and the main action scenes as ... Read more

My personal favorite superhero. Superman has been around for so many years and the story of Ka-El, son of Jor-El, orphan from the doomed planet Krypton never gets old. The powers Superman possess are among the best- invincibility, super strength, able to fly, x-ray vision, heat vision, able to fly, super breath, super hearing. But despite all that he's still vulnerable. What makes Superman great, through all the interpretations through out his long history is his alter ego Clark Kent. For I don't see Superman as an alien. I see him as a man who just happened to have been born on another planet. As with any great superhero myth this one deals superbly with the dual personality. To me the greatness and real strength in Superman comes from Clark Kent.

Superman is basically a superstrong boy scout. There's just something really grating about his earnestness and politeness, and the way he can vow to fight for "truth, justice, and the American way" with a straight face. Despite his incredible powers, he manages to be quite a pansy. All the other superheroes have little foibles and human weaknesses, but Superman is annoyingly perfect, like nothing bad ever happened to him in his life. Also, how does he shave or keep his hair trim, since nothing damages his hair. It also must have been hard to learn how to avoid killing people when giving them a pat on the back or something.

A four-year-old child could whip Superman. All he needs is a hunk of glowing rock and Sup's done.
