I saw this in the artsy theater. It was depressing. I don't like prison, concentration camp or POW camp flicks with the exception of "Stalag 17." I give this a three to be on the side of political correctness.

What a fantastic film! It made me love, it made me angry, it made me cry.

Questo era uno dei miei film preferiti. Non c'era mai un film che dipingeva l'olocausto in modo cosi' tangibile. Allo stesso momento si capisce che non e' un film sull'olocauso, ma invece e' un film che si tratta della vita. Atteggiamento riflette tutto. Che bellezza, lo voglio vedere di nuovo.

I love Roberto Benigni! I think he is so funny. I am sure some people find him too hyperactive but I do not mind. It might take a few minutes to get use to his style. The plot: A Jewish man falls for a beautiful woman Nicoletta Braschi using his humour he captures her heart, the heart of his son, and the movie viewer. You truly see how the power of love and hope exists during the most trying of conditions in Nazi concentration camps. It is a movie that will stay with you. If you like Roberto Benigni.. I also liked the movie Johnny Stecchino.

Terribly over-rated and terribly over-acted!

One of the few foreign movies I have seen only. I hate having to try and follow the actions in the movie and read the subtitles. Other than that, this was a great movie. I really enjoyed it in both the drama and the history.

I've never really liked having to read my movie as I'm watching it -- in other words, following subtitles. But this movie was different, somehow. The father worked so hard to protect his son from the horrors of war and of genocide, to keep his son's innocence and love (and possibly trust) for humanity. Some parts were so funny that it was almost painful to laugh, because they also made me cry; I was basically laughing through my tears. The film was heartbreaking, true, but it was uplifting and beautiful, especially the end. After watching this movie, I was trembling from head to toe and didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Amazing movie!

Worst movie I've ever seen...... the kid would have figured out that something was up..... It was not worth the time

Life is Beautiful is a very well done film and deals with the very difficult topic of Hitler's genocide attempt upon the Jews. It was made with wisdom. It portrayed believable characters and effectively showed the love of a father for his son. I am amazed at how well this was done with the juxtapostition of being humorous in the darkest of situations. A great movie that touches the heart!

This would be my number one reason for learning Italian, to fully understand every single word that comes from his (Robert's) mouth. Not many movies will make me cry, but this one did, I cant make me cry anymore, after seeing it 25 plus times, but I'm equally moved every time. Its fair to divided the movie into 2 chapters, The first one, is Guido (Roberto ) winning his love. The second "chapter" is about Roberto trying to protect his son from the horror of WW2. But much more, this is a tale about life, about love. Roberto is simply irresistible. His appetite for life is astonishing, breathtaking, the overall acting of all the characters are superb, and the music melt in. Maybe not the greatest movie ever, but darn close! 5 stars of 5.

A wonderful movie. It really has two plots in one. Roberto Benigni{sp?} is terrific as a jewish man who in the first half of the movie fall in love and pursues the woman of dreams. The tactics he takes to win her over are funny and romantic. Coming in to her classroom pretending to be an inspector, following her to the theater and taking her for a ride. etc. Meanwhile the horror of the Holocaust is closing in on them and getting worse. The second half of the movie is when they are married and have an adorable five year old boy. Robertos character and his wife and son are taken to the concentration camp. The boy and dad are together. To keep Joshua from the horrors of what is really going on he invents a game for the boy to win a tank. This movie has some comedy. but it is shows the sacrifice the dad makes for his boy to get him through this horrific experience.

This is the most overrated foreign film ever. The moral of the story seems to be this: If something bad is happening, lie about it, make life into a game, and you'll be a hero. This is, by far, the most dishonest depiction of the holocaust that I have ever seen.
francis 02/19/2001
No, what say the title or name. Well, this movie is as: lat us make the things better, with a smile, with a resultq: human being respectfullity for us Mother Earth. Let us Life: that's so beautiful or not? Franscis

What I cannot believe is that this is just getting rated. This excellent film has been out now for over 2 years. As a father you should see this film and all of its passion that Roberto Bernini has put into it. You can even see a rarity on film a man and his real life wife acting together and just as passionate as off the silver screen. This film will make you cry and that is that (provided you have a heart).

This is a movie I liked less and less the more I thought about it. I did get caught up in it whiile watching it. Not as good as I had heard, but effective. Walking to the car afterward, however, something was bothering me. On the Twenty minute drive home I started to have more and more trouble with it. By the time I pulled up in front of the house I had decided I really didn't like Life is Beautiful. It's a manipulative movie. And, yes of course, all movies are manipulative, but this was almost shamelessly so. The central message, that the human spirit can soar even in the midst of unspeakable horror, is powerful one. But living with that horror, it's daily fear and degradation and it's victims response to it, must be rendered with brutal honesty in order for that message to be effective. The fanciful, slightly fantastic, light tone this movie took rendered the argument ineffective. There was just too much that pushed plausability (i.e.little boys do not get on loud speakers in Nazi concentration camps and live to talk about it). Then in the thick of all this lightheartedness an emotionally packed image like the hundreds of stacked corpses is inserted to give the movie gravitas. Images like that must be earned by a film and Life is Beautiful, quite frankly, didn't earn it. To exploit its power by simply sticking it in between scenes of Roberto Bernigni's silly clown routine, is the crassest of manipulations. It verges on insult to the very memory it attempts to invoke.

This is one of the finest movies I have ever seen. Set around the most horific tragedy in history, it is a love story first between a man and a woman, and then between the man and his son. So many scenes tug at your heart while you're also laughing. With sub-titles, it may difficult to follow on the small screen, but is definitely worth the effort.
Shroomwoman 12/11/2000
I broke two of my movie rules (no subtitles/no movies about the Holocaust) in order to see "Life Is Beautiful," and I'm really glad I did. It's a phenomenal film! The show is about a man who tries to make life bearable for his young son after they've been sent to a concentration camp. Though the show is extremely sad in many ways, it's also incredibly uplifting, heartwarming, and even hilarious at times. The acting is superb across the board, and Roberto Benigni shines in his Oscar-winning performance. If you're avoiding the movie because of subtitles, don't let that keep you from seeing it. I was so drawn in from the very start, I didn't even realize I was reading them. As someone who has tried twice to make it through "Schindler's List" and failed, I can also guarantee you that the portrayal of the Holocaust is not too graphic. "Life Is Beautiful" is a movie that you must see!

Funny, engaging, a well done job of bringing you up and then bringing you down right when you're starting to feel pretty good and everything is right with the world. Interesting story and well acted but I think it just slips outside the PoorOldEdgarDerby top ten foreign list. Sorry Benini (sp?).

I saw this in the cinema and could not leave my seat for a while. All I could do was try to get over my sobbing, and all I could say was, "Wow. That was the best movie I've seen in a long time." People say that it took the holocaust and made light of it. I disagree. I think it was a film about love--not rjust romantic love--the greater sense of the word. It was about how love can endure in even the most horrific situations.
Ruby 06/22/2000
This is the most fantastic movie I've seen in a long, long time. It's got a few laugh out loud parts, and an incredible tearful ending, and its interesting the whole way throuhg. I can't recommend a movie more strongly.
Wiggum 06/04/2000
I’m definitely not a big fan of foreign cinema, but “Life is Beautiful” is something special. This is one of those rare movies that’s almost perfectly put together – every single scene is an integral part of the overall movie. The story is incredibly moving. And Roberto Benigni's performance was truly worthy of the Oscar he won – it’s impossible not to get attached to his character Guido, a father who relies on his amazing imagination to prevent his son from suffering while they are prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp. Who would have thought someone could make a funny movie about the Holocaust, while never once detracting from the seriousness of the tragedy?
magellan 05/16/2000
Outstanding. With the wrong director and/or the wrong actors, this movie could have been an absolute disgrace. Part of this movie's genius was the sophistication and wit with which it handled such delicate subject matter.

This movie has a fresh and innovative approach to telling the story of the holocaust and the people it affected. The humor is excellent and also plays as a social metaphor in many instances. After pondering on the movie a few days, I could not help but feel that although I initially also participated in the illusion created by the father, that the whole movie itself, is also an illusion and just as unreal and impossible as the illusion portrayed in it.

Forget Schindler's List: This is MUCH better! Best film of '98! Best non-English film ever! :o) PS: Do anyone know why La vita è bella wasn't nominated for one single Golden Globe, when it was nominated for seven Oscars & won three?!?
Red Red Rose 12/12/1999
In general, I had a very tough time separating from the tragedy of the Holocaust enough to enjoy the humor of this film. There were scenes, however, like the banquest where the uninvited hero leaves with the heroine on a green horse that were absolutely wonderful.
