I can thank Thor, Odin, and all the other holy gods that I never finished watching this movie. I went with Martha, faked being sick, and spent most of the time outside the screening room waiting for this thing to end. I have avoided it since and I am a better man for it.

As a professional mathematician, I can appreciate the appearance of the mathematical prodigy Will Hunting in the most unusual of places. Mathematics is one area where prodigies appear so that aspect of the story is plausible. Hunting is working as a janitor at MIT when he rather casually solves a difficult math problem that Professor Gerald Lambeau has posed to his students. Will's past has been a difficult one, as a youth he bounced from foster home to foster home and was abused. He has had several run-ins with the law and so it appears that his mathematical talent will remain untapped. Robin Williams plays a rather unusual psychology professor named Sean Maguire and turned in the best performance in the movie. Despite early setbacks in the counseling relationship between Will and Maguire, Will is able to come to grips with his prodigious talents and troubled past and embarks on what is hopefully a brilliant career. The movie is also about the role of friendship, Ben Affleck plays ... Read more

I wont explain the whole story here as many others have done so already. But I will say that I think it's incredible how the two best friends in this movie, and the two best friends in real life wrote the script for this movie! It's a very good story with great acting, particularly by Robin Williams who needs just as much credit for his acting ability as he has for his comedic sense. This is one of my favorite movies and I recommend it whole heartedly! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might relate to it, and even though you're not a New Yorker, you'll start saying "how do you like them apples?".

If its the reviw of the film, I think is very good exept for the sexual relationship that shows, really it's not need to bring the message forward.

Just got the DVD as a gift. . .it has aged rather well. Still a terrific movie. It's so good that Ben Affleck doesn't suck.

i touched on this before, but i just dont like this film. it has nothing to do w/the principal stars/writers of the film (although i do have an aversion to Ben Affleck; Damon is decent when he wants to be). my problems stem from this film running over two hours on every single cliched plot point ever created: 1) the un-noticed genius 2)the tortured orphan no one loves 3)the benevolent father figure who has undergone his own torturous past 4)the love interest who first the main character gets but then rejects b/c his pain is too deep 5)the good ole pals from the neighborhood meant to keep our hero grounded and real 6) the best friend who realizes the hero is special before even he does. ugh. it feels to me like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck sat with a how to make films book by their side while writing this movie. but i do understand how it got made. Kevin Smith, witty hollywood genius a the time produced the film, and Damon and Affleck were two actors, despite their protestions, on the cus... Read more

What was the fuss about? Gotta give Matt Damon and Ben Affleck credit--the took Dead Poets Society (and even borrowed that movie's leading actor), merged it with Ordinary People, and came up with the most overrated film of 1997 (and that includes L.A. Confidential!)

My all-time least favorite movie. Took me 4 times to get to the end. Wish I would have never started watching this piece of trash....

This film was simply brilliant. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote this story when they were struggling young actors and wanted to break into the industry and they wrote a simple story set in their hometown of Boston and some of the main characters based on their Irish-American roots. People who accussed this story of being too simple overlooked what makes a great film which is the heart and soul of characters, a well written script and intelligent dialogue that seems to be lacking in many films today. That monologue that the Professor delivered to Will at the lake was one of the most gripping, moving and emotional speeches I've ever heard on film and that alone made this movie stand out.

Basic simple plot: Pathetic janitor gets recognized because (GASP) he knows what 1 + 1 is! So in comes Professor (Robin Willaims) who goes insane when Mr. Dumb Custodian (Matt Damon) makes fun of his wife. Dumb custodian sees beautiful girl (Minnie Driver) and he leaves her. Dumb custodian breaks down and cries on the shoulder of homely professor.

Excellent concept spoiled, I think, by some poor casting. If only Robin Williams could have come across as he did in Awakenings - his angst ridden physchiatrist was totally unbelievable - as was Minnie Driver (no chemistry whatsoever) - how she lands these roles absolutely beats me!

I honestly could not understand the hype over this movie. It wasn't all that original and Robin Williams cannot pull off drama. While the idea of the movie has potential, I did not feel any true inspiration from the script nor did I feel any true relation to the characters. Something about the characters and dialogue as it was written seemed so forced and unnatural.

See, here's a movie for which Matt Damon can be fairly judged because of his excelent acting. One of the best movies of all time. Robin Williams is such an inspiration. Damon was at his best!

I really hated this movie. I thought it was really really boring, and it wasn't original or unusual. There is a scene where Matt Damon and Minnie Driver are eating big cheeseburgers and kssing at the same time. I saw that in the movie theatre, on a BIG screen, and all i have to say is EEEEWWWWW!

A great movie that involves one man's struggle to cope with his own inability to pursue success due to personal insecurities of not only trust, but his own incapability to move forward in life.

This movie is an absolute triumph. The character collaboration and conflict is ingenius, every emotion played on, every heart opened, every thought explored. This is an incredibly responsible bit of filmmaking, wonderfully edited, divinely written. It prods into the human spirit as few others have done before it, trailing the life of boy/man genius Will Hunting. We see him in love, we see him in pain, we see him cornered, we see him forced to face his past, his present, and his future as an insanely gifted man. We see him interact with a variety of characters, including psychiatrists, bar buddies, childhood friends, fellow geniuses (with an explainable amount of contempt), and girls. He is both accelerated and hindered by his unheard of brain power, both good and bad sides of his talents are explored. Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, and Ben Affleck give performances comparable to Damon's own. Surprisingly, Casey Affleck, portraying the stupidest bloke in Boston as a foil to Will... Read more

It's good for insomniacs. It put me right to sleep and the plot is a wee too cliche. Good acting though. and who said these guys came out of nowhere? Ben affleck did other really good films long before this one.

I have no idea why this movie was rated the way it was. The main character created no sympathy for him in the movie, I didn't care what happened to his life. It was too intellectual for most people. The only character I did enjoy in the movie was Robin Williams.

They have great scripts, conversations and analogies in the movie. Matt Damon proved to be a good actor, although I don't really see him as a "bad boy from the hood" kind of guy.

Matt Damon's coming out party is made even better by the presence of his pal Ben Affleck. Written by the two stars, "Good Will's" dialogue carries this movie to greatness. An awesome mix of mushy stuff and hard conflict, this star-filled movie delivers the goods. "You like apples?" You should see this film.

Well written script, where all characters were fully realized. The audience got to understand each character's motivations and desires and fears. Very interesting to watch the main character, Will Hunting, because he was so complex. He was violent and vulgar on the one hand, but a genius and funny on the other. This movie had a great message underlying: everyone should find their potential, we shouldn't waste our lives because we are only alive for a short time.

An epic film of the lives of young men and women. It displayed the truth behind being brilliant and how one shows it! Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote the script and did the movie on their terms. I admire that. Robin Williams actually asked to be in the movie!

This is a good movie because it was made by regular guys. It is good to see Hollywood appreciate the sometmes raw talent that young actors may have. The story was good too. It shows us to follow what makes us happy, not rich.

This script was alright, despite the hype. When Matt Damon tells the story why he shouldn't work for them is the best scene. Yet, the movie unrealistic and had a conflicting moral. A violent Don Juan DeMarco is good at math and gets the girl. Not Williams, best film.

This movie is about a genius who's stuck in a job going nowhere, and in a city going nowhere. He reads to learn and has the gift of understanding almost anything. He solves math problems that even math professors can't solve. He wins the girl that he wanted at the end.

I love the Elliott Smith songs that give this movie its soft-spoken moody charm, but the plot didn't do much for me. Or maybe its just that I dont like Robin Williams or Matt Damon.

I really enjoyed this movie. Matt Damon does a good job playing the tough guy, tormented, working class genius, while Robin Williams (whom I'm not normally a big fan of) is outstanding as the therapist who is only barely keeping it all together. The chemistry between Damon and Williams is why this movie works. With a good story line, excellent acting, and likeable characters - this movie is highly recommended.
