I would never presume to call myself an expert on rap and hip-hop (I would probably call this closer to reggae anway), but I have been listening to this CD at work (one of my co-workers brought it in) and I really like it. Wyclef does a good job of blending some original work and interesting remixes with an original and unique sound. I have even found myself singing along at different points in the CD, a definite indication that I enjoy listening to it. If you're not sure if you're ready to buy it, check out some tracks at Napster to see if you like it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

If you liked the Carnival, you'll definitely like this one. This CD mixes original hip hop beats with dope lyrics. There are about seven songs that are a "must hear." Songs with Kenny Rogers and Mary J. Blige are phat.

I bought this CD for a couple of reasons: I like the Fugees, and I read all kinds of great reviews of Wyclef's solo work, especially this CD. So I decided to give it a try, even though I'm not generally a big rap/hip-hop fan. Turns out I really like "2 Sides II a Book." While it's definitely hip-hop, it's not hard-core - it's more a blend of diverse musical styles. On the first song, "Where Fugees At?," Wyclef makes it clear that he's his own man by taking shots at all the people who are harassing him for another Fugees CD. The lyrics and the intro are actually pretty amusing. At this point my favorite song is probably "Perfect Gentleman," a track that's so catchy I'll probably be tired of it in a week. Overall, Wyclef has filled this CD with some solid music, interesting guests (Kenny Rogers, Mary J. Blige, Youssou N'Dour, etc.), and enough originality to keep me listening for a long time.

What an interesting CD. Not pure hip-hop, not R&B, not reggae, not spoken word, but kind of a combination of all four. There are some nice, original melodies to some of these tracks - something which seems to rare in hip hop these days. Unlike a lot of other artists in this genre, Wyclef can actually sing, and he takes full advantage on tracks like 911 and Pullin' me In. It Doesn't Matter is more of a catchy, rap anthem kind of song (featuring The Rock), but still very good. If you are looking to try something different, I would recommend that you take a listen to this CD.
