Oh wow, a TV show about the Mafia and guys whacking each other. Total rip-off of movies done much better years earlier--like The Godfather and Goodfellas, for example.

This was a pretty intense series. Gandolfini was perfect for the role he played. The actors and storylines were so convincing this at times felt like a documentary on the life of a mobster.
jgls 09/28/2007
my rating is actually between a 3 and a 4 as some of the episodes during the last couple of years were barely watchable.
Jed1000 06/11/2007
Looks like I'm the exception here but I loved the ending. The entire thing was like a ticking time bomb... especially Meadow's troubles parking that car. Man, my heart was in my throat the entire time. Great writing.
A couple of things to keep in mind: 1.. Those two guys who came into the restaurant are the same two guys who tried to whack Christopher a couple of seasons back, 2.. Tony's father was whacked in a restaurant with his entire family present, and the family was spared, 3.. The Journey song "Don't Stop Believing" was playing in the background, 4.. HBO has already destroyed all the sets.
In spite of that last item I see a movie coming in a couple of years. Even James Gandolfini has said that he isn't opposed to the idea. My idea of what happened after 'fade to black'... There's a gun battle, everyone but Meadow survives..... movie in 2010.

WHAT A WAY TO END SUCH AGREAT SHOW! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE WRITERS THOUGHT THAT WAS CLEAVER?....UNIQUE?...KEEP UM GUESSING?...NO!
JUST PLAIN BAD WRITING AND DISREGARD FOR YOUR FANS.....!!!!!
YOU REALLY CHEATED YOU LOYAL FOLLOWERS!..AND DISAPOINTED!
NOT A GOOD WAY TO END...I'M SURE I WON'T WATCH ANYMORE HBO SERIES!

UPDATE AFTER FINALE: I am grossly disappointed in this outcome. This is very pedestrian as far as I am concerned. UPDATE: Many endings have been taped and I am interested to see the dvd to see all the variations. It all depends on Gandolfini's attitude. Does he want to keep the Tony Soprano figure alive for the future? If so, then, I think everyone will get bumped off and Tony will be sitting in the back room of the 'Bing, all alone. (This would allow for the movie or a return, however.) If Gandolfini is bone-tired of the role, then Tony is going to die. I would not be surprised if Paulie doesn't turn on Tony to sell him out at the end. This means that Phil Leotardo has suborned Paulie. Everyone dies and Paulie winds up running the remains of the DiMeo operation as part of Phil's big organization. Sylvio Dante appears to be done as we note that he is not expected to recover. Patsy Parisi, who was in the gunfight when Sylvio was shot, hates Tony anyhow as Patsy's twin brother was killed on Tony's orders because the twin intimated that Tony tried to kill Tony's mother. It will probably be the decline and fall of the Empire. ORIGINAL COMMENT: It's great--I love over the top mob shows! Just don't take it too seriously.

FUGHETTABOUTIT!!!! The top show of the last 10 years.

Newsflash: Everything about this show has been there/done that before with "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas." Totally unoriginal...
tjexpose 06/20/2006
The first few seasons were brilliant, funny, shocking and very entertaining. The 2006 season was a pathetic wretch of wandering nonsense. There was no further storyline or plot development and minimal closure of old loose ends. If you had skipped the entire season you would have missed almost nothing. The actors are milking the title and the producers have missed their chance for a memorable ending. I predict NO ENDING and an abrupt cancellation in 4 years after everybody else finally agrees with me. They are now pulling off a classic Soporano robbery.

I love 'The Soprano's'-and normally would give it a 5;but I gotta give it a 4 because I'm still mourning my favorite show,ever-'Crime Story'.

Edie, you emote here for your Emmy nomination. What a bore!
delbomber 03/19/2006
Seasons 1-3...smashing, brilliant. Season 4, except for the 'Pine Barrens' episode was tedious and unfocused. Season 5 showed again why the show should have ended after the originally planned fourth season...until the final few episodes which, carrying forth two years into season 6, has returned the show to its former glory.
Marc Hainey 03/14/2006
the most gripping show on televison!!
37102002 02/18/2006
Brilliantly written show from the very beginning. Season 2 was I think its best of the 5 seasons. Even its bad shows are better than 90% of what rolls on network TV. Probably the funniest drama ever, if that makes sense. Dont recall a show that deals with such a wide variety of relationships in such depth and detail as this one. Highly intelligent writing and directing. Gandolfini and Falco are far above average in their craft.
zuchinibut 01/21/2006
Everybody loves a good movie about the mafia, and HBO was able to bring it to TV. The Sopranos is definitely one of the best dramas on TV today, and I am looking forward to its new season.
janmeinen 01/04/2006
best serie there is!
worldcitizen18 44 12/26/2005
I heartily dislike shows which glorify the worst aspects of mankind. I find it very hard to believe the survey that says we prefer stories about the mafia and crime. This is another show with outstanding actors but the whole venue ruins it for me.
Djahuti 11/24/2005
Great acting, excellent cast.Having grown up among such families in a heavily Italian Jersey Neighborhood,I can testify that it's fairly accurate for a TV show.
GobTheHotCop 10/26/2005
This show is flat out spectacular, I love it!!! Worth the long wait between seasons.
Tuna 10/08/2005
HBO did a great job with this one. The writing and acting are superb.
Barno 09/23/2005
Not since All In The Family has there been such a groundbreaking show.
kattwoman 07/06/2005
the best show on hbo and my favorite all around. great storylines and a great cast
irishgit 03/25/2005
Well scripted, comptetently acted, savage and nasty. Used to be one of the few things on TV other than news and sports that I make any effort to watch. Has lost a lot of steam after the first three seasons however.
nacreous 03/13/2005
The show that makes network TV look flabby and dumb. One more season left to wrap things up; what will happen to Tony Soprano?
Estoy 01/18/2005
Don't get this show (literally...no HBO). Saw it once, and simply didn't care. Needs to go away, make room for better shows.
Mariner 10/28/2004
Can't wait for the new series to start here in Australia.Hopefully, Christopher will throw in a few more Springsteen lines for old Tony.
GypsyPrincess 10/06/2004
I love it, can't wait for it to come back!
fluffytuffy 09/13/2004
I used to really like this show, but it just was not all that interesting this past season, a yawner really, some good not great moments, mostly bad. And, frankly, I am getting tired of watching that grossly overweight Tony Soprano character chew up the scenery!
hevensgurl 07/28/2004
Although you may not like the show due to violence or language.Although, this is a sad reality in this type of mob world...it shows how these people really are brutal and unforgiving.. I have to give credit when credit it is due. Sorpanos is one of the best written and best acted shows on TV
Poker_MaFiA 07/23/2004
good show!!! the earlier seasons where very good!
TheDesertFox 07/09/2004
The first three seasons were really strong, and a few episodes- a few- since then, have been good. Overall, the show is losing it's appeal and heading downhill. It may have been better if they had ended it after the 5th season, because the last two seasons have not been nearly as good or exciting as the first 3.
ClassicTVFan47 06/28/2004
I continue to wonder the appeal of the HBO network. Aside from the occasional good movie, their original programming contains some of the worst television shows of all time. Forget My Mother, The Car, shows like Sopranos and Sex & The City should become the butt of bad television jokes and synonmous with bad television. But, for some reason, these creatively barren shows getting glowing reviews from critics and even manage to gather a fan base! Apparently, critics like tons of mindless profanity, stupid violence, and the humanizing of criminals who kill hundreds. Not I, said the good guy.
spdpilot 05/05/2004
I was a huge fan of the series, I still enjoy it, but I think it is starting to go down hill. With so few episodes, to much time is wasted on story lines that go nowhere. The older shows were more complex and engaging. Tony needs a rival, like Uncle Jr., but there is no one now. Also, with the divorce of Tony, plus the kids leaving, it really takes a good element of the story line out of the series. The other family is great, but the home family really added reality to it. And they have taken much of the humor out of the series. It made it feel real when you saw Paulie, or someone make a mistake and then have to make it right. I hope they fix some of these things, and get the show back to what made it interesting. It's still a good show, and I will always be a fan. It's the only show I watch on a regular basis.
Lialala 04/01/2004
I don't get all the hype, one of the most boring shows ever.
evileye 04/01/2004
One of the most entertaining show on TV!!!! I love Tony!!
richard kurlander 03/26/2004
It's gone from my favorite must see program to unwatchable. It's lost all appeal. All the humanity is gone. Just another wise guys gore fest.
kinkykinks 03/13/2004
are you sh*ting me sicherry? this is the best show on hbo i can't believe it not in the top 3
BklynGirl 03/09/2004
Coming from a Sicilian family, I can tell you that the male/female relationships are written very accurately. I am glued to my seat every Sunday (and not just because I am a New Yorker who loves to make fun of characters from New Jersey, either!)
minkey 02/18/2004
This is the only television show I watch. I think the storyline and characters are phenomenal. I love money, women, gambling, humor, violence, and Jersey and this show has it all. It is on HBO and on late enough where you parents can quiet down a little.
atlsheriff 11/26/2003
This show contributes to the problems that we are facing with our children. Parents that watch this show and actually like it has no future for their children. The show is about everything that a parent should be teaching what is wrong. we only have 1 chance to raise our kids and this show should be taken off the air. HBO is making the mobster life like it is something good. The only fans that watch, envy the life of a unfaithful liar that sets bad example of a Father and Husband. This show also has followers of the following TERRIBLE shows The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead and the Ozborns. Oh, did I mention the really bad acting of the Sopranos cast.
