Newhart was a fine comedian, whose ability to nail a laugh with a pregnant pause and seemingly natural reaction to the absurdity of things around him was reminiscent of Jack Benny. A relatively tame half hour that avoided controversy and appealed to middle America, the series strayed away form the trend of the era, when TV comedy had to be topical and bold. It focused on character and a big part of the strength of the show was a supporting cast of crazy patients, eccentric co-workers, a daffy nieghbour and a great straight woman in Suzanne Pleshette. It was never called ground breaking but probably stands as more timeless for that reason. The surprising thing was that Bob Newhart pulled the same trick off a second time with his subsequent long running series Newhart.

Bob's deadpan "deer in the headlights" look and stammer were pretty funny...

Just really not a fan at all. I have always found Bob Newhart to be quite overrated as a comedic actor. I'll watch the flinstones reruns before anything with newhart's name in it

A great showcase for Bob's talents, coming off of his successes as a stand-up comic. The later "Newhart" was a better sit-com (can anyone forget Larry, his brother Darryl and his other brother Darryl?) but this is still wirthwhile. Great slice of life in the mid-70s.

Excellent show for the time. Aimed more for the adult viewer than the kids. Still funny today. I agree that Newhart was a step up from the Bob Newhart Show. (Much bigger budget too)

I thought this was one of the funniest shows he ever made. It was definitely one of my favorites with Marcia Wallace, Peter Bonerz and Suzanne Pleschett. I love classic TV so much that I created a page at myspace.com/classicTVshowsPlease stop by for a fun visit.

Timeless...as funny today as it was in the 70's. I didn't care to much for Newhart's TV efforts after this, but "The Bob Newhart Show" is a classic.

Very funny. I don't think there was another sit-calm about shrinks or counselors back in the day. One of the reasons for it's popularity.

Since dry wit and cerebral humor is generally my preference, "The Bob Newhart Show" was right up my alley. If memory serves, Newhart has always claimed that his style is "buttoned-down", and that seems like an appropriate description. Newart's straight man to a cast of relative eccentrics had been done before and since, but never any better than on this series. Bob isn't even safe at home, as his neighbor (Bill Daily) is just as maladjusted as his psychology patients; however, wife Emily usually serves as his harbor in the tempest. As icing on the cake, in my opinion the show had one of the best theme songs (i.e. "Home To Emily") in television history.

Though flawed, tremendous supporting cast and guests elevated subtle humor to hilarity

Bob Newhart is brilliant! He could be your father or the guy next door (as a matter of fact his sense of humor often mimicked that of my fathers). The Bob Newhart show was one that most people, I feel; could share some commonality with, be it in the character of howard the pilot or jerry the dentist. Carol and Emily were awsom characters; the actors performances mirrored that of a family who had been together for half a lifetime through all the ups and downs of life. I also loved "Newhart."...This was actually my very favorite Bob Newhart sitcom... Bob Newhart is and will always be my favorite actor.

The only person i cared less for than Mary Tyler Moore was this Bob Newhart show.Although he does have a talent for dry humor it wasn't until he got that tv show in the hotel with the 3 larrys or whoever they were was his niche showcased.

Did you ever play Hi, Bob? It's a party group activity and whenever someone, on the show, said, Hi, Bob, we had to take a big drink. If you weren't a fan of Newhart, then this show was not for you. Sometimes you had to watch an episode more than once to get it.

This shows strenght of suttle dry humor was also it's weakness as many wouldn't be able to follow it. It's characters were funny and it's hidden humor was there and funny, sometimes you just had to watch a little closer.

This was Newhart's worst TV sitcom. The 80's NEWHART was so much better, and with better supporting actors as well. I think the show was just way ahead of its time, and the writers did a terrible job as well. I don't recommend it.

Along with MTM one of the best comedies of all time, let alone the 70s.The interplay between the fellow doctors and patients were great.I always wished Mr Carlin would have gotten a spinoff.

Bob Newhart is an American legend. What a funny and unoffensive show. I particularly liked Bob and Suzanne Pheshette togehter. This is a very classy show that deserves to be a part of the wonderful Saturday CBS lineup.

"The Bob Newhart Show" was ok, but I like his 80's sitcom "Newhart" so much better.

You'd have to be a real die-hard fan of Bob Newhart to enjoy The Bob Newhart Show. Very dark and boring sitcom.

The Bob Newhart Show is one of the best sit-coms ever made and also one of the classiest. I felt like I was living in Bob and Emily's apartment building and loved the feeling of it. To me the show was all about dealing with the feelings of others, and doing it with a low-key, classy sense of humor. Suzanne Pleshette and Bob Newhart seemed unlikely to me together at first, but it didn't take long for me to feel that no other people could've made this show work as well as it did. Sophisticated, capable Emily and intellectual, slightly imperfect Bob set off sparks of humor and freshness together. A wonderfully comforting, smart series!
