The Dalamatian is a good all around family dog. They get along with just about anyone and are highly energetic. They will need lots of room to run so these dogs are best suited for large yards or a farm. Otherwise, some animals will get bored and develop anxiety issues. However, these dogs shed constantly so they will require constant brushing in order to keep the shed down to a minimum.

I don't care for them. I'm sure there are decent individual dogs, but every single one I've met has been a high strung, aggressively obnoxious asshole. Oddly enough, the same description applies to the Dalmation owners I've met too.

Dalmatians are sweet, friendly loving family dogs. They are extremely brilliant, beautiful and easy as heck to train. Even deaf Dals. The freaks on here who call Dals stupid or dumb have less IQ points than a snail. Mine is a rescue found in the streets of Tijuana Mexico. She was a little butty as a 6 month old puppy who had been tossed in the gutter. But with a little time, patience and love, she has blossomed into the most incredible dog I have ever met. She is a little ray of sunshine making people smile wherever we go. Dalmatians are not at all "hyper" they are energetic. They need exercise. That's it. With a nice walk and a couple of tosses of the ball each AM she sleeps all day. And she's only 3. Because of their intelligence they do well to be entertained. Mine likes to watch TV and play with puzzle games. Make sure though that if you bring a Dally home that you are prepared for a dog who will want a lot of your love and attention.

My dad breeds dalmatians and they are wonderful intelligent dogs. They would learn commands under 5 repetitions and are so naturally clean. They are also sweet dogs that love human companionship, Sanch and Lulu (the parent dogs) play well with my 3 year old half brother and even enjoy laying around on the couch. The only problems I have seen with them is that they tend to roam when outside for too long and are very protective of my fathers property. They also get urinary stones and even though prone to deafness. Dogs can be taught sign language VERY easily. The father dog (who can hear) was taught sign language as well as voice commands and responds to both with food and praise. Like with any dog Dals are not perfect, but with patience can be taught easily. (easier than any breed I have ever had!)

Our Sissy is a `5 year old Dalmatian. She is the best dog ever. My mother in law rescued her as a puppy but close to being at her full grown stage. She is good with kids, she always comes back to the yard and does as asked. The only thing about Dalmatians are that they chase anything that runs. That includes cats, rabbits, squirrels, chickens. They are very active and want lots of attention so they are not recommended for elderly or those that work alot.

Because of the movie "101 Dalmatians," Dalmatians became a fad breed in the 1990s. Unknowledgeable people tried to cash in on the breed's popularity by breeding every Dalmatian they could get their hands on, including individuals with bad temperaments. The result is LOTS of Dalmatians with neurotic temperaments, including biting, wild hyperactivity, and extreme stubbornness.

Health problems and temperment issues. This breed, like many others that were not bred for a job; is rittled with issues. I hate never met a good one. I am sure that there are some out there that are wonderful; as not all dogs of any given breed is bad; but I have just never met one at the vet's office where I work.

People who have problems with dogs have gone to aan unqualified breeder or other place! Go to a  qualified registered breeder and get your pups! Our dalmation came form a very wonderful breeder and she knew just what I wanted and Sparky was a wonderful friendly dog.  We got so many compliments when walking her or taking her on vactions when we camped with her! Dogs like humans ~some are just wonderful and some are just rotten! Good luck with your  puppy and dogs! Breeders who are qualified not BYB or puppy mill pups but quailified breeders are the best! worth the extra money for sure!

Pretty to look at, but I wouldn't own one around kids or other dogs. I won't put my hand out to pet one because of my experiences with them. They tend to try to bite without any reason - dogs, people other animals. Not a good choice for a family pet

I love dalmatians, but I don't think I'll ever own one again. Through imbreeding, a majority of them are now deaf so they come across as stubborn because they do not listen to commands. The dogs can be taught through sign language, but most people would agree that they probably have neither the time nor energy to spend trying to train a dog with that method.

im 18 and have had my dalmation since i was about 8. Hes a GREAT family dog, they are really protective, if a friend even puts a arm on me he will become very alert and run to me unless i tell him to lay down or something. last year i was sleeping ( he sleeps in my room) and it was 3 in the morning and my dalmation started barking through my window...i woke up and saw a guy opening my car door and then looked at me and ran off. Dalmations are very good watch dogs and mine was very very easy to train and teach tricks to.

I've owned Dalmatians for over 30 yrs. This breed requires a knowledgable breeder. If well bred they are not hyper, aggressive, or destructive and as a whole a very intelligent breed. I always tell people they are much smarter than their owners. They do need training as a young dog. Since the are intelligent they need to have limits set for them nor to they respond well to harsh corrections. A prospective buyer needs to research the breed well before purchasing as they like all pure bred breeds of dogs have special needs and health issues inherent to the breed. A Dalmatian is NOT for everyone. They need human companionship and are not a dog that can be left alone or ignored for long periods of time. If you want a loving friend and companion though, this is the breed for you.

Only if you are able to devote enough time with such dogs that are active, then you can get this one. I happen to be with this type when I was in another country and I was surrounded by six of them. They are quite friendly and athletic. Do enough studying on dog breeds, but do not get one because it was shown on a movie. This also includes those who saw Old Yeller &/or Lassie.

I have always had a dog and had always admired the dalmatian from afar as I had been led to believe they were a stupid dopey and untrainable dog. How wrong was I?? I got Dylan at 11 weeks old and he is the most intelligent animal I have ever met. Ok he needs alot of attention and exercise but I knew that before i got him. His good points definately outweigh the bad. He opens the door for himself to go out and even closes it behind him when he comes back in. He is great with people and other dogs and the only problem I have is eeping him away from footballs on the park!! He loves children and just wants to play all the time. He is an excellent guard dog and an asset to our household. My advice would be, if you cant spare these beautiful dogs your time and energy then simply dont get one. Buy a doormat instead!!

Pretty dogs, but mean. They snap at other dogs and have what you would call tempers.

Dalmations are a terrific family dog - unless you are a couch potato. You must be willing to interact with this breed or there will be trouble. Dals are incedibly intelligent and need to be trained with positive reinforcement. There are many myths about this dog which are dangerous and harmful (espcially for the breed). Do not EVER get any pet (even a fish) unless you are willing to care for the pet properly by training YOURSELF first. Otherwise you ar enothing less than a sadistic killer. I own a deaf dal who is amazing and not aggressive. I wonder how the hell you get from Deaf to Aggressive? That's a leap. Take care...

I think that these are one of the most attractive breeds of dogs I've ever seen. Unfortunately, they have a genetic defect which results in 1 in 7 dalmatian puppies being born completely deaf. The deaf puppies are usually destroyed, since they cannot expect to have any kind of a good quality of life, and it's impossible to train them to do anything. I wish more people knew this before going out and buying one of them because they are so adorable.

I have family that bought three of these, at seperate times. It came on thanks to the Disney movies according to her. The first Dalmation ate rat poison and died. The second ran out in the middle of the highway. And the third ended up in the middle of the Ohio Turnpike. As you can tell, not a very smart dog.

I'm surprised to find dalmatians aren't more highly placed and praised on Rateitall. My cousins had one called Henry, which i got to know very well, and which(in his later years) my wife and i would look after when they were on holiday abroad.Henry was a delightful advert for the breed- very friendly,obedient,well-behaved,alert,good with other dogs.He was a little on the boisterous side when younger(hardly unusual),but generally very easy-going and affectionate.(We did not find him difficult to manage when we took him for a walk.) And of course, extremely debonair.A female i also knew was lovely and gentle.Dalmatians do,however, need plenty of space and exercise;their athleticism, stamina, energy and elegance made them ideal carriage dogs in bygone times. To summarise-sorry,i can't resist it!-they knock spots off most other breeds and pets.

Please don't select a dog based on a Disney movie - so many dalmations have gotten the shaft because of this. If you don't know anything about this breed or aren't willing to be open minded enough to learn, then get your kid a stuffed animal. I think this is a perfectly wonderful breed of dog. But they are a one owner dog, grow to be more large boned than you would be led to believe, and have a rather serious personality. Like any other breed on this list you really need to do some research into them before you can make an intelligent decision as to whether or not they are right for you and your family.

My experience with Dalmatians has been that they are somewhat insane - rumor has it as a result of cross breeding. They are difficult to train, erratic in moods and behavior, and a general pain in the ass.

Dalmations seem to be a crap shoot. Some are mean, some are nice, some are smart, some seem a little slow. The only constant is that they're all hyper-active, especially as puppies. But they definitely get points for the cool "fire fighter" thing.
