Boxers are large dogs (55-75 lbs.) classified as Working Dogs. Some people claim the breed was developed in the 19th century for bullbaiting and dogfighting.

Boxers are a great all-around dog, but they are not for everyone. If you are lazy and/or don't have dog experience, dont waste your time. They are incredible dogs, very friendly, yet protective. The sight of them is enough to deter most people. A boxer will always have your back and can always make you smile. They bond closely with their families, and are especially fond of children. About many of the drooling comments, well bred boxers rarely do. Usually only after they drink excessive amounts of water. I have had 10 boxers since I was in diapers, and my earliest memories were of our two at the time bringing me my sippy cup or bottle whenever I cried. I will never be without one of these incredible dogs. :)

A walking mass of muscle and not much brain. They will rip your arm off at the shoulder if walking them on leash and they see something worth chasing. Obedience training would be a must this dog. Though they are lovable and loyal, they like to roam and are known for digging under fences to get away.

Ok, so IMO. The Boxer that I had, we tried to train, and he just did NOT get it. Was literally dumb. The coolest things he did was every time he ran, he ran like a deer. No joke. But, really, we trained all the other dogs (separately, of course) and they all caught on, even the puppy (2mo) got it. OMG, I will Never take one in again. A few of my friends have them, and their dogs seem ok, but I just will NEVER own them. Will just stay with my pound puppies...

This breed has quite a few good and bad qualities about it. Being that I work in a group environment of dogs, my rating of thses dogs is just around other dogs. Here's the good. They are adorable and very loving with people. They are comical and half the time they flop around in silliness. I love getting hugs and kisses from them. Here's the bad. Most dogs can't tolerate their type of play. They really do "box" and their strength often hurts the other dogs in the room. Alot of dogs have a fear of them and try to escape them. When more than one Boxer is in our group, they keep eachother busy and can handle eachother's strength..that is good. They have a tendency to be protective. On more than one occassion I have had these dogs be toy and people protective and will attack other dogs without thinking twice. I had one dog in our group that was so protective of me that he wouldn't let anyone else in the room near me. They are working dogs, though, so this is part of the breed.

Boxers are a goregous breed of dog! They have the most optimistic, loving, intelligent, friendly, protective and funny personality any dog could ever have! On a bad day this breed will make you laugh non stop at the retarded and dorky things they do. These dogs are born to please their owners any way possible! I do agree they are not for every owner due to the breed being very active but if you have a big yard and other dogs the Boxer will enjoy the company and entertain himself while you're away. You MUST remember to train these dogs as pups so that they do not pick up bad habits. As pups they are very intelligent, learn quickly and hate to be punished. My 9 week old brindle female named Casey is very sensitive to vocal tone change. She picks up quickly when its a serious NO that you're saying and she understands that whatever she's doing is bad. At 6 weeks of age she learned her sit command as well as her stay command. She's very vocal and has a habit of "talking" back to my Mother when my Mom is punishing her. We have noticed that some Boxers tend to be one owner dogs. With Casey this is the case. Although she adores the family she prefers to be with me at all times. However, I have had one Boxer/mix who was a complete family dog - I suppose it depends on the dog or it could also depend on its breeding. But as I've mentioned before the Boxer breed is a great dog to have as a family dog when raised as a pup and given the needed attention!!!

I have had several dogs over the years, three have been Boxers. I agree with an earlier post, they are not for everyone. I have nothing against other breeds at all; however Boxers are the breed for me. They can be a handful and require a lot of attention, but your efforts will be repaid with loyalty, companionship, and comic relief. (Anyone who has had a Boxer will understand the comic relief comment.)

I got my Boxer by accident..she just happend to be the dog at the pound that I connected with.  Well, it's love from day one.  That first night she lay between me and my husband in bed, on her back, sprawled out and asleep as if she was meant to be there from day one.  She is the most intelligent, gorgeous, playful and naughty dog I've ever had. I wouldn't give up any of those qualities.  Soon after we got her, we saw a couple walking their Boxer puppy in the neighborhood and became friends with them, now we keep the two dogs together all the time either at their house or at ours.  They are in love and are miserable when they are separated.  I'm hooked on the breed...and with children?  Just the best!

Love them love them love them.  The descriptions here are so accurate.  They are not for every person and if you don't have one of your own they can be annoying.  My husband wanted a boxer for a long time and I finally felt like I caved in.  I was worried about their strength, their high energy level, and slobber. We now have two and they are sometimes hard to handle alone, but I cannot imagine not having them.

Despite the slobber which ruins your clothes just as you are walking out the door, there is something so special about the love they give you.  They will follow you every time you get up from the couch even into the restroom.   They just have to be around you all the time.  There is something comforting about that - not the restroom part!

Personally love the breed to death, the day I don't have one in-house is going to be a "constantly-on-the-verge-of-tears" kind of day.

However these guys certainly aren't for everyone.  They're smart-as-hell, mischevious-as-can-be, complete social butterflies (assuming you've gotten one from good stock and raised it accordingly), will demolish your living room in 5 minutes flat if bored, need a ton of play & mental games, are stubborn and can be difficult to train as they have their own mind (& alot of it), slobber, snore, are rambunctious, are pups forever, and have heartbreaking genetic cardiac diseases.  Get one at your own risk.  Or borrow someone else's for a day.

I have had many dogs, only one of them a boxer. They are not for the timid or inexperienced owner. They need more time and affection than most, but if you can give them that they will give you back more than any other breed. They seem to have a more expressive and intelligent nature than most other breeds as well. Very loving and funny. Five stars for myself, fewer for the less hands on owners.

I understand people's attraction to this breed. They are nice dogs but I just don't care for them. I always appreciate a nice dog. I have friends with great boxers. I just don't want one...they slobber, they are like bulls in a china shop, and they have some pretty serious health issues.

I am the proud owner of two beautiful, playful, EXTREMELY energetic boxers! I dont think that I can ever have another breed of dog after having them. Yes they are full of energy and VERY playful. also they are excellant guard dogs (no i have not trained them to be like that... they just are). they are time consuming but all the love that they give so freely and the joy that you feel when they greet you at the door is indescribable and well worth it!!

I love my Boxer! My two boys think she is just another kid to play with, as she does too. She is the latest of FOUR Boxers I've had. Starting when I was ten years old until now this is the BEST, most fun and loyal animal I've ever encountered! I have never seen one of my Boxers nip, snap - much less bite anybody.

My husband's family has had only boxers for years. We have had two but recently had to have the oldest put down. He was 11. I can't imagine having any other breed. They are very loyal, protective, but fun with very distinct personalities. All breeds have a bad apple now and then but the majority of boxers are great dogs.

Before we owned a boxer I was very sceptical about getting one - not for any particular reason, but mainly because I had only ever owned German Sheppards and was biassed towards them. However, when we brought our boxer puppy home I fell in love! He's 2 and a half now and he is the most intelligent and loveable dog I've ever had. Not to mention gorgeous. He can be cunning when he realises we are cooking his favourite food - roast lamb or anything with cheese in it, but it all adds to his loveability. I am totally converted! I have only heard negative stories about aggressive boxers when they are mixed with another breed such as Rotwheiller, Bull dog, etc. Boxers are not for everyone - they need lots of attention, they are demanding, and boisterous. I've personally found though that these qualities add to their charm and leads them to have very distinct, individual personalities.

Our white boxer left us in January 2006. And do i miss him! He was extremely obedient, loyal, very loving, and caring and understanding. And as with all dogs, he had genuinely unconditional love for us. A great companion and he always made us smile. I feel boxers are the most loving dogs. I had one more brownie before him. I have had two bad experiences with dogs attacking my dog, both dogs were Boxers. The one Boxer was at the dog park, my dog took his ball and BAM! The boxer attacked, bit my dogs ear. These dogs are very popular right not, i see so many of them at the dog parks. Perhaps they are being inner bred due to supply and demand. I also noticed that they tend to be bullies at the park as far as humping and dominance.

I try to see the best in every dog but i had a bad start with a boxer. There was a boxer on my street, its owners had let it off the lead and I (was about 6) had comeout the sweet shop with some sweets. The dog came flying towards me at full speed and flew at me, barking and growling. it winded me and bit my hand very hard. What outraged me the most was the owners, they did absolutly nothing just stood across the road saying "hes only playing"! Im sure most boxers are good pets and stuff like that, but im just a bit wary of them now. Its a shame.

Boxers are my husbands favorite dog, and if you ever met his Tinker you'd know why. When we first were living together we were away so much and so tired at the end of the day, that she became almost depressed. So we let her go live with his cousin in the mountains where she can visit with friends and family almost 24/7. Our second attempt at having a Boxer was a failure on our part. BOXERS NEEDS COMPANIONSHIP AND LOTS OF GENTLE GUIDANCE! I still feel bad about not having taken the time to properly train her. She found a new home after my pregnancy prevented me from walking her (what she needed was running!) and taking her to obedience classes. She pulled me over too many times. So please do yourself and these wonderful dogs a favor and devote yourself to raising them properly. I have seen what a great family dog they can be. Tinker still loves us and our 2 little kids to death when we visit.

I have owned Boxers for fifteen years now. In that span I have had three, two males, one female. Each one was unique but they all shared that same care-free personality and that wiggly nature. Of the five different breeds I have actually had, Boxer's are my favorites. Not overly better than any other breed at any one thing, but overall their temperment, playfullness, loyalty, protection and intelligence is probably better than any dog. I suspect it is mostly an opinion and that each one has their own, but graded by all things, the Boxer is the best dog. It knows its strength and tempers it around children and is careful and protective of the youngsters in the house. Males seem to be more aggressive than the females, but never have any of them bit anyone, even strangers. Males just seem to bark at strangers more than the females, but females are pretty fierce if they feel a child is being threatened. With any breed, they have their bonus' and their flaws. They tend to be hyper and need a lot of attention and long periods of not seeing the man/woman of the house can cause a bit of distress, almost unhealthy. Because of their size, they tend to live only medium length lives. None of my Boxers lived past ten, though I have heard of some living to 12 and even 14 years. Mange is also a concern and Boxer's are prone to getting it, but a good regular hygenic bath and regular checkups can prevent this. Of all the breeds, I would only give two a five rating and Boxers are one of them. (Golden Retreivers being the other)
