May be the best NFL broadcaster EVER (although some of you beg to differ). He's funny, smart and just makes watching a game enjoyable.

Nobody has a firmer grip of the obvious than Madden. After several plays in the Super Bowl he would proceed to explain what we just watched with absolutely no insight or creativity. "Well, Roethlisberger started out going right and then he cut back to the left and Tatupu came up and made the tackle." That type of commentary could be done by a high school kid. Writing all over the monitor has also long since lost its novelty.

I used to think he was pretty cool but now all he does is ramble and state the obvious (things like "And that's what you gotta do as a quarterback is throw the ball down the field") HUH???? And his relentless ass-kissing of Tom Brady while analyzing a recent playoff game was just annoying and way overdone. Enough already! Think he needs to retire, getting senile.

A lot of ppl hate Big John, but he is the everything of the NFL. He is not a know-it-all, he is really humble and considerate. It is loads of fun to make fun of him though. I've heard some hilarious impersonations. I truly admire and respect John Madden as almost everyone in the game does. Couldn't imagine football without him.

Holy crap! What's this buffoon doing on TV? It's a good thing there's a mute button on the remote. This doddering fool makes one wonder why Dennis Miller got bumped. Get him off...now!!

I detest John Madden. He makes MNF very hard to watch and I think he is making Al Michaels a little dumber along the way. Somebody please send him a dictonary because everybody is not the greatest or that special. I could rant on for hours, but I will just end by reiterating that I hate John Madden. I also feel very sorry for people that are fans of his and i hope you have your tubes tied or a little snip-snip so that morons like you won't breed anymore.

The only reason I even game him a 2 is because of his kick ass video games. but as a sports caster he is so annoying, he makes the most unintelligent comments about the game. He knows football there's no doubt about that but he seems to think the audience is stupid or something. John Madden was a great coach that shouldn't be announcing he is just out of his 1980's element

HAHA I'm surprised at all the negative comments about Madden. He's a good football guy who was an excellent coach and has excellent knowledge of the game. He has gone down some, but has always been regarded as a very good announcer. He's a goofball at times, and some of the things he says that aren't about football proves that his intelligence outside of football is low, but sometimes it's funny to hear the ridiculous things he says. Like once last season Lisa Guerrero said as a former soap opera vixen I know good drama when I see it. Madden then said hey Al, vixen, isn't that one of Santa's reindeers? He said that while the camera was showing them and the look on Al's face clearly showed that he must have been thinking in his head what kind of a moron am I working with here? That was hilarious, and then Madden tried saying the names of all the reindeers. I hope someone forces him to get on airplane one day, what the hell is it with him and being so scared to fly. I also like his video... Read more

At one point he was enjoyable to listen to and made decent observations, but he has become an irrelevent peon. Because of his contribution to the industry I give him 3 stars, but he is close to a 0 today. Al Michaels can do the game by himself - he provides better analysis and understanding of game situations than the so-called expert. Frank Caliendo on MadTV and the Fox Pregame Show does a great immitation of Madden. It sums up Madden perfectly: stammering for an eternity before finally making brilliant observations like football players play football. Madden has been a shill for various products for years, but it never bothered me. That is, until last year, when Madden did the tasteless commercial for Outback Steakhouse where it showed a player paralyzed on the field who miraculously gets revived by a meal from Outback. Madden has made so much money over the years, why would he need to do this type of ad, especially since he was the Raiders Coach when Darryl Stingley of the ... Read more

Anyone who can't show respect for John Madden simply isn't a real sports fan. Madden is the voice of football on and off the field that spans across generations. Madden has been in all of our living rooms on Thanksgiving day, and he's a staple for the NFL and broadcasting.

Ok, so John was a great coach. And I'll admit that he still knows a heap more than I'll ever. But, the first thing I thought when I saw the Ten-Dal game was Oh NO! Madden Again! How do I watch without listening to this guy repeat the obvious while interupting the next event? I have the upmost respect for this man, but get him away from the main mic. and quit drawing all over my TV while I'm trying to watch the game.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and he's forgotten more football than most coaches know. He has the highest winning percentage of all time as a head coach, so as far as football is concerned, yes, he is a know-it-all who does know it all. Anyone know where I can find some turducken?

Two words to Madden-Shut Up. I won't watch MNF anymore because I can't stand him. He comments on everything and takes forever to do it and any player he comments on is "the best" in what he does. I've missed some great games and will miss more-I know the days of Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and company are over, but I can dream!

Prior to about ten years ago, Madden was the best. But he seems to have lost interest in his vocation, and is content now to rest on past laurels and timeworn schtick. His on-air persona seems to have gotten a lot dumber in recent years, either because he thinks that's what the audience wants or because disinterest has dulled his senses.

Can he please be airlifted from the booth and replaced by Dennis Miller? His tenure as a football announcer is testimony to the low IQ of the average sports fan. Now, take that low IQ, and consider that half the sports have IQs lower than that. This means we have a nation full of idiots, which is why this particular one still has a job.

People, John Madden knows a little bit about football. He only took the Raiders and won a Super Bowl as a coach. I'll give you the point about him getting annoying. But I'd rather watch him in a blow out or on a Thanksgiving than any other Football commentator. Well, except for Keith Jackson maybe.

Looking at the other raters on this website, I was a little surprised. I think Madden has lost it. . .what was cutting-edge in the 80's and 90's is a little stale because Madden is slowing down. He's making more mistakes. He should have been on MNF years ago. Although a half-senile Madden is still better than half the announcers today.

ok first i hope that the bozo john madden or deat beat dad sees this. i may not kno a lot about foot ball and im only 14 but i do kno that he is an over payed bad excuse for a rich lazy moran. i am a huge fan of good charlotte and if i am correct he left his kids. 3 sons and a daughter on xmas eve. i am glad that benji and joel made it big with good charlotte. and i also think that john doesnt kno a thing bout football and it dunt take a semi- smart person to sit on his fat butt and say which team has the foot ball. i dunt think he is funny and i think he has made mistakes and i think its terrible that some people think he is a talented speaker! get a life and maybe relize that u have kids and a wife.

No one mentions the fact of what a blatant shill he is either! Does he really need to advertise for Rent-a-Center as well? Is it just me, or does everytime Madden talks about something, it's so blatantly obvious, and you can see a glimmer in Pat Summerall's eye that he wants to slap the piss out of the overrated geezer standing next to him who is more enthused about his turducken and cankles then in providing insightful comments.

John Madden has nothing new to offer. He's a fat, sloppy person who looks terrible on TV. His patter is now old and boring. He doesn't mesh with Al Michaels. He frequently gets in the way of the game. MNL is totally blah this year.

i am shocked and appalled this pretend know-it-all is this high in the rankings, and then to read these comments? How can so many people say he knows football, he freakin sits there and points out the most obvious things i have ever seen in my life. He will make completely innane statements about a play, they show a replay which completely proves him wrong, and he still stands by what he said. Pat Summerall had to sit there and actually try to defend this idiot's statements for how many years? no wonder he retired. I'm not positive, but i believe he was wearing Rams apparell in the booth during last years superbowl, because he was their number one fan that night. He had absolutely nothing prepared to say about the Patriots, and was scrambling for information when the Pats took the lead. I've used up my space for now, but John Madden sucks.

Madden is someone I have always enjoyed listening to. His comments are right on target and he's fair. He doesn't bore you to death with his knowledge of the game, he just says what needs to be said and that's it. A great many people could take a page from his book.

A great legacy that's slipping away because of the current MNF format. Madden and Michaels are good, but the format works best with three good people. As it is, Madden gets to talk too much, and sometimes, when he's too wound up, sounds like, well, a drunk in a bar. Isn't it time for a woman in the booth, too, somebody like Suzy Kolber or Michele Tafoya?
