    I'm reposting my opinion with some edits and new information. Free Credit Reports are a Rip Off! Save your money and don't do it! The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act allows a person to request information from a Credit Reporting Agency (CRA) in order to dispute information. In certain cases there is no charge if a person or company has taken action against you. At your request, a CRA must give you the information in your file, and a list of everyone who has requested it recently. There is no charge for the report if a person has taken action against you because of information supplied by the CRA, if you request the report within 60 days of receiving notice of the action. You also are entitled to one free report every twelve months upon request if you certify that (1) you are unemployed and plan to seek employment within 60 days, (2) you are on welfare, or (3) your report is inaccurate due to fraud.     Be extra careful about these free credit report sites. Well, I can say from experience because I'm a sucker at freecreditreport.com. When you sign up for the so-called free credit report on their web site, they will start to bill you after that if you did not realize the fine print. I think lots of people have fallen to this ploy and they have been sued by the FTC before. Read it here at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/08/consumerinfo.shtm. In there it says : It deceptively marketed “free credit reports” by not adequately disclosing that consumers automatically would be signed up for a credit report monitoring service and charged $79.95 if they didn’t cancel within 30 days, in violation of federal law. According to the FTC’s complaint, Consumerinfo’s advertising and Web sites failed to explain adequately that after the free trial period for the credit monitoring service expired, consumers automatically would be charged a $79.95 annual membership, unless they notified the defendant within...
