I cannot think of a movie in which he appeared that I did not like, and I always liked his character. That, in my opinion, is a sign of a great actor. I also liked the flicks that he directed. Gee, I am sorry that he was not politically correct.

as an actor he's done some good stuff and shown he's pretty versatile. as a film maker he's a peddlar of distorted history viz 'The Patriot' and 'Braveheart'.

Dear Mel,
The only problem you got is your drinking. But I also realize that one says stupid things when one is drunk. So lay off the juice and you'll be ok. I love your movies and I think in general your a great guy. I will continue to patronize your films, as long as you sober up.

How can anyone act surprised that he's an anti-Semite after "The Passion of the Christ"? As far as his acting ability, I've never been a great fan, but I maintain a certain amount of respect for any actor with the stones (or hubris) to tackle "Hamlet".

I've been a fan of Mel's since "Tim." He is the only working actor today for whom I'll watch a movie just to enjoy his perfomance. Jack Nicholson was in that category, but has lost it. Not many of those in the last few years.

I first saw this guy in "Mad Max" and "The Road Warrior" and liked him right off. He's also got the balls to do films like "We Were Soldiers" and "The Passion." 10,000 Alec Baldwins or Billy Bob Thorntons aren't worth one of him.

I happen to be a huge Mel Gibson fan and beleive that he has proven himself to be a great actor. He does this by making his characters believable. He was the flirty, goofy, yet reliable cop in the Lethal Weapons. He was the steadfast father who would do anything for his kids in Patriot and Signs. He was the fearless leader in Braveheart(my all-time favorite) and We Were Soldiers. And he was the bad guy who was just charismatic enough to make you love him and overlook the fact that he killed people without blinking an eye in Payback. And I have yet to see anyone else portray pain as well as he does. Seriously, There have been times when I wondered if the director yelled cut thinking they had actually harmed him.

I've seen a few of his films. The Man Without a Face is my favorite so far. In terms of his acting ability, he isn't half bad but not 100% convincing. I do think he is a bit overrated as an actor, but I'd have to see more of his films to have a better judgment. I do like the way he directs though. He can paint an amazing picture.

Mel is great and he is so versatile. He was fantastic in Brave Heart. Then he can take on a roll like Pay Back and What Women Want and he makes them work. Ransom the Lethal Weapon movies and the Patriot are all great films made even better by Mel

Mel has apparently decided to stay behind the camara and says he will no longer appear in movies. It's a shame, as he is one of my favorite actors. He has shown a nice range, appearing in everything from action to drama to romantic comedy, and doing it all well. Man Without a Face was very good, and his directorial debut if I remember correctly. I disagree that he was miscast in Braveheart, and thought he did an excellent job. What Women Want, and to a lesser degree Bird on a Wire, showed he was equally good at romantic comedy. Signs and We Were Soldiers are two more of my favorite movies. Of course, there have been stinkers too. Forever Young was an interesting idea, but not very well done. This wouldn't be Mel's fault, but he didn't do much to save it either. As happens sometimes, they took the Lethal Weapon series for a ride one too many times... maybe even two too many. If I had one criticism for Mel's acting, it would be some of his emotional scenes. The Patriot was brought up, and I do think that is a good example. While I liked the movie and Gibson's performance overall, the scene after his oldest son dies is a prime example of his tendency to... I don't even know. I can't tell if he's over doing it, if he's under doing it. There is something that just doesn't sit right sometimes. It's not in every movie, and it's not every emotional scene, but sometimes he just comes off the wrong way. Overall, I think he is actually underrated. He certainly deserves at least a four.

hamlet was his best role! he was miscast in braveheart b/c of the age factor.. he should've stayed behind the camera. i think he's a gifted director. the passion was brilliant, but it really really really inflated his bankbook and i'm sure his ego. my husband thinks he is cool & i think he's chosen better roles as he matured. i didn't like him one bit back in the 80s era and didn't think he was cute, but i sure do now!

Anyone who has the guts to firmly say what they believe, regardless of what the politically correct may think about it, has my utmost respect and my constant cheers. God bless you Mel! Don't hate me, but I think that Mel Gibson is a terrible actor. Not convincing at all. I remember watching the Patriot and he was trying to be all sad and cried.....I felt nothing. And that is how I feel about him in pretty much every movie. He does not convince me at all. And now I am already avoiding movies with him, cause I know I wouldn't like it.

I first saw Mel Gibson in the Australian film Gallipolli and thought he was someone to watch. Now *there* was handsome and charming. I haven't liked any of his other movies except Hamlet. It's possible, but rare, for an actor to stand out in a mediocre movie. As far as him being a role model, he practically crossed the line into obscenity in remarks he made about homosexuals on Spanish tv. His version of Roman Catholicism is practically a cult - they believe the Popes after Vatican II are imposters(no, it's just his father). He seems to have a lot of issues. He's a competent actor.

A truly talented actor, he is top notch in everything he does whether its acting or directing. He was excellent as William Wallace in Braveheart, he also did a great job in directing it too. He was also excellent in The Patriot, though I thought the movie was too biased Mel Gibson does some of his best acting of his career. Just watch the scene where his son dies.

i think Mel Gibson is an incredible actor, i've seen over 20 of his movies and i love them all, not all of them are the smash hits like braveheart yet i love watching them purely because he's great to see on the srceen, i also think he was so brave to make the passion as by doing this he opened up his heart to the public, and that must be soo hard for actors.

Not one actor on here can hold a candle to Mel Gibson. He is my favorite and is one of the most gifted and versatile performers out there..I do not think Pacino or Deniro for how gifted they are can do Shakespeare. He is also an amazing director. He is a Good Actor .. Barve heart shows .. but there are simleraties between it and ( Passion ) passion is an amazing movie but the acting should be stronger .. coz its representing one GOD'S messengers ... Not a guy who is librating his country .. but both movies were good .. What woman likes was a good one too but should work out his comedy skills .. coz mel is good but he should aim to be perfect and i know he will

People, let me remind you...this poll is about his ACTING, not his religious convictions! One of his first movies, Tim was a performance for the ages, as was Braveheart. What amazes me is that I guarantee a high percentage of you giving him a 1 would've given him a 4 or 5 before Passion came out. Rate his ACTING ABILITY, not his social views. And don't hold him accountable for his father. They are two different people. Do you agree 100% with all of your parents views? I know I don't. He is a very good ACTOR. Not in the league of Hoffman, Pacino, DeNiro, etc. , but worthy of a 4.

Terrible mullet in 'Lethal Weapon' series. His versions of the war of independence and William Wallace are total distortions and strangely anti-British. Also, miscast in 'Chicken Run'. And talking of foul, he's also been in some real turkeys e.g. 'Tequila Sunrise', 'The man without a face','Forever young', 'The Patriot' , 'Payback', 'Conspiracy theory', 'Ransom' etc etc

Damm good actor, no doubt about it. He is no Robert Denero, or Al Pacino, but hell not many People are. I like alot of Mel Gibson Movies, he is one of my favorites, but I will have to say he isn't the best actor that came out of hollywood or anything, he is one of the best though. My fav movies with Mel would be all 3 of the Mad Max flicks, damn good action movies. He was also good in the Lethal Weapons, he even played Hamlet great, the guy is very talented he can play many roles. His movie Braveheart was truly badass too.

This man is alot like Julia Roberts, very overrated! Bleah. He isn't that good looking, and his acting could do a workover in acting school. Most of his movies only succeed because of good supporting actors or actresses. I really don't recommend his work to anyone. He is also known for his rampant homophobia. He seems to think he is a spokesperson for family values I guess. I didn't know showing your bare ass on the big screen was family values? Hmmm...seems hypocritical ! Total Aussie trash ! Gross out...

Once again, we are examining Mel Gibson's acting skills, NOT his political leanings. It's amazing that those on the left complain that Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon are constantly badmouthed because of their political views, and then in the next breath they can attack Gibson, completely ignoring his obvious acting skills. With over forty films to his credit, Mel Gibson can be considered one of the greatest actors of our time. A look at his resume will show that the man can play any role in any type of film, whether it be action, drama or comedy. Gibson was the perfect selection for the dangerous, short-fused, somewhat eccentric cop, Martin Riggs, in the Lethal Weapon films. The role seemed to come so naturally to Gibson- I honestly can't imagine any other actor playing that role. Gibson also have a very moving performance in both The Man Without A Face and Forever Young. His performance was quite believable in both films, and it was quite moving watching him bond with young Nick Stahl in The Man Without A Face and Elijah Wood in Forever Young. Gibson must be commended for The Man Without A Face, as he directed the film and managed to pull of a fantastic performance. Equally riveting was his performance as William Wallace in Braveheart. The film itself may have lacked historical accuracy, but it was wonderfully written, acted and directed. Gibson was also good in a similar role in another historical drama The Patriot. Gibson is quite charming in romantic comedies as well (What Women Want). The role in that film seemed to come so naturally to him. So, in the final analysis, Mel Gibson has had a colorful career in Hollywood, and the best is yet to come. He takes his work very seriously (both acting and directing), and as a result, Gibson is considered, and rightfully so, to be one of the greatest actors of our time.
