Got bored of her books after a few. I lost interest in the later adventures of Lestat and Louie (after Queen of the Damned). I must admit she made being a vampire sound fun, though...

She's certainly got writing chops, but kind of ruined vampires in my view, transforming them from the ancient notion of an evil bloodsucking corpse, like in the classic film "Nosferatu" or the more familiar, mysterious, Eastern European noble of Lugosi, or the vampires played by the great Christopher Lee to Rice's notion of new age, trendy nightclub hopping vampires that sip lattes and join alternative rock bands. When it comes to horror books and movies, for me, I'll take the old school stuff ( Poe, Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, the Stoker novel, etc.) over this terminally hip crap any day.

I read "Interview With a Vampire" in the late 70's and found it enjoyable, even refreshing. I read her 2nd book in the series..."Vampire Lestat" I believe was the title...and was less impressed. I tried reading the 3rd book and had to give it up after a few chapters, as I found in incredibly dense and, more importantly, incredibly boring. She's sort of invented a whole new mythology around the vampire, but, being a purist, I'll take the old-fashioned Dracula figure of yore over her more recent inventions any day of the week.

to compare anne rice to stepnen king is like comparing a pebble to a mountain, pointless. she is creative than the crap infects the world with and i hope one day someone will inflict the same amount of punishment he has inflicted on the unknowing public on hin . screw all king fans in the ass!!

This woman has a real gift for writing. She really captures the feeling and essence of whatever time and setting she writes about-you feel like you are THERE.Although she is most famous for her Vampire books- some of her other books are even better.Memnoch the Devil was a true masterpiece. Her worst writings are published under another name, and deal with bondage, masochism and adult themes. They didn't appeal to me at all.
goatman_84 09/26/2004
This woman has got the greatest writing skills in horror. Her stories suck you in and are very satisfying. Lestat, my favorite book character of all time, is a character so full of real emotion, to me at least, that I actually feel he's like a real person. She actually based him on her husband, Stan. I was sad to hear she's no longer writing the Vampire Chronicles or the Mayfair Witches, maybe she'll read this and change her mind.
GypsyPrincess 09/13/2004
I think she is a great writer! Her books totally suck you in, the characters are great. Allthough I do think the vampire chronicles are getting old. But I love the Mayfair witches, I wish she would write more of them, maybe go into detail about some of the older witches or something. Anne, if you see this have I got some ideas for you!!!!!

Anne Rice is one of the worst things that happened to literature. Why? Not because she only writes pointless and asinine books, but because a league of brainless and brandwashed (by the popular media) people actually follow her. Her plot is boring and characters are wan. Nobody with IQ over 70 cares for her distorted look on the world.

I was onto her huge talent in her first Lasher novels. I read alot about this lady. Sadley, she lost a little girl...out of this tradgedy came the young vampire girl in her novels. When I was growing up Vampire movies were very in. Dracula, Bride Of Dracula, Dracula's Son...etc. In the day sex was only inuendo (sexy women vampires in slezy nightgowns floating above your bed and the like.) I was in Lu-see-anna for a while and have been in many of the places she describes. Making these creatures (vampires) real via sex preferences and character weaknesses was nothing less than genius. She makes it so real - I was sure Lasher was in my Victorian home when I stayed up late reading these books. Everything she writes puts you there - I feel the antibellum homesites she desribes and can see the characters...no loss of talent in her direction.

Simply put: Anne Rice does not write horror. Those who are deeply immersed in the genre will not find her works agreeable to their tastes. She is an author of Historical dark fiction. The fact that she populates the novels with vampires and witches is incidental. Take the book, Pandora, for instence. That is not a book about a vampire. In truth, it is her exploration of ancient Greek culture. If you take her books by this light, you'll be able to enjoy them more.

i love the vampire chronicles of anne rice. she is able to make you think that vampires exist!
pennyroyalty 04/01/2004
i tried, i really did. i tried hard to like her. i tried the Vampire book, in order and just couldn't get into them, like she's trying too hard to shoe people how smart she is. and i agree that she's smart, i just don't like it when an author tries to go over the heads of the audience. I then tried her non vampire books, and although they were promising, they lacked enough action or plot to keep them interesting.

Anne Rice is an exceptional author with a brilliant mind... she looks at things from a completely different perspective than any other author, her writing inspires me and makes me think.

I've only recently begun to read Anne Rice novels, and I like what I've read so far. Her style is not for everyone, and you have to be able to "go with the flow" and avoid trying to criticize her more "unrealistic" passages in her books. Her unique phrasing and use of literate prose makes her a winner. For those unfamiliar with the vampire series, be aware that in these works the vampires are the main characters. There is a whole underground vampire movements within the novels and human beings are mostly used as background characters. The novels are not horror novels in the traditional sense. They tell tales over the centuries of Rice's vampire creations, following their gruesome lives and loves over millennia. The dark fantasy aspects of Rice's books work for me but may not work for everyone.
kolby1973 09/15/2003
I never really considered Anne Rice to be a 'horror' author, but at the same time I am not sure what to call them. They just don't seem to be horror filled. And I honestly can say that I don't even care for her books, most of the time they are too long and boring. I personally think her son is a far better author. He can do circles around his mother anyday !
kahfess 07/18/2003
I have enjoyed some of this authors works. Some just seem to hit me wrong, while others are really enjoyable.

Anne Rice is wonderful!I love the Vampire Chronicals.
Gups11 05/15/2003
I usually don't like horror novels, but Rice is an absolutely captivating writer. I could do with less of the homosexual current in the books. Although it is somewhat needed with the idea of her vampires so it doesn't bother me much. I've really enjoyed her books
mobilebuzz 11/29/2002
Her first books were better. Then the whole thing just got kind of old. That doesn't take away from her great talent as an author.
vampiric_rayne 11/29/2002
WHAT is there not to like of the genius which is Anne Rice this woman is magnificant she brings these vampires to life!..I have yet to see an author match her talent
lukskywlkr. 10/24/2002
Sometimes she over-writes. She tries to describe something in so much detail that sometimes you wish she would just get on with the story. That was the main problem with Interview with the Vampire. The Vampire Lestat started that way, but then she got down to telling the story and it was wonderful. It carried right through to Queen of the Damned, and that one remains my favorite fiction book to this day. Her imagination seems limitless. Then, she goes downhill. The Tale of the Body Thief was okay, but Memnoch the Devil was unsatisfying, and Servant of the Bones was just basically a rehash of Interview. I have read Pandora, Vittorio, and am reading the Vampire Armand. It will probably be my last vampire book, since they have become somewhat tiresome.
Lord Luzifer 04/29/2002
she is amaizing. THIS is how a real writer writes. her books are filled with graphic diteils, great narrator skills, charming characters and a great atmosphere.
firelord2001 10/18/2001
rice takes you deep inside the mind of her characters. she is the best horror author out thier.
Donelle 07/19/2001
Page after page I find myself totally absorbed in the lives of her characters. Her writing is so complete and beautiful that I suspect she knows more about the supernatural than we think. Her words can bring tears to my eyes or joy to my heart depending on what she is writing of. I think her character Lestat is one of the most vivid characters in the history of literature. Armand is my favorite vampire. Louis is the living word for beauty. Her novels are intellectually stimulating unlike some of the other stuff out there. I hope her novels become classics.
ElegantFire 07/12/2001
I'm not sure how much I can compare her books to other authors of the horror genre other than King, since horror is not really my taste, but I do love her books, of those that I have read so far. I once read somewhere that Anne Rice can write about a table and make it seem incredibly interesting. I find this so true. Her details are so perfect that it's easy to imagine yourself in her settings she describes. While this type of writing is wonderful to read, it does leave little to the imagination... I still recommend her work highly though, especially the Vampire Chronicles.
Castlespider 03/23/2001
My new favorite writer.I`m proud of any southerner that makes it big.If you`re not southern, you wouldn`t understand that. She expresses herself the way I will if I ever write a book. With great care and study, she writes. She rocks.
figment 02/22/2001
I own every book that Anne Rice has ever written. i find them to be the best books i have ever read. they keep you wanting to read more, i have trouble putting her books down after i start them. you have to read one of her books to understand what im talking about. you wont be sorry you did!
jai7321 01/27/2001
If Anne Rice didn't have vampires or witchcraft she wouldn't be a writer. Her books are glorified romance novels mixed with blood. If you have read one of her books you have read them all.
ed34 01/06/2001
I love all her books, and reread them when ever I get a chance. Her power to take her readers to far off places, and to different time periods is genius.
Shelbe 12/14/2000
Anne Rice is PURE GENIUS. I have read each and every one of her books at least twice, including the erotica collection. They transport me to a place where I explore imagination and I end up questioning everything in life, I even feel as if I know all of her characters, I feel them, their joys and pain. With the exception of Taltos and Violin (big disappointments) all of her books are masterpieces, my favorites being: Witching Hour, Lasher, Servant of the Bones, The Mummy, Memnoch the Devil, Pandora and Vittorio.
Sianna007 12/02/2000
Anne Rice is in my opinion the best author of the twentieth century. Her books are amazing, the characters are believable and so varied. There is such amazing detail in her novels, particularly when dealing with history. She is without a doubt my favourite author, I would recommend everyone check out her books.
Lilith 11/24/2000
I think Anne Rice is a great writer all her novels are full of excitement. They always grab you and don't let go.My favorite novel by her is The Witching Hour,it is one of her longest novels but great 'till the end.Anne Rice gives thorough background on the Mayfair Witches and the origin of Lasher.I strongly recommend this novel to anyone it is just GREAT. Also check out Lasher(the sequel)

Anne Rice is incredible. Spell binding and captivating. Her books are a must for fans of the mysterious and mythical.

Anne Rice used to be a good author, what happened ? Her recent novels are so cheesy and false, not what we are used to .
init9859om 08/25/2000
Anne is still a 5 star author, even though her recent novels are getting silly and dare I say, boring. Ms. Rice, have you bumped your head or something ? Violin was a joke, the new vampire tales are pretty lame, it seems a different author wrote these books entirely ! We long time fans enjoy your straight-forward writing syle, not this new, victorian, poetic prose that possesses you. It really is rather silly and unbelievable. Maybe I should contact Father Merrin because I want Anne Rice back !

i love to read vampire books, but no vampire books top anne rice's!!! she is, and will always be my favorite author. Kasper

Anne Rice is truly the worst writer to somehow come to prominence in the 20th century. To compare her incredibly dull works to Stephen King is doing a horrible injustice to King...while his novels feature rollicking action and totally identifiable characters, Rice bores you to death with static locations and lifeless characters you have absolutely no vested interest in. Do yourself a favour and avoid this "author" like the plague.

I believe that ANee Rice keeps her readers in suspence throughout her novels. She is a leader in the horror book phenomena.

I love Anne Rice he books are intense and make you think. The vampire chronicles are an incredible collection of writing which makes you think about society.
