They were all over the radio from the mid to late 70's and like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers of the era nobody seemed to dislike them, but none of my friends thought of them as their favourite band. I went to some all day rock festival at a football stadium in the early 80's, and they were headlining. I didn't go because they were on the bill, I just went for a day in the sun, drinking beer and listening to music. Ted Nuggent and Loverboy were also on the bill so I'm thinkinkg I must have gotten free or cheap tickets because I hated both those two acts. This would have been after Heart's first round of hits but before their really super boring MTV aimed power ballads. Anyway, I was bowled over by them. They were a really good band and I was surprised by the depth of their set list. I even got a kick out of Ted Nuggent, so maybe I was doing more than just drinking beer. I seem to recall that Blue Oyster Cult was there too, so what the hell was I doing at that concert? Was it for a woman? Maybe. Loverboy was on the bill afterall.Anyway, I gave them an extra star for that show, but they were really just a basic AM radio singles act that had a good run of hits. They went on to disgrace that legacy with some terrible stuff, but I think they still have the chops as a couple of hard rock performers. Tom Petty went on to much bigger and better things, becoming one of the great honoured veterns of the era.

Like Led Zeppelin after sex change operations in the 70's, then had a sales slump before making a comeback in the mid 80's with generic, hard rock- connect the dots, MTV type hits...Nothing to get excited about, umm.... musically speaking.
Katrinabena 07/06/2008
Great vocals, great guitar, and great catchy songs. What is not too like? Heart proved girls can rock!
jay111 06/16/2008
stole alot from certain groups that they loved in the 70's, and then became really lame and commercial in the 80's
CzechMate 10/23/2007
I would say the most heavy rock oriented of the women led Classic Rock groups...catchy tunes that will not get on your nerves - too much.
ILikePie 07/19/2007
I can't help but feel that I really, really shouldn't like Heart... but 'Crazy on You' is awesome, and it won me over.
Skier43 06/30/2007
Heart is the best band in the business! So many great songs (Barracuda, Magic Man, Mistral Wind, Lost Angel, Alone, etc..) and they really can play any style of music. Ann Wilson is the BEST rock singer and Nancy is an awesome guitarist. I'm glad to say they are still going strong!! Check them out live!

the only thing to separate this lot from the rest of the cack that was 70s/80s AOR was that they were fronted by two babes. listen to this stuff now and it has dated so badly.
leftfinger 04/26/2006
They get 3 stars for their 70's stuff, which was a great sound.(Dreamboat Annie a must have) They hit the 80's, though, and it turned to pop fluff which was too bad. Ann Wilson had some pipes and the two sisters harmonized so well together.
cablejockey 02/04/2006
I just couldnt get into this group when it was on the charts. I can see why they were popular, but not my kind of music I guess.
geog84 01/27/2006
One of the definitive 80's rock bands.
sfalconer 10/27/2005
Heart in the day was good but suck now. Why they are on this list is beyond me. They are and never were Hard Rock or heavy metal. I have seen them twice, the first show was great but the last one totally sucked and I have had a hard time listening to them since. The Wilson sister need to hang it up.

nance is one of the all time best acoustic guitar players around she is creative and Ann has a voice that few women in the rock field can stand with her ... she has gotten better with age too... very creative women duo and also amoung the bandmates they have become the band HEART totally now in 2000 era ...
kadone 06/28/2005
liked most everything they did
kingguiness 05/18/2005
They were decent in the 70's but most of their 80's stuff is forgettable. Though,I must confess to liking These Dreams. It's a guilty pleasure.

The rock incarnation of Heart was formed in Seattle with the intention of creating a female lead Led Zeppelin. While their noble attempt was admirable (but probably impossible), the band did succeed in creating their own niche as serious female hard rock musicians. Heart was able to combine driving harder tracks along with acoustic numbers that resulted in some of the better full-length releases of the late 1970's. Nowhere was this more evident than on their best (and debut) 1976 effort Dreamboat Annie. With songs like Magic Man and Crazy On You, the male dominated rock industry could no longer remark how cute it was to see women try to play harder rock and roll, as this was serious stuff coming from female songwriters and performers (though Anne and Nancy Wilson were the only two females in the group). On the softer side the Wilson sisters were able to pen excellent acoustic numbers (eg the title track) as balance, and some could be considered on par with similar songs by their male contemporaries. Heart was relatively successful in avoiding the 'sophomore slump' with Little Queen (1977) which included their most popular 'rocker' Barracuda as well as some other heavier tracks (eg Kick It Out), but also included the oft overlooked acoustic Love Alive. Due to a dispute with their original record label, two efforts were released in 1978: the largely forgettable Magazine (which does include the minor hit Heartless and covers of Without You and I've Got The Music In Me) and the primary effort Dog & Butterfly. The latter release was much stronger throughout with the first side (this was the day of vinyl LPs) being hard (ie dog) and the flip side being soft (ie butterfly). A hit song of note came from each side, Straight On and Dog And Butterfly. By the time Bebe Le Strange (1980) was released, the first life of the band had basically ended in a whimper as the lackluster Even It Up and the cover Tell It Like It Is (a non LP release) attest. The band didn't find new life until 1985 with their self-titled (and MTV friendly) release that started the band off in a power pop mold; however, there were a few diamonds in the rough on the two interim releases including City's Burning and How Can I Refuse. When all is said and done, when one only considers the harder version of Heart (as the latter version wouldn't even be on this list), the influence of the band is undeniable and quality of the work was superb.

nancy wilson is hott:) still is.
Schluggi 01/31/2004
A couple girls don't make a top band. There is and always was a lot missing. They never went any better than they were as a Led Zeppelin cover band (that's how the started).
kolby1973 09/23/2003
Just like Foreigner, Heart was very real and genuine. One of the few women rock bands that could literally rock a stadium full of people. They were so ahead of their time it wasn't even funny.
skibandit 09/22/2003
Heart is one of the best, hard-ass, kick ass bands from their era! I love listening to heart when driving on the road, epecially on ski trips. There is nothing better when you pull into a spot at Whistler, jump out of the truck, have all the doors open and having HEART just cranked on the pair of 12's!!! My personal favourite is Crazy on You, followed by Baracuda! I love the looks it gets you. ROCK ON and Take it Light!
jaspirtaint 09/22/2003
Barracuda ROCKS!

What is a women band doing on this list.
longleggs 08/11/2003
One of the greatest female led bands ever. I place them second to Doro Pesch in terms of talent.
AndrewScott 06/27/2003
Ann Wilson voice is simply amazing, and her sister Nancy skillfully complements her on this group's very fine catalog. Vocals are a distinctive combination of rock and soul that can really soar. Blows today's wannabe ho's out of the water. "Crazy on You", "Alone" and "Stranded" are faves.
Rick18 06/09/2003
Awesome group...great rockers from the seventies until now...Ann and Nancy Wilson rock!!!!

5 great songs
houmusician 01/03/2003
A great band! The hard truth is that with the problems that Ann had with wieght and self esteem they could not hold it together. They simply were playing in an era where you could not pass of an obese chick as a front person! I saw them in there heyday and there is no dougbt these girls are the real thing. Musicianship, writing and no doubt vocals. Im glad to hear that she has lost weight and is making a comeback. Ill be wathing out for Ann & Nancy.

My favorite rock band. Ann Wilson is on par with Aretha Franklin as a vocalist; yes, she is that good. She kicks butt over "Pariah Scary" or these other 90s girls. Her voice is better than Grace Slick's even. The songs are phenomenal at every phase of their career! "There's The Girl" has a great lead from Nancy too. A+++.
Jason1972 10/25/2002
Rock and Roll's true darlings: the Wilson sisters. Nancy's songwriting styles and oh, that voice on Ann! Truly a flawless voice and very sexy, too. Great music from 70s and 80s!
ClassicMusicLo ver 08/28/2002
Anne Wilson's voice is definitely not one you would ever forget. Very powerful singer, and the songs are filled with detailed imagery. Even the more recent albums were good.
mmccracken 08/11/2002
They really changed the world with masterpieces like Baracuda. It may never be safe to go to the airwaves again...
LoneUSFullHous eFan 08/01/2002
I didn't start to get into their music until they released 'All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You' (weird for me, considering the song is about adultery). Old Heart isn't too bad either. Anne Wilson is probably one of the few female singers who can scream her head off, YET IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE MUSIC!
e.tilbury 06/26/2002
babes that sing and play!
Joey1963 06/13/2002
I love this group!! Ann's vocals and Nancy's guitar playing are phenominal. Listening to their earlier hits like "Barracuda" and "Dog and Butterfly" and later smashes like "What About Love" and "Nothin At All"..you could hear the passion all the way around. I really enjoyed their lesser known works that were released in the early 80's before they had their huge come back. Their accoustic stuff is powerful...and although I prefer them as Heart, their foray as the "Love Mongers" was good as well. At some point down the road, I hope Ann and Nancy are recognized for their ground breaking work in rock music by being inducted into the "Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame"!

A legendary group, great songs, great act!

I love Heart. Ann Wilson has once of the most powerful voices in music.. so strong, so much passion. This woman can SING. Nancy Wilson is a great guitar player and a strong vocalist. Great live act as well. It has amazed me how Ann and Nancy have endured the music business - they stuck to their dream. A true example of "Girl Power" !
afterglow70 06/16/2001
One of the greatest bands ever to grace the planet. They have a talent that is totally unmatched by any other girl/boy band. Baracuda!!!!
glorybox3 05/13/2001
I could love this band for any number of reasons. The fact that everyone in said band is a wonderful musician, for instance. Or that their songs were and are purely great and groundbreaking. But I can't honestly say I can pinpoint what it is exactly that drew me so strongly to Heart. I love both Ann and Nancy Wilson's voices and the passion with which they sing is inspiring. I don't know, I guess they have that rare power of making me empathize with a lot of what they sing and the songs they write. I can't say enough good things. Heart just makes me happy and we all need bands like that.
Ardis 03/02/2001
this is one of the greatest female bands ever! they can sing and play a mean ass guitar!
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
Next to maybe Lee Aaron, Heart is my favorite girl hard rock band!
Mile-High David 02/11/2001
These girls ROCK!!! Too bad they've been quiet for so long. DESIRE WALKS ON (1993) was a stellar album! I especially liked "Back to Avalon," "My Crazy Head," & "Voodoo Doll." Last year's tour (2000) with just the Wilson sisters was fantastic! The candles and incense on stage were mesmerizing and intoxicating, and Ann & Nancy are simply gorgeous. Keep it up, ladies!
JonWeHo 01/27/2001
One of the greatest bands of all time. Highly underrated. "Dreamboat Annie" is about the best album ever.
fisheyedfool 09/26/2000
Saw them when they were the opening act for Loggins and Messina. One of the few last good acts to get in, before the curtain fell, with the death of rock-n-roll.
