I wasn't really into him when i was younger, but let's just say, i think as you mature so does your taste in music. Now, i can't get enough of him. David Bowie, in my opinion, is unique in all sorts of ways, (his voice, his talent, his music style and don't forget his fashion sense). My favorite songs of his are: Ashes to ashes, Let's dance, Space oddity, Ziggy Stardust and The man who sold the world. Excellent. He is an icon.

Instantly compels consideration for one of the more dynamic artists of our time. His performances are breathtaking, and the lyrical and instrumental compositions of his music are varied. Few combine glamor and talent as effectively as David Bowie. "Space Oddity," "Let's Dance" and "Life on Mars" are personal favorites.

One of the most prolific and avaricious artists of his generation. Innovative, intelligent, talented, and business-savvy. The world would be a much better place if he was not involved in the business of music and art.

The mercurial chameleon-like David Bowie. Surely A capable talented- if not at times bizarre entertainer. I loved Hunky Dory- subtle, understated (in a stunning way) Ziggy Stardust was just magnificent- Alladin Sane was over the top- while Diamond Dogs was strange and had its moments. Bowie in the mid 70s had some good music- I loved 'Station to Station'- but after this he drifted off into other odd musical themes- I lost him till 'Lets Dance'.....

Whether you like his music or not there's no denying he's always been ahead of the game and has probably influenced more genres, let alone bands, than anyone before or since. He has made a fair few duff albums -those that came before Hunky Dory, Pinups, Lodger, Tonight and the hopeless Tin Machine project. But most of his Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, Berlin period albums are top flight rock classics.

The massively influential, always evolving, songwriter extrodinaire is still doing what he loves. Even those that do not care for David usually can find a few songs that they enjoy. Sure, he has put out some subpar stuff, but overall, he has been an icon.

Bowie is an icon. He keeps making new music challenging himself and his audience. You may not like his new music but his drive to do new things rather than exist as a baby boomer nostalgia act is quite noble in this day and age.

Generally great up until 'Let's Dance'. Then lost it big time. Still reckon his best period to be 'Station to Station' to 'Heroes'. I find it hard to imagine anyone not even liking one song he's done as he's pretty much experimented with every genre.

Massively influential, and more importantly, the creator one of my top three favorite dive bar, jukebox, shoot pool, drink beer song of all time - Heroes. The other two? The Clash's Magnificent Seven, and Social Distortion's Story of My Life. And I'll put the Pogues' Sunnyside of the Street as an honorable mention.

David Bowie is an ever evolving rock icon. He is able to make so many different styles his own and throughout his long career has managed to invigorate any number of fans. After recently seeing a cocnert it is clear to me that this man is still at the top of his game. An ever-evolving man himself Bowie has provided fans with a wide variety of songs to satisfy any musical taste.

I just don't know how to respond to the 1 star ratings. Anyone who gives David Bowie 1 star has to be both culturally and musically retarded. Whether or not he is your style or not, you can't deny the man's musicial skill, his influence, or the fact that his career spans FIVE decades. A living legend should get at least 3 stars even if you don't like his music much personally.

How does one begin to rate a musical chameleon like David Bowie? With his merger of music and fashion, Bowie was the poster child of glam rock (though I have to agree with some of the other comments that Bowie gets too much credit for creating glam and other genres). Having been around for so long (his first solo release was in 1969), his career looks like a rollercoaster, even more than other artists with similar lengthy careers. This is primarily due to his continuously changing music styles, some of which he performed better than others. (Which also would explain why so many people like only those Bowie releases within a certain time frame.) Back on the rollercoaster, Bowie had three clear peaks: Ziggy Stardust (1972), Heroes (1977), and Scary Monsters (1980). Given that Bowie has been so prolific, one or more compilations is clearly the place to start as those three peak releases noted before will not suffice. Fortunately, there are plenty of choices; however, my suggestion ... Read more

David Bowie is The Man. He's never been afraid to take chances, maybe even look a little silly sometimes. One night back in the 80s I was watching videos with my mom, and when David Bowie came on she was most impressed. "What a good-looking man!" she exclaimed.

I think that when you've been around as long as David Bowie, and when you've accomplished as much and been as widely admired and respected as he has, you deserve five stars on principle. He has released some classic albums and some pretty terrible albums, but the good far outweighs the bad in his case. He is mostly (almost single-handedly) responsible for several musical genres including glam, punk, and new wave, and how many artists can be said to have revolutionized such a large percentage of popular music? A handful? One or two? He could retire tomorrow and still have his name etched among the greatest rock stars of all time.

Absolutely brilliant man; not afraid to express himself the way he wants to and that in itself is highly admirable. He's talented in so many ways; I'd be apt to suppose that the ones who don't like him (or at least are able to praise him in some way) are just jealous and pathetic. Would he be a superstar if he absolutely sucked at what he does? I think not.

To all the detractors, Bowie was the last word and not the first word in glam rock. I don't like everything he wrote or sang, but believe he's still one of the best performers, even to this day.

Bowie is the ultimate pop star. Why? Because he is unbashedly, unashamedly, unapologetically FAKE. He was first an Anthony Newley wannabe, but abandoned that for starry-eyed folk when the dividends just didn't seem to be paying up. He was next, in no particular order, a glam rocker à la Marc Bolan, a would-be Philly International crooner albeit with a "plastic" soul, a Brian Eno parasite, disco miner, generic 80's popster, frontman for a tonedeaf heavy metal outfit, hip hop pimp, electronica dilettante and now... who knows? His would have been a sad career, to say the least, had he not been (at least in his 70's heyday) so darn brilliant - lyrically, conceptually, in public relations, marketing. Like I said, the ultimate pop star.

I am APPALLED at how anyone can rate David Bowie Terrible, bad, or OK. He's a stinkin' genius! He's been with us - what? - thirty years! I must admit, you made some mistakes in the 90s, David. The music wasn't very good...at all. But he's gained my respect back with his "Heathen" album. And I think he should cut his hair short again - I don't like it long - but that's his decision. So I come to my conclusion, and as a young fan (very young) I must say that David Bowie is better than great...he's outstanding! (Bravo, good show, old chap, and all that nosh.)

I can look past his flamboyant clothes and his androgynous state in the beginning of his career and see that he had some really great tunes. It's sad to see that as rock and roll gets older and as each music revolution comes and goes, he's kind of getting ignored which is wrong. He still rocks today and if you ask me, he's the true Diamond Dave.

I absolutely love David Bowie. He is the GREATEST rock star ever! And yes, he is God. I myself, don't see how people don't like him. He has great music that touches thousands of people's hearts every day, at least 20 albums (that has to be good - they wouldn't keep making them), and also intelligent. He has never been afraid to be who he really is, whether it be a bisexual androgenous glam rocker or a proud father and husband. After at least 30 years he is still going strong and that has to deserve some credit. Did i mention he is the hottest dude alive? Even at 55. He has always been original and always keeps reinventing himself. I LOVE DAVID BOWIE!! Ziggy forever!

Absolutely the most derivative and overrated 'act' in popular rock music - with the possible exception of Madonna. To paraphrase Mark Twain 'the original parts aren't good, and the good parts aren't original...' Outside of the British music press, who proclaimed Bowie 'the next big thing' each Monday - David Jones was a very minor 70's musical force. Bowie's later successes - were always the result of following trends, not setting them. Prior to 1976 - he sold few records or concert tickets, outside of England. Many rock critics point to Bowie as the creator of glam / glitter rock. In fact, his 'pioneering' 1972 Ziggy Stardust work derived from pioneers like T-Rex and Alice Cooper Group, who came some years before. A former member of Bowie's Spiders From Mars band - details Cooper's heavy influence on Bowie, in a recent bio. Good that the record is getting set straight. In addition to following trends, Bowie's successes also involved collaboration with true innovators like Lou... Read more

Bowie is an elite musician. His songs are great. He is in the top 20 artists. Ziggy Stardust, Changes, Suffragette City, Rebel Rebel, Space Oddity, Young Americans, he's a great guy. I always loved how Bowie changed his persona so much during his career and his collaboration with Queen on "Under Pressure" was great. David Jones is one of my favorite solo artists.

Though I have enjoyed his work over the years, I wouldn't say I was his biggest fan. Still, there is something about Bowie that never fails to fascinate. He has a kind of strange timelessness about him as though he could have existed in any century doing any number of things - artist, poet, musician, actor, sorcerer, prophet. I see him as a kind of mesmerizing enigma.

The great chameleon of Rock and Roll! A gifted singer and songwriter from London, he has the uncanny ability to change musical styles as it suits. E.g : Aladdin Sane 1973 - Rock, Young Americans 1975 - Soul, Low 1977 - Electronic Rock, Lets Dance 1983 - Pop, Outside 1998 - Avante Garde Rock. Different styles same result sheer quality in abundance.

Bowie is one of the coolest solo artists in history. Not the most attractive guy in the world, but does that really matter? Do I really care? "Fame" was a great song. And Queen collaborated with him (for "Under Pressure"), and anyone who is worthy of working with Queen must be good. The rich, low baritone that Bowie uses in his work is one of those voices that you know was made in heaven. Before I give him a five, I have to listen to more than sixteen songs, though. And what kind of parent names their kid "Zowie"? Speaking of which: Do y'all think I give a rat's a$$ what his sexual orientation was? NO! I DON'T If you all judge David by his bisexuality rather than his music, you don't deserve to be rating him anyway! Take care, everyone!

David Bowie is awesome, whoever rated him badly is incredibly ignorant. I'm obsessed with David Bowie, but with good reason. Davids not only a successful musician but an actor, a painter, and basically anything else he wants to be. I hope to be as successful and as cool as Bowie when I become famous! David Bowie is such an amazing artist, he has done and seen it all. He does what he wants, and nobody can stop him! I love that kind of an attitude, and, unlike sme newer artists, he created his OWN appearence, didnt steal it from someone else. I could run out of space trying to type the millions of accomplishments he had done, but i wont

He is the best musician ever. He changes his style so much that it is hard for non-Bowie fans to tell one of his songs from a song the next year. He is one example of someone who you don't here about much anymore who can still survive. He may be getting older but he just had a kid a year ago so really it is more like he is still in his 30's. He went from 60's rock in the 70's to disco in the 80's but still comes in number 1. Not only does he sing but he writes, plays instruments, paints, and acts! That is a lot more than some of these singers can say about themselves now-a-days. HE IS THE GREATEST!

I agree with ZiggyChild. David Bowie is like a God. He can drive seven year olds to say: "He's cute." on the night he was on SNL. Not like I was that seven year old or anything. .....who can't love the guy??!!
