Not a standup comic IMO. A fine comedic actor that had many memorable film roles. I will watch any film John Candy was in, even the turkeys. His work was always fun to watch. I enjoyed him on the old SCTV series as well. Always a pleasure to watch. His films always seemed pretty family friendly too.

John Candy was very funny. My dad showed me some video of him on Second City TV.

It's ashame he died because he made movies so funny. Any one remember Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Cool Runnings, or Uncle Buck? All classics.
sfalconer 08/27/2005
Just watch Planes, Trains & Automobiles to see how funny this man was and still is. The world is a little more serious with out John. John never did standup he was with Second City but he never did the two guys walk into a bar stuff.

Stand up or in a good comedy. John Candy was great and ranks up there with the best of them. Died way too early.

John Candy is the KING of Comedy. - - R.I.P - -

Candy was tremendously talented, and funny, as one can tell from watching old episodes of Second City. They were absolutely hilarious, trenchant, and often scathing in their depictions of the idiocies of our modern culture. I always thought it was a far superior show to Saturday Night Live. His films, however, tended to fall flat, and were generally tiresome and unfunny, but that wasn't his fault. The same thing happened to Eugene Levy, another Second City alumni. A tremendously gifted performer, and all Hollywood could think to do with him was to put him in these tired, trite National-Lampoon style comedies they continue to churn out ad nauseum.

WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GREATEST, SORRY HE LEFT US SO SOON! HE HAD A WARMTH AND WAS SOLID!

His work on Second City was classic.

John Candy was one of my favorite comedians. He was really funny and talented, although his choice of movies was poor. Harry Crumb was a dumb movie, I thought. He was great in Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, Only the Lonely, Stripes, and Armed and Dangerous. A class act and a very nice guy. He will be missed.
kolby1973 11/13/2003
One of the most down to earth and sweetest comedians to ever live. Just by seeing him in interviews and on the big screen, you could just tell what a nice guy he probably was. I love his movies. He is missed....

John Candy WAS a genius of comedy. I don't mean to be offensive but there is little else more tragic and therefore unfunny than a dead comedian.
EZMENOT 07/11/2003
John Candy was the best. He started out on SCTV in Canada, where he created so may charactors like Dr.Tongue. Miss him greatly. Check out "Delirious" or "Who is Harry Crumb"? Give them a look, if you haven't already.

the only thing funny about him is that he is dead
Redoedo 03/04/2003
I'm not giving John Candy a "5" ranking simply because he is dead, but he truly had talent. Not all of his movies were success, but he seemed to add something special to each of them (i.e. Uncle Buck). His best film was unquestionably "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with Steve Martin. There were so many memoriable scenes in that film- hilarious stuff. RIP John Candy.

LOVED JOHN CANDY---

A man who I have always thought to be funny and likeable. I love his films. I only wish he were still alive.
Molfan 04/03/2002
John Candy had this likability to him in his films. He was good as Uncle Buck who came to stay with his brothers kids while they were away. I liked him in Planes Trains and Automobiles as the salesman who got stuck trying to get to Chicago with Steve Martin. He usually played the good natured guy who could have been your next door nieghbor. he was alos funny in National Lampoons Vacation, as the WAlly World park employee.
callmetootie 04/02/2002
Overrated peformer, other then his rare cameo stunts in box-office smashes.
Solenoid DH 04/01/2002
I never thought he was wildly funny. But he was unusually warm and likable. There seemed to be no meanness in him. Too nice a man to have died so young.

The first time I saw John Candy in a film he was the goofy cop who shows up at the end of "The Blues Brothers" ordering Orange Whips all round at the big benefit concert (Orange Whip, Orange Whip, Orange Whip?). The way he did that one line bit was funnier and more memorable to me than entire routines done by many other comedians. If his humor lacked anything it was the anger you hear in so many others in this profession. Instead of giving us his yet another shot of witty bitterness John Candy sort of drew you in like a good friend who was gifted at telling jokes he loved to share. One of his very best roles was in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles". Like most actors, the success of his films had their ups and downs. But, whether his films were always critical successes or not, I always enjoyed his presence in them and to this day most have top notch re-watchablity.

Although John Candy was a funny man who made very many good movies, I cannot bring myself to accept him as anything better than an average comedian. To anyone who is interested check out Canadian Bacon, which in my opinion is one of his best films.
SSIILL 05/19/2001
Truly funny and likeable. That is a rare combination in the present "comedy" world. It's terrible that the best we have are Tom Green,Jim "hurry my 15 minutes are almost up" Carrey, and numerous other comic idiots that can't survive without the help of human waste as a prop.

John Candy was hilarious in Uncle Buck, down right funny in Planes Tranes and Automobiles, absolutely phenomenal in The great outdoors. If you have not seen these movies yet, we here at Keloggs strongly recommend it. Not only was he a terrific actor, but a sensational addition to the comedic world as well. We mourn you,John Candy, and may your days in heaven be filled with joy and food. ~Aubrey and Dana~ ps. If you do not enjoy these movies, you are, as john says, a MALINOMA HEAD!!

I just have to say that Only the Lonely was one of my favorites with John Candy and someone here said that it was a B movie. That had superb acting from Candy as well as Anthony Quinn, James Belushi and Maureen O'Hara. This was written by the legendary writer John Hughes, who brought about many Candy films such as The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains and Automobiles as well as many other classics. I am not going to get into the technical standpoint because that will take forever, but in my experience as a screenwriter I will say that this was a beautifully written script and directed eloquently by Chris Columbus. It is far from a B movie. I also must disagree with this person saying that John Candy was not a very good actor. He was terrific! Just watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles and tell me he wasn't any good. He plays a wide range from hillarious to serious all in the same movie, phrasing his lines better than anyone could and striking them at excelent timing. All at the same time he remains 100 percent convincing. This guy can make you laugh and cry all in the same movie. To this day, no one has topped him.

John Candy was hilarious in all the movies I have seen him in. Me and my son would go to the video store and all he wanted to rent was The Great Outdoors. Although he was hefty, he carried his weight very well. There was no sloppiness about him. He emitted that sincere, honest, funny person on and off the screen. His successors couldn't hold a candle to him. God bless him and his family. He is missed sorely. Sincerly, Paloma

You know he really wasn't a very good actor but he had some great moments. Enough great moments in fact that I would say they almost, wipe away such sub B movies as "Only the lonely" and "Canadian Bacon" almost. Despite that there's no question that I wish he was still with us.

A great loss... Candy was phenomenal.
umst5252ca 03/15/2000
I'm proud that he was a Canadian.

Sure, at his best, John Candy was pretty great -- but at some point you have to hold someone accountable for an entire Blockbuster shelf full of mediocre movies...

I was so saddened when he passed. Everything he did was funny and left you with a *feel good* attitude. He was talented and gentle, and it really showed. A great loss.

A pleasure to watch and a sensative man. A true loss to Canadian Comedy.
Munson 01/08/2000
I don't remember him much as a comedian, but I thought he was a funny comedic actor. His shining moment was early in his career as the overweight Dewey Oxburger ("My friends call me Ox) in Stripes. Who wasn't inspired to become a lean, mean, fighting machine after watching the movie?
