04/18/2008 | He's got some great pieces, but again, like many others, he's too caged in his own style.

10/07/2005 | Debussy's music appeals to my intuitive senses perhaps more than any classical composer. Whether I'm listening to his piano images or his orchestral pieces and songs, I am taken to a place that is ecstatic (outside the stasis). I am moved by his unusual melodies, his silent spaces, and his fluid, almost amorphous, harmonies - his seductive "whole-tone drift." Whether I'm reading philosophy, trying my hand on a poem, soaking in the spa, cleaning up the garage, or seeking inspiration for my "electronica" compositions, Debussy's delicate sonic atmospheres always set the right tone. Always!

06/01/2005 | Another of the great innovators of keyboard music in the 20th century (along with Rach, Ravel, and Godowsky). Listen to his Images to see what I mean. He is credited with changing all of classical music with his new ideas to composition. Often confused with Ravel. It is easy to tell them apart because Ravel is more melody inclined while Debussy is more about texture and nuance. Ravel's music has a more classical structure to it as well. Also check out Debussy's wonderful string quartet. Also Debussy had no regard for the rules of classical music and blatantly shows his by his parallel fifths and octaves in the Sunken Cathedral composition.

07/10/2001 | Claude Debussy...Now this composer found the word 'uniqueness' a most easily discovered experience!
A good friend many long years ago performed Debussy's "Sunken Cathedral" on the keyboard for me. During his incredible keyboard note dancing, Victor McBryde displayed quite a fascinating story using this instrument to tell it. Depicting a once deeply submerged cathedral which ly far beneath the mighty seas....magically...mysteriously and musically... rising from out of the depths of an ocean's submersion...powerfully exerting itself to the surface of the mighty waves of a grand and splendid sea.
Now that's refreshing creativity on behalf of Claude Debussy...! And truely a remarkably enjoyable piece to give listen.
