All the Dem politicians today are Socialists or in bed with big business, or both. AJ would hang them all from the nearest tree.Jackson-Lincoln-Reagan. That is the political thread of our history to understand.Jefferson-Wilson-Carter. That is the one to abandon.

Our first democratic president. In his successful war against the Bank of the U.S., Jackson destroyed a great bastion of wealth and special privilege. Jackson took no crap from anyone.

I wish people would stop using the term "genocide" to describe Indian removal. That term is a twentieth century notation to describe the Jewish Holocaust, c.e 1940's. The Jacksonian policy was philosophically different than the Nazi party. Jackson, following the times like many earlier Presidents and Governments, removed the Native Nations' because of the interests of land and wealth, meaning they were in the way and had to be removed for expansion and development. In contrast, Hitler and his subordinates wanted to kill Jews because they hated Jews. Their is a difference. It does not mean that the Indian Nations' did not get screwed but, the correct wording needs to be used so we can properly understand the correct context. By the way, Jackson is the only President to abolish the national debt.

One of the more controversial figures of the American presidency, and one who tends to divide historians into two camps. He was undoubtedly an accomplished politician, and one of the toughest to have held the office. His domestic policies were ruthless to the point of draconian, and like many of the presidents leading up to the civil war was unable to grapple with the evident successionist issues of the day.

he was a good man but i do not think he is as great as they say he is
GenghisTheHun 02/15/2007
You either love him or hate him. The good balances the bad. He was a probably mentally unbalanced, mean-spirited, slave driving misanthrope. Just the person all the Democrats adore at their annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinners!
Victor83 02/14/2007
Personally, I am no great fan of Jackson. He was a decent President, and that is as far as I will go. But the reviews here illustrate total hypocrisy. The notion is old that only white people (more to the point, southern-American white people) can be racist. How many have the Asians enslaved throughout the ages? How about the Africans- who still practice slavery in many parts of that continent to this day? Muslim Arabs still enslave people and treat women as gaots today. But Jackson is a bad guy because he was white and from the south? get over this white bashing BS!

billyguns2 12/13/2006
Vastly overrated by racist, white supremacist historians, Jackson was a crude, stubborn, uncouth, bloodthirsty and dictatorial man who was hell-bent on eradicating the red man; the first common man to achieve the presidency, it was mostly downhill from then on with a few notable exceptions.

oscargamblesfr o 11/02/2006
Quintessentially American figure, the type of person who really couldn't have come from anyplace else, if that makes any sense... and the first President to come from a working class background. His picture on the $20 kinda reminds me of Jacob Marley. There's no question that he was accomplished, brave, and a tough old bastard, but he was quite cruel, and his policies toward Native Americans in particular, regardless of any "oh that's just the way it was" spiel were simply disgraceful.
dixie1202 05/02/2006
In my opinion, he is the most over-rated president in the views of historians. The only reason that he got 2 stars is his postponement of the secessionist crisis. He had no problem with slavery and the Indian Removal Act directly defied the U.S. Supreme Court not to mention the cruel deaths suffered by the Native Americans. His refusal to renew the National Bank led to the Economic Panic of 1837.
raterater 11/14/2005
Many of the things the people who rated this president highly said are very convincing, and I might also consider him a hero if it were not for his legacy of massacreing First Nations peoples and the Trail of Tears. The reason I do not give him one star is that he was enacting the will of the majority of United States citizens of the time. He is often said to be the first President to be elected from the common people, he held two terms, and if he hadn't done what he did, someone else would have. I personally don't feel I can completely blame the politicians currently in power for every bad thing the U.S. Government does today either, even if I did not vote for them.

Andrew Jackson should be taken off the 20
spartacus007 08/30/2005
His Native American policies make imminent domain look like a joke. Hitler even commented that the US's treatment of the American Indians was one of the genocides that inspired his policies against the Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals and liberals.
Chagoth 07/27/2005
Jackson is the worst president in U.S. history. Everytime I get a twenty dollar bill, I have the urge to break it into two tens. Contrary to popular opinion, Jackson was not a small government guy. In fact, government expanded under Jackson even more than it did under Lincoln. Jackson's dislike of the second Bank of the United States has been misrepresented. He did take down the second BUS but he did it so he could appoint partisan political hacks in banks Jackson controlled. And Jackson virtually committed genocide against the Indians--Trail of Tears anyone? His presidency was filled with corruption and Jackson ignored the Constitution whenever it suited him.
CanadaSucks 05/03/2005
Gifted military leader. Solid patriot. But must be looked at as a racist and zealot who committed one of the worst crimes America has ever inflicted on an innocent people - The trail of tears is a shame on Jackson's legacy. Such a shame because Jackson is a fascinating historical read. . .

Mass-murdering, slave-owning, dueling psychopath, but at least he didn't testify at the 'Winter Soldier' hearings in the 1970's (being dead and all). Plus strippers love when u give them 20's. 5-stars.
Democratic Patriot 09/15/2004
I'd give him a 4 for his treatment of the Cherokee, but he deserves an extra point for having won against John Quincy Adams in popular vote, but still losing the election. Hmm...it seems as though every time the son of a President runs for President, that sort of thing ends up happening.
guru2djpremier 08/26/2004
Crazy bastard was a genociding dictator. An American Saddam Hussein. He appointed friends and relatives into high postitions, did his best to kill all Native Americans, and trampled on every constitutional limitation in his path.

A terrible President, often lacking in human decency. He actually tried to do some positive things, but those were overshadowed by the horrors perpetrated by this man. Nobody is perfect, but most of us aren't responsible for genocidal policies, either.
John McCain 06/27/2004
Worst two term president ever.
sld31879 06/23/2004
A crook of the highest order. He was completely lacking in principles; used power mostly to profit friends and punich enemies. He put in place a near genocidal policy towards the American Indians.
LanceRoxas 06/20/2004
One of the greatest in Americans in our nation's history. Balanced the budget. Reduced government corruption. Killed the SUSB in a defiant battle with the congress whereby he established the executive branch for what it is today and not a rubber stamper for the congress but an actual check. He was the first president to actually coordinate the direction of government by introducing bills and promoting an agenda from his bully pulpit while using his celebrity to his advantage. He was a fiercely strong-willed American that never backed down from a fight and succesfully confronted the sucession of South Carolina during his second term. He is easily the most underrated president in American history.

Andrew Jackson did some of the worst things that happened in America, but what he has done for our history, we often forget. He not only unfairly ethnically cleansed the Native Americans from their native lands in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, making room for the plantation owners, and delaying the Civil War for several years. But he also dealt with the South Carolina Nullification Crisis as Lincoln would have. Although Jackson did regret not getting to hang Calhoun after his presidency. But what he did for the American Presidency was turned it around, from something that only did what Congress told it to, but into the focal point of the national government. He made the Presidency into what it is today. He tried to democrize the United States by proposing to get ride of the Electoral College, I also suspect he was mad at them for 1824, but that's not the point. But he also helped permenate the political parties... yeah we can thank the existance of the two party system to him and different views on our Constitution. He had a lot of firsts that we also can't ignore, like stopping the Aristocracy of Virginia and Massachusetts from completely controlling the United States for a long time. He also was the first self made man, which led the whole nation to believe that anyone, as it was written on the paper, could go into that house, no matter how high or low their birth. Sure he also made the Spoils System, and when he was in Florida, he started an international crisis by hangning two British Officers, but we still got Florida out of it... yeah he wasn't perfect... but who is? Are you?
stephiebobeffi e 03/16/2004
Andrew Jackson was by far a terrible president. It's not just because of the Indian Removal Act either. (that of which he completely and publically defied the supreme court chief justice john marshall by continuing.) Andrew Jackson allowed his private thoughts meddle with his ability to govern a nation. Not only that, the way he got into office was terrible. It wasn't even necessary to win the Battle of New Orleans, and i think quincy was much more suitable for the job. also he tried to shut down the national bank. he was a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE president.
Izzles 03/14/2004
Jackson's era is often called the era of the common man, and indeed he tried to help the little guy. Unfortunetly, a lot of what he did led to recessions and actually hurt people. Not to mention the Trail of Tears and Indian removal. Of great note is that Jackson actually stomped all over the Constitution on that one: When the Indians in Mississippi appealed the move, chief justice upheld their right to live on ancestral land. Jackson said, Now let him enforce it! And ignoring the high court's interpretation of the law of the land, forced the Indians to move. No doube Jackson did some good things in office, but I still think he was one of the worst presidents ever.

I am related to Andrew Jackson, but I still have to give him a three rating because I did not think he was a perfect president. Whoever is reading this probably doesn't actually believe that I am related to Andrew Jackson, but I really am. My grandpa does work on geneology and he knows who we are related to back to like the 1400 and he has done his research. I didn't believe it at first but i looked through the book of thousands of names and there sat Andrew Jackson.
Junker279 11/04/2003
Massacred a countless amount of Indians, all and all not a very good president. There's a monumental trail called the "Trail of Tears" in which many Indians died when Jackson forced them to WALK from Georgia to Oklahoma, where there was no potential for them to make a living due to poor soil conditions for farming.
Redoedo 06/07/2003
President Andrew Jackson is possibly one of the most difficult Presidents to rate. Some who see him as "The People's President" instantly give him a 5 rating, and those who see him as a ruthless murderer of Native Americans give him a 1 rating. I am set on giving him a 3 rating, because he was simply an OK President. Let's look at things from the positive side first, and there are a few of them. When ordinary citizens looked at him, they say themselves. He truly was "The People's President In That Sense". He was an honest, well-intentioned man. He believed that the common man needed to be protected from the big banking monopoly, The Second Bank of the United States. His attempt to destroy that bank, however, had many more negative effects the positive ones. Love him or hate him, you cannot deny his influence as President. He began the two party system that continues today, and possibly is the most liberal President to ever serve in the White House (save FDR). His greatest contribution to the United States was his bold commitment to enforce the law and put down secession threats. Two high tariffs were passed with Jackson's support in 1828 and 1832 which drastically increased the price of European goods imported to the South. South Carolina refuses to acknowledge the tariffs, declaring them null. In 1832, after the second tariff was passed, South Carolina called a convention in which they announced the buildup of their state militia and threatened to secede from the Union. Jackson was enraged, and threatened to use all military action necessary to avert Civil War and collect the tariff. In the end, a deal was made between Vice President Calhoun (who was from S. Carolina) and Henry Clay, which called for declining tariff rates over the next ten years. Whether Jackson had any specific influence on the resolvement of the situation is debateable, but one has to admire his boldness during this time. This situation and the controversial Peggy Eaton affair led to the resignation of Vice President Calhoun in 1832. The Jackson/Calhoun Team was possibly the worst Presidential/Vice Presidential team in history. Jackson's Presidency did have a dark side, however, and it is debateable as to whether he left the nation in better shape than he found it. His appointment of party loyalists to government posts began a system that still goes on today. His "spoils system" enraged his critics. He seemed to move from Cabinet to Cabinet, with several members resigning throughout his administration. His ruthless enforcement of the Indian Removal Act continued throughout his Presidency and killed hundreds and hundreds of Indians. His economic policies and war against the "monster bank", the Bank of the United States, began a period of economic downturn over the next decade. The Peggy Eaton Affair is often stamped on Jackson's Presidency, but many need to realize that he personally had nothing to do with it- he was simply defending the honor of his friend and that of his friend's wife. In the final analysis, Andrew Jackson is a mediocre President in my view. He had tremendous influence on the country, but not all of it was necessarily positive. He was indeed a well intentioned man who did what he thought was right, and his decisions and actions as President revolved moreso around his beliefs than on Constitutional grounds. "Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in." -- Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States
the_arbiter 06/01/2003
Can only be a 1 star due to his craven nepotism, the despicable ethnic cleansing/slaughter of Native Americans, his founding of the party "machine" system that subverted true "town hall" democracy as envisaged by the founding fathers, and his belief that secession was an act of treason (cf South Carolina). On the plus side, Jackson fought an epic battle to abolish Nicolas Biddle's corrupt inflationary money machine & source of political bribes known as the 2nd bank of the United States (which was actually the 3rd US central bank). Central banking creates inflation, which is effectively a stealth tax on financially unsophisticated people, and greatly exacerbates business cycles by distorting market interest rates. Read "The creature from Jekyll Island" by G. Edward Griffin for an excellent account of Jackson's principled sound money campaign.
GC2007 04/08/2003
Does anyone really realize what he went through to become president??? John Quincy Adams cheated him out of electoral college votes by getting John C. Calhoun to get everyone to sway their votes! I think Andrew Jackson desearves what he rightfully won!
zarbo 01/03/2003
Ethnic cleansing, American-style.
Davis21Wylie 11/16/2002
A solid president, Jackson's terms as Chief Executive ushered in a new era of politics for the common man. His Native American policy was loathesome, but it was the natural next step for manifest destiny. The Peggy Eaton affair and other scandals led to the resignation of multiple cabinet members like John C. Calhoun, but he was not fully responsible for those events. He did a good job in defusing a volatile situation with nullification for the time being. One negative in his time as President was his deliberate attempts to destroy the Bank of the US through Specie Circular. His moves in that area killed the economy. Overall, though, he did a more than serviceable job in the presidency.

Teh most ogernment sanction killings outside of wartime than any othe rpresident. Avid and public racist preached genocide. nasty guy all around.
Lord of the Waves 01/17/2002
War heroes don't make good presidents. i.e. Jackson and Grant. Andy was a complete slob and put into effect the idea of "to the victor go the spoils." Was rightfully represented as "King" Jackson not president as he was more of a dictator who derived his support from people he hired and they convinced other people, the whole you scratch my back I scratch yours.
